I recently ran into a situation where "identifying isomorphic groups" confused me for a while. Say H is a group isomorphic to ℤ⊕ℤ/2 so we may think that every element in H has a well-defined ℤ/2-part. But ℤ⊕ℤ/2 has an automorphism f with f(1,0) = (1,1) !

We know empty references in math papers, but more insidious are gaslighting references. A paper says "Theorem A follows from [23, Theorem B]". You look at [23], and yes the theorems are clearly related, but the implication is not clear at all! "Surely I'm not smart enough"..

Something that annoys me in math papers: sweeping parts of the proof under citations. You see "this follows from [AB97, Theorem 2.1]", but when you look the paper [AB97] up, it has such a different notation/setting that it is not clear how Theorem 2.1 is even related to 'this'.
