We are an independent, rank-and-file led union fighting for living wages, democratic control of the workplace, and protection from harassment!
Established 2024
NEW: Blue Bottle workers told us they make $3,500 worth of lattes in a day, but take home just $144.
They can barely afford to make ends meet while NestleโBlue Bottleโs ownerโrakes in hundreds of billions a year.
Baristas across Boston are unionizing to demand their fair share.
Solidarity with Starbucks workers!! Their campaign has been a major inspiration for us and shows just how powerful rank-and-file led organizing can beโ๐ด
NEW: Starbucks workers have done what many thought was impossible โ force one of the largest corporations in the world to negotiate a union contract.
It's a major turning point for
@SBWorkersUnited
and the labor movement.
Here's the inside story on how they did it.
We are Blue Bottles Independent Union and weโve spent the last year and a half learning, teaching, growing, and unionizing together. We have a long way to go, but itโs been such a good start. Follow the linktree in our bio to learn more and support us!
Weโre inspired by the rank-and-file organizing taking specialty coffee by storm!! Congrats to Blank Street workers for winning a strong contractโ๏ธ๐
Having won our election by a landslide, management has responded by posting flyers in cafes committing to bargaining with us in good faith as we move forward.
While we commend leadership for making this commitment, we wish that they would do so publicly.
One of our members wrote for
@organizeworkers
about the process of organizing in such a high turnover industry, and the importance of building caring relationships amongst your coworkers!
Check it out here:
This past Thursday we held an informational picket outside of Blue Bottle in NYC as they held a voluntary Latte Art and Cup Tasters competition for baristas across the east coast! Friends from both
@PCUworkers
and the Think Coffee Union joined in support as well!
Today in: โFlyers that Legal Wouldnโt Have Written Off onโ
The morning of our election, Blue Bottle posted these flyers in cafes as a last ditch attempt to convince workers to vote No on unionizing!!!
Meet the Saffron Vanilla NOLA and Latte. Weโve been experimenting with a classic ingredient: vanilla. Our newest flavors come together for a sophisticated take on a vanilla latte and transform it into our beloved NOLA. Stop into a cafe to taste this seasonโs creations.
Workers at 5 blue bottle stores across Boston walked off the job today after management did not respond to voluntary recognize
@BBIUnion
Theyโre not giving up though and filing for elections today!
Some of our members spoke to Jacobin about our organizing!! Read about why we went independent, the state of coffee organizing in Boston, and how weโre bringing nestle to the bargaining table! ๐๐ดโ๏ธ
Six Blue Bottle Coffee locations in Boston have just voted to unionize. We spoke with three baristas about their union organizing, what their demands are, and how theyโre hoping to expand to other locations.
Happy International Workerโs Day!!!
Today we commemorate the work of labor organizers before us, and how weโre stronger as a movement when we act in solidarity and take collective action together ๐ด๐ด๐ด
This past International Workerโs Day, unionists from
@SINALTRAINAL
, a trade union that has organized food workers in Colombia, expressed their support for our union and urged Blue Bottle to engage with us in good faith!
Congrats to Compass Coffee workers for unionizing!!! If the people who worked in cafes had control over their workplaces, equipment wouldnโt be in constant states of disrepair!
Labor Notes was a blast! Incredible to see a surge in rank-and-file lead unionism and to meet so many cool people like our comrades in the
@PCUworkers
!!!
Successful first day at
#LaborNotes2024
!! Canโt wait to see everyone tomorrow at the 10am Panel: Joining a Union โ or Forming Your Own!
Come say hi to us and
@JonathanMelrod
there๐
Today in typographic nightmares:
@bluebottleroast
has distributed these flyers about so-called โmanagement rightsโ clauses amongst workers.
Aside from the incredible โIโm not owned!!! Iโm not owned!!!โ energy they give off, letโs talk about the flyer.
We want to welcome our newest members!! From 4th Street in Berkeley, they had a very successful march on the boss yesterday morning. We are so excited and canโt wait for more!
"B.B.I.U. intends to hold both Blue Bottle and Nestlรฉ to their proclaimed values of social consciousness by fighting for and demanding a living wage."
Proud to stand with workers fromย
@BBIunion
in Harvard Square as they file for an election to be recognized at Blue Bottle Coffee.
ย Cambridge is a union town!
Weโre incredibly thankful for the community support we receive from organizations like
@MassCOSH
!! When we win our contract we will win a safer workplace!
Last week, we supported an action organized by
@BBIUnion
as they fight to form an independent union. Blue Bottle refused to voluntarily recognize the union, so BBIU will now file with the National Labor Relations Board to hold an election. To help support:
Not only was it a flagrant last-ditch effort the DAY OF our election, but management also say that they donโt believe in workplace democracy, writing:
โCompanies are not operated by votes on managerial decisions.โ
Weโll be discussing the inโs and outโs of Indie Unionism with:

@TraderJoesUnite
- Rocky Prull from

are YOU a cafe worker? take a few minutes to fill out this workers inquiry and tell us about your work! weโve been collaborating with organizers across the Northeast to survey and interview cafe workers and we want to hear from YOU
What do cafรฉ workers think?ย ย What do we want? And how do we share those conversations that take place in โwalk insโ or walking to the bus after our shifts as to amplify our voices? Survey:
@workinquirywork
Yet another trip to the NLRB as
@BBIUnion
workers filed for a union election! There were so many workers and supporters there that we couldnโt all get in. Some of us waited until the worker rep returned, in time for the eclipse.
Solidarity eclipses corporate greed!๐โ๏ธ
Last night we held an informational picket outside of Blue Bottle as they held a voluntary Latte Art and Cup Tasters competition for baristas in the Boston area. We want to say thank you to management for not cancelling the event when they found out about our unionization.
@bluebottleroast
Has made it clear that they wonโt voluntarily recognize our union. Not only that, but they wonโt dignify our obvious majority of workers with a public response to our request for recognition! ๐งต
We have a mercy shop now!!
If you want to show your support for independent rank-and-file organizing (and look great doing it) consider copping a hoodie!
Weโre fighting for a living wage, democratic control of the workplace, and substantial protections from harassment!! When we win our election weโll also win an historic contract!!!!!
#BBIUNION
#Bluebottle
#nestle
They really wonโt stop with these flyers๐
Since we have not yet won a contract, we donโt have dues yet! Since we are a democratic rank-and-file led union, union members will VOTE on what we set as our dues structure.
This past Monday, April 29,
@CambMA
passed a resolution congratulating us on going public and expressing support for our union effort!!
Check it out here (pg. 1790-1791)
The IUF (International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations) have published an article about BBIU and their Nespressure Campaign. Click the link to learn more!
Only 1 day left for
@bluebottleroast
to voluntarily recognize our union based on the undeniable majority worker support that we have!!
We hope that they will act in good faith toward our union and voluntarily recognize us by Monday April 8, at 12pm EST.
Showing up to the cafes! If you aren't aware, our campaign publicly launched their across FIVE Boston Area stores on Wednesday, April 3rd! If you weren't able to stop by for their launch, you should still stop by any of the cafes, share your support, and tip your union baristas
ALL OUT FOR RALLY TODAY 3PM @ Lobby 7 steps (77 Mass Ave)!!! MIT has suspended 24 and arrested 19 students and workers in the last two days for peaceful protests. This discipline is disgusting, unjust, and against their union contract and illegal.
THREAD: With only a week left until our election,
@bluebottleroast
has been scrambling to spread misinformation about our union effort.
Within our cafes, management has been distributing flyers such as these. Letโs examine why itโs misleading ๐ต๏ธ๐ต๏ธ๐ต๏ธ
We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the workers in SINALTRAINAL!! It is inspiring to have solidarity from workers around the world and we are dedicated to fostering international solidarity! ๐ด
Coffee is an inexpensive commodity because of its colonialist history and because of the exploitation of workers across the supply chain from farmers to baristas! We therefore stand in solidarity with the international working class! โ๏ธโ
We are proud that we are able to compensate the lost wages of all the workers who walked out today with our worker-owned and run union fund!!!
If you want to support strong independent union organizing you can donate to it here!
Weโd like to thank management for letting union baristas compete and extend congrats to the talented baristas who will now move on to compete in Japan!
For this reason, workers across 5 Blue Bottle cafes have walked out to head to the office of the National Labor Relations Board to file for an election. If Blue Bottle wants an election, we will hold one and we will win!!
While we laude Blue Bottle leadership for committing to not retaliate against workers and treat workers with respect, we wish that they would have shown us respect with a public response to our request for recognition.
Special thanks to
@WorXPrinting
for helping set up our swag shop! $5 from every purchase will go directly to our worker owned and controlled union fund!
And if you want to contribute to our union fund directly, you can donate here:
On April 3, workers at five Blue Bottle locations in Boston, Massachusetts, USA announced the formation of the Blue Bottle Independent Union (
@BBIUnion
) and have demanded union recognition as well as collective bargaining with the company.
Especially since in the lead-up to our election, Blue Bottle attempted to union-bust through distributing anti-union flyers, sending letters to baristas homes, and having contractors visit the cafes to install cameras.
Despite their attempts to union bust, we still won!!!
Compass Coffee United is sincerely grateful for the support and solidarity as we continue with our union effort. Our workers have communicated need for financial assistance due to severe hour cuts, we have set up a gofundme to help on a case-case basis.
Congrats to the Coolidge Corner Theatre Union for filing for an election with the NLRB!!! We hope that
@thecoolidge
will voluntarily recognize their union and bargain with them in good faith ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ฝ๏ธ

The flyer is incredibly disingenuous in what it presents as myths. For their first talking point Blue Bottle tries to scare workers with the use of the term โexclusive agent.โ All this means is BBIU is going to the election to certify the union to bargain on BEHALF of workers
For those wondering, the QR codes lead to Bloomberg articles (yโknow, so baristas can read what the bourgeoisie write about unions) or to obscure case law (something thatโs definitely accessible to workers).
Myth and Fact
#3
is just insulting. In what world would workers agree to a first contract where they walk away in worse position than where they started??
If we were actually likely to get less, then Blue Bottle wouldโve already recognized and begun bargaining with us!!
Since we donโt have dues, if youโd like to contribute to our organizing and help us take on a
@Nestle
owned company, donate to our worker controlled union fund here!!
Baristas attended the competition as a display of good faith toward management for this reason! We want to thank the workers and community supporters who joined our picket outside the Newbury location before the competition began!
As the flyer states, management rights clauses typically cede any power to control the workplace that is not specified in a contract to management. This is entirely antithetical to what we are fighting for, which is DEMOCRATIC CONTROL of the workplace.
One major issue with this (aside from the fact that workers deserve to democratically make decisions about their workplace) is that these clauses are incredibly expansive in the power that they give to management. Managers should not have unilateral power
Now, two union members will be traveling to NYC to compete in semi-finals. We kindly ask that Blue Bottle continue to show good faith toward their baristas by voluntarily recognizing our union on or before Monday April 8th at 12pm.
summer term 2 starts in 3 days and BU Grad Workers are entering week 14 of our strike! โ
join us on the picket line this monday 7/1 to tell BU no COLA, no contract!!
