Did something last night I never did before while out in Dublin: asked a girl if she's okay going home with the man she was with.
As I was walking behind the couple, I noticed how utterly demeaning he was to her in what he was saying to her and a red flag went up in my mind.
I was on a date with a lovely fella in Panti Bar this evening. At City Hall, as we went our separate ways home, he went to give me an aul kiss.
And I hate myself for it, but I didn't accept it. Because in my head all I was thinking: Oh crap. Who is nearby that could bottle us?
The transphobia of today, is the homophobia of yesterday.
From Ireland in 1993:
"I believe it to be an abnormality"
"I'm concerned for young people under the age of 18"
"It will introduce to boys and girls a lifestyle that is an abomination"
#PrideMonth
Man: Excuse me?
Me [leaving flat for walk]: Yes?
Man: Can you take down that rainbow flag from the window?
Me [from whose flat the flag flies]: Eh. No. Why?
Man: We're no homophobic! We're just hear to wash the windows and we didn't want to ruin your rainbow flag.
Me: Ooooh!
He got very hot and bothered that I'd "dare question their relationship of two and a half years" and stormed off.
She then responded with a big smile on her face and reassured me that it was all okay and was genuinely thankful for asking and checking in with her.
"All the EU is doing is presenting the legal reality of the UK's own demands. The fact Brexiters consider this some kind of military attack says nothing about Brussels and everything about their own failings."
@IanDunt
hit the
#Brexit
nail on the head:
With JK Rowling now involving herself in the Fingal Library Twitter affair, I am still surprised by how many people I follow on here, who continue to follow her. Over 200 of ye. What gives?
While so many 🇮🇪Irish and 🇪🇺Europeans stayed up to watch events in 🇺🇸Georgia, who can tell me the names of the three candidates vying to succeed 🇩🇪Angela Merkel, next week?
We're 🤩obsessed with US politics, but so often 🤷'meh' with European politics, which impacts us far more.
👋Those of you in your 40s and above, what advice would you give your 34 year old self?
🔎(Disclaimer: I'm 34 and would like some sound advice from your good selves)
Thinking of these two fishing boats steaming for home at the moment in storm force winds of
#StormBarra
. In particular the boat by Dursey Island to the left, the Dawn Ross is a local Castletownbere boat. Plenty of boats taking shelter in Bantry Bay today!
I think that video Ciaran Mullooly posted today highlights how he'll be spending his time as an MEP: churning out disinformation and stating that everything the EU does as a breach of Irish sovereignty.
Interesting here. Dublin City Council is able to close off College Green to all traffic from Friday - Sunday for 40,000 people.
But 80,000 people for Dublin Pride, which contributed more to the Dublin economy than the June long weekend, is not allowed anywhere near it.
A giant US naval ship will dock in Dublin city centre tomorrow on a courtesy visit to the capital to coincide with a major American football match this weekend.
Just one tiny example of how as a queer person, I have to make sure that I'm safe to do what so many other straight peoole do without a moment's pause.
Shout out to
@gavreilly
who is now in his fourth day as Irish twitter's personal Election 2024 google.
Gavan, how many surplus pizzas were left over at the RDS?
Gavan, daddy or chips?
Gavan, how many counts until a Simpsons GIF is used?
Gavan, what's your song of the summer?
I'm kicking myself all the way home for being so worked up about kissing a lovely fella on the street after a date.
But then again, its coming to the end of a year of multi homophobic attacks taking place here in Ireland, not to mention the shooting in Colorado just days ago.
I'm annoyed with myself in allowing this to get to me tonight.
I can be jealous of straight people who never have to go through the mental gymnastics of considering what street their on, or assess who is walking past them, in order to show public affection.
Dear heterosexuals and companies that only think the gays matter for the month of June:
This is how you do solidarity with the LGBT community outside Pride Month.
Instead in Ireland, we get Gardaí worried that a placard will hurt Pence's feelings.
Here’s a great example of why I’m proud to be from Iceland 🇮🇸Mike Pence is visiting the country and everyone is outraged. Mayor of Reykjavik, all the biggest firms and companies, everyone, they’re all flying the gay flag. All Pence will see everywhere on his visit is gay gay gay.
Priced out of Dublin? Hyper-space jump to a distant star system!
Its central core sun is buzzing with energy, there's easy access to schools, and plenty of property options to refashion a new civilization.
Intimidating queer people
Intimidating refugees
Intimidating women
Intimidating librarians
Intimidating journalists
Intimidating politicians
And yet the far-right will continue to receive a softly softly approach.
BREAKING: A bomb threat has been made on the home of Taoiseach Simon Harris this evening while his wife and young children were in the property.
Gardai carried out a search of the house after threat made by an anonymous caller using a code word, since declared a sinister hoax.
Do you want to know what it sounds like to be standing in a lighthouses during a storm?

"No, the inn wasn't full, the inn was empty".
I have to commend Éamon for showing such clear leadership here from a local politician against the hate that was shown last week.
I would like to see more local politicians doing the same at a time when we need so much more of it.
"As a citizen of this island, somebody who lives in Connemara and lived there for 50 years, it's not the Connemara I know, which was always welcoming."
@eamonocuiv
speaking to
@rtenews
I've said this before, and I know its not the cool thing to say, but the single reason why 🇮🇪Ireland has been able to do so well in our Covid-19 vaccine rollout is down purely to the European Commission securing them on our behalf for the entire 🇪🇺EU27.
After buying
#TogetherForYes
merch in Temple Bar, the campaign asked me some Qs about why I'll be voting Yes: because it's none of my business why a woman might need a termination. I want to end the shame and stigma the Irish state has imposed on women.

Also it appears the bigots have blocked the road in Newtownmountkennedy as they're expecting asylum seekers to be 'housed' there this evening. There's a call out from all far-right accounts to get there and back the bigots up. It's a busy night for extremists it seems.
I'm on holiday🏖, I'm on Bere Island🏝, I'm having a glass of Beara Gin🥃, I'm watching RuPaul's All Stars 5🏳️🌈 and I'm eating my Easter egg🍫.
My Mam bought me one despite knowing that I wouldn't be home from Dublin to eat it at home for Easter.❤
This has been a long year.
🇪🇺Today it is worth reading John Hume's Nobel Prize speech, where he paid particular focus on the crowning achievement of the EU:
"It is now clear that European Union is the best example in the history of the world of conflict resolution"
#RIPJohnHume
I fear that it will take a Jo Cox tragedy before movement is made in Ireland on the threat conspiracy theorists and far-right groups pose.
But in the meantime, they appear to have free reign to harrass and intimidate, and poision our politics.
Good news everyone!
I've started a new role at

But I will miss the equally wonderful people at

Now, what's this Brexit thing about?

How cool is this playback feature from

It shows vessels taking shelter in Bantry Bay ahead of

Many thanks to

🐟If you're wondering why sea fisheries is the big hurdle in Brexit, but was never really sure why, my article in today's

breaks it all down for you.
📰Many thanks to
@deshocks
for the invitation to write! I thoroughly enjoyed writing this.
Today is a perfect example of how focused Ireland's attention is on 🇺🇸US politics over the 🇪🇺EU.
🇱🇺Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, is in Dublin today to open his country's Embassy.
🇺🇸But Trump's trial receives rolling coverage.
I think in the minds of some,
#MarRef
meant job done, nothing more to do for LGBT+ people.
The news this week should be a wake-up call for all in Ireland that our journey for equality with you did not end in May 2015.
Thank you
@deshocks
for giving me the space to write this.
There has been alot of lazy stereotyping of Italy around the rates of
#coronavirus
there.🇮🇹
Having tested over 42,000 people, Italy "may have a higher number of cases as a result of performing more rigorous tests than their European counterparts."🔎
After four wonderful years at
@emireland
, today is my last day.
I'll miss the incredibly hardworking team of superstars who've made my time here such a pleasure.
It's onto the next stage of things, but I leave buoyed by joyful memories.
So long, and thanks for all the fish❤️
🚫Ireland and the EU do not need super trawlers.
🌻If we want to reach goals about sustainability and protecting biodiversity, bin these monster machines.
🤝And this is one issue both fishermen and environmentalists agree on.
There are SEVEN dolphin-killing supertrawlers operating off the west coast of Ireland.
Frank Bonefaas, Willem van der Zwan, Joseph Roty 2, Zeeland, Afrika, Carolien and Prins Bernhard are all fishing in the so-called Irish Whale & Dolphin Sanctuary ~>
I'm going to be going to Dublin Pride this weekend to celebrate it with friends and the community that defines it.
I'm hoping for a big turnout, so that we can show those who think they're winning over people with their fear and intimidation, that we are *not* going anywhere!
We see time and again in the 2020s the exact same homophobic language of hurt and stigmatisation that was said of queer people in the 1970s, be applied to trans people today.
There are entire stretches of Cork Street in Dublin just sitting derelict, instead of being able to be homes for people. How long will they be left to crumble away?
In the times that we live in, I wish
@hollyshortall
and
@platinumjones
would do a remotely organised emergency (emerg) Popsessed.
What do the Kardashians think of

Did Jess Glynne invent it? Holly Shortall would lead you to believe she did.

🌉🚛Hello. So, the landbridge has appeared in the news a good deal this week due to Brexit, which was kicked off by
@SiCarswell

🧵I’d like to explore some of core issues around it with a thread 1/
🚢I was wondering when the maritime aspect would come into play.
🏗️For context, with over 700 ships, the 🇩🇰Maersk moves about 20% of all containers shipped by sea, around 4.3m annually.
Its the second largest global shipping company just behind 🇨🇭🇮🇹MSC.
COPENHAGEN, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Shipping group Maersk is considering suspending all container bookings in and out of Russia in preparation for sanctions and restrictions imposed against the country.
When there has been so much bleak news regarding Ireland and refugees time and again, this is such an uplifting story.
Two Ukranians found each other amidst war and far from home on Sherkin Island. And West Cork now has another son to its name.
West Cork's Sherkin Island has welcomed its first Ukrainian baby, over a year after 57 refugees arrived.
Tomorrow, Olivia will turn two weeks old. She's being hailed as the world's first “Sherkrainain” baby.

People rightly point out the removal of railway in the northwest, but don't forget that of Cork and Kerry too.
In West Cork, places like Bantry, Baltimore and Skibbereen were connected by rail too. It took 2hrs to travel from Bantry to Cork city.
This weekend you will no doubt hear and see that Ireland has 'lost' €200 billion in fish to the EU since the 1970s.
Here, I briefly explain why this figure is false and should be viewed as just a very expensive red herring.

The edge of Ireland under Ardnakinna Lighthouse at the Harbour's Mouth was a lovely spot to read today.
And the views from the Signal Tower of Castletownbere and Bantry Bay were, as always, just stunning.
Great to see so many politicians come out against the hate speech that was targeted against the amazing Rhasidat Adeleke.
Will those same politicians now champion the hate speech bill?
It's an utter joy to see
@rodericogorman
become elected in Dublin West after canvassing and campaigning and working tirelessly for years to get here.
And the cherry on top was seeing him celebrate with his equally lovely partner

on the tellybox! 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

Ye can keep your Christmas jewellery ads, your Bono on Grafton Street, this is the wholesome Christmas heart wrenching content that I am here for.🎄
Coming from a fishing community, this runs far deeper than I can ever explain.⚓️
JUST LAUNCHED! Our very special Christmas film! And it’s dedicated to all our volunteers that our supporters help power to the rescue. They will answer the call all year round… but what happens when the pager beeps on the big day?
🫂Dublin, you've given me shelter and laughter during the many tough months since early January.
🌊But I go home today to West Cork to hangout with my nephews, smell the Atlantic again and walk the hills of Bere Island.
👋See you all on the other side of it.
On my way to Lidl on Cork Street, some scumbag kid fired a pipe into the wheel of a passing
@Deliveroo_IE
fella on a bike by the Fatima Luas stop.
He went over the handle bars. They stole his phone. The pipe ripped all the spokes from the front wheel rendering the bike useless.
I'll always cherish going down to home to canvass for
#MarRef
, but I never did check the results, for fear Castletownbere had voted no.
But thanks to
@spiller2
, I've found out just today that my hometown did Vote Yes by 55.1%.
Its so comforting to know this!🏳️🌈

@Aidan_Regan
Well, the key reason is: Ireland is an island nation, with the mentality of a landlocked nation.
We've never appreciated the sea around this island. Just look at the role farmers v. fishers have played in Ireland's history, social fabric and economy.
I walked with him for a short while, before we went our ways, with an elbow goodbye (
#coronavirus
) but my heart went out to him.
I took his number in case the Gardaí ring back on my phone.
Jesus. What utter scumbags to do that to a fella by a kid no older than ten!
Feck sake.
👋So long Dublin.
🔴⚪I'll be winding my way down home to West Cork today for the first time since Sunday 2nd February.
😷I had made one New Year's Resolution: to head home more in 2020, but along came Covid.
😀But its just a few hours more until I see the Atlantic again.
It was a fantastic turnout for the counter-protest in Dublin city centre today. There was just so much joy, support, and solidarity from a group of allies for trans people this afternoon.
Always and forever, trans rights are human rights❤️🏳️⚧️❤️
👏I'm very grateful to
@newstephen
and his colleagues for making my first 📺TV interview a pleasant experience.
🙂All the more as I was a little nervous as someone with a stutter.
🎙️I was on to talk about all things 🚧Brexit, 🚢ports and 🚛landbridge.
To hear this in the same week as that violent assault on another gay man on Dame Street has really shaken me.
We can clap ourselves on the back about what a great little place this is, but for LGBT+ people in Ireland, fear still hangs over us when we step outside the front door.
Gardai are pleading with people to take precautions with online dating following the brutal murder of Fine Gael activist Aidan Moffitt. There's suspicion he might have met his killer online. Gardai also examining if there was a homophobic motivation for the attack.
I still do not understand how some 200 people that I follow on here continue to follow that transphobic author.
She may have written books that you adore. But how can you follow someone who holds such hate for trans people?

Muted this tweet last night as the TERFs had found it. And just in time, as the biggest TERF of them all found it.
I'll say it again, and I'll say it often:

The Dáil has heard suggestions that Dublin Airport be named after James Joyce.
The idea came from
@OCallaghanJim
who said it would be a sign of Ireland’s appreciation for the author, 100 years on from the first publication of Ulysses.
@VirginMediaNews
Had he done his job, he might have known that the catching of trope sharks is prohibited by the EU.
But then he never bothered to attend
@EP_Fisheries
when he was a member.
A big thank you to the kind person who dropped my wallet into Kilmainham Garda Station. My weekend, which involves a wedding at home, is saved thanks to that person!
You'll all glad to hear that the Dawn Ross (the circled white boat), as well as the other Spanish fishing vessel, have made it to Bantry Bay.
Looks like the Dawn Ross went around the southern side of Bere Island, and will approach Castletownbere from the east.

Today in the 🇪🇺EU:

10th anniversary since Ireland last held the rotating 🇪🇺Presidency of the Council of the EU.
