Thanks for the thread
@_alice_evans
! Jacob and I loved working on it and learning more about different social structures and how important they are for economic interactions.
In kinship societies, families care for kids who later reciprocate.
But in age-set societies, bands of brothers hunt together & have each others’ back.
Even if they receive cash, they do not prioritise kids.

"The invitation makes focal one identity of AC, which is woman, which is not the identity that should be focal in this circumstance. And remember that this could affect the long-term self-image that AC develops."

Conference organizers realize their panel is all men 2 weeks before conference.
Ask you to sit on panel--say you do not have to speak, but can if you want.

Here is how my rockstar colleague dealt with it (go to 1:27).
Elisa's work is incredible. Extremely creative, smart and relevant. Her JMP looks at how body mass is used as a signal of wealth in Uganda. She's a an amazing scholar, and an awesome person. Any department would be lucky to have her.

Well I guess a good thing would be that, potentially, people now have all the data on how people interact and who they interact with. Could be cool.
Yes to both this and to virtual office with
@L_Alhorr
.
Both have helped me a lot remaining connected with peers and feeling less isolated. Especially when leaving Cambridge, MA.
Agreed! One thing I’ve been doing this semester was to schedule morning coffees Zoom chats with people ending at 9AM. Not only it forces you to wake up early, but also you start working right after socializing a bit with a smile on your face and ideas flowing through your mind :)
"Much of what we know about the history of women's participation in the U.S. labor economy, the evolution of gender roles and the factors contributing to the lasting gender pay gap stems from decades of work by renowned economic historian Claudia Goldin."

Be kind and generous to other students. Find like-minded friends who are going to help and support each other through coursework and research, and who are going to reduce - not amplify - the stresses of academic life.

I agree with the sentiment, but the "all the time" formulation is easily misunderstood. Take time off, be a full person, care for your health, friendships, hobbies. (Incidentally, my least-bad ideas happen after a week or two of vacation. But that's not why I take vacations.)
My job market paper features on the Development Impact Blog! If you're interested in how tax rates and enforcement interact and what it means for tax policy in low-capacity states, then take a look at the post 👇
If Econ departments were truly serious about increasing diversity in the profession, wouldn't they ask
@berkeleyecon
why they've been uniquely successful in producing Black PhDs in a way no other top-20 department has in the last several years? They've produced 40% of the total!

I've been trying to call this number for days and it doesn't work from the US. I need to change my flight to Milan (today) and haven't been able to get in touch with any of your operators and get help.
