Professor of Theology, Archbishop Demetrios Chair in Orthodox Theology and Culture, Co-Founding Director, Orthodox Christian Studies Center
@fordhamorthodox
I have to say-“Western" academic silence on Hagia Sophia decision, especially from theologians & scholars of religion, is deafening. Unfortunately, not surprising, given the (mostly) absence of desire to learn about any other form of Xianity other than Protestant & Catholic kind.
What people should never forget is how much the Greek community vilified Iakovos when he marched at Selma. History proved him right, as it will for
@Elpidophoros
Today is St Mary Magdalene day. In the Byzantine hymns, she is referred to as η Απόστολος (in addition to Ισαπόστολος). If ordination is grounded in apostolic succession, how is it that we deny ordination to women?
Dear secular media, IR people, politicians, western theologians, etc.: PLEASE pay attention to the role religion is playing in Russian geopolitics. Stop pretending religion has nothing to do with it. Please. Stop. Pay Attention.
Translation: We really need more dictators who kill journalists, oppress the opposition, rig the courts, outlaw homosexuality, etc. All in the name of a “Christian” culture. That’s really living not by lies.
Still can’t get over how the Hungarians ended their annual national holiday celebrating the Feast of St Stephen, Hungary’s first Christian monarch, with drones making cross above Parliament. You’d never see that over US Capitol on July 4. I know why, but still. Go Hungary!
Christian overreaction is not a good missionary strategy for preaching the Gospel. By their words and example, the great ascetical mothers and fathers challenge us to move beyond being so easily offended.
“If any of you have arrived only at the eleventh hour, do not be dismayed for being late. The Master is gracious: He accepts the last even as the first.” Χριστός Ανέστη!
Orthodox celebrate Job the Prophet today. Everyone should read that book. Christians got this wrong—Job was not “patient,” even if he persevered. Written 3,000 years ago, it offers a better take on “theodicy” than any analytic philosophy, because it’s the anti-theodicy.
Today is St. Gregory of Nyssa day in Orthodox “new calendar” (i.e., the astronomically correct calendar). Beginning with St. Basil on 1/1, January is intellectual-saints month, a reminder that anti-intellectualism has no place in the Orthodox Church, or in Christianity.
In my opinion, this sums up an Orthodox political theology that supports democratic structures committed to a civic society that protects freedom and equality.
Every person, no matter who they are, or what they have done – for better or for worse – is worthy of God’s love. And if they are worthy of God’s love, then they are worthy of our love, too.
Today we lost Bishop Atanasije Jevtic-a kind, generous, passionate, compassionate pastor of the church. I’ll never forget how the children in Trebinje flocked just to be near him, & the genuine love he showed them. He was a great theologian and a man who lived his theology. ME!
Such a different message & tone than Kirill’s nationalistic screed given today. That’s why church needs transnational leaders who aren’t obligated to particular state or cultural interests & to remind that Christian identity transcends such localities even as it includes them.
His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew: "Arms are not the solution. On the contrary, they can only promise war and violence, sorrow and death. As our beloved brother Francis, the Pope of Rome, recently said: 'Let us not forget: war is madness.'"
“All people seek God and long for Him, regardless of whether they are believers or unbelievers...For when someone yearns for justice, love, and truth, they are really yearning after God.” (Elder Thaddeus of Serbia)
BREAKING: An immense step forward. Pope Francis calls for the decriminalization of homosexuality worldwide: "Declaring such laws 'unjust,' Francis said the Catholic Church can and should work to put an end to them. 'It must do this. It must do this.'"
St. Mary Magdalene day! Some hymns refer to her as “η απόστολος.” Look at the icon below. I don’t think mansplaining is part of the apostolic tradition.
He’s the Archbishop of the GOA—not the ‘Greek archbishop’. You should know better. To question his integrity is a cop out. He’s a PhD in theology, full professor at University of Thessaloniki. Where did you train in theology?
@roddreher
Bless his heart, the Greek archbishop condemns the Benedict Option, but I'd bet you my yearly tithe that he hasn't read it. They never have, these people.
On this date, 25 years ago, I married this stunningly beautiful and way-smarter-than-me woman. She has been and will forever be my best friend. Truly, madly, deeply.
Among other things, Putin said: “They [the West] have abandoned religion & embraced Satanism.” Religion plays an important role in his ideological rhetoric, but we need to remind ourselves and convince others that religion can & should also play a role to counter this rhetoric.
It’s time for women deacons. Zero theological or historical reason against it. Just good old-fashion self-identification vis-a-vis the proximate other. I.e., idolatry.
Please, please read this and disseminate as widely as possible. Not surprisingly, “Western” media is not giving this the attention it deserves and getting it very wrong. This story needs to be told. Please.
We are created neither to be ‘saved’ nor ‘to reign’ nor ‘to become like angels,’ (hymns tell us humans gifted w/ what angels don’t possess), but simply to be deified, to be like God, to love as God loves. Any other interpretation reads “Scripture” w/out studying fathers/councils.
70 years ago, on this date, my father, Fr Byron, arrived to US from Greece. Check out bottom-right stamp. Memory eternal to a remarkable man who helped so many people.
And someone else has to say why theological & historical literacy matters. This kind of diametrical opposition is simply not helpful. Insofar as the Nicene Creed is about Incarnation, which is about theosis, it is foundational for the liberation of the poor and the oppressed.
“populist parties are increasingly employing religious symbolism and rhetoric in an identitarian rather than a religious way. What appears to be an embrace of Christianity is more a celebration of cultural markers—Christendom without Christianity.”
I noticed many Orthodox and Orthodox-like experts dumping on earth day (no pun intended), hinting that it’s idolatrous; and, yet, the “sacramentality of creation” is Orthodoxy 101. Read Schmemann (the real one). The Orthodox police should really read more at
@FordhamOrthodox
Happy St. Kassiani day. She wrote one of the most famous hymns in history of Byzantine hymnography , that in order to be true to her memory and truly Orthodox, should take no less than 25 minutes to chant.
@GDemacopoulos
“...if Christ Himself walked through these doors, [teaching] that we should love our neighbor and our enemy, that we should welcome the stranger, that we should fight for the least of us…He would be maligned as a radical and rejected…” Amen.
Once again,
@Elpidophoros
is rising to the occasion in a way that is simply absent in most Orthodox leaders. Compare this prophetic declaration with Patriarch Kirill’s justifying war and violence for the sake of so-called “traditional values.”
The invasion of Ukraine must be squarely set upon the shoulders of Vladimir Putin. We are witnessing an immense tragedy of human suffering: the targeting of civilians, assassination and terror, and the deaths of innocents, especially children.
#Encyclical
Appeal to Krill by Synod of Ukrainian Orthodox Church—Moscow Patriarchate(UOC-MP): “Realizing our special spiritual responsibility, today we address His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.1/3
I saw this live. I admired it at the time. Very brave to call out institutional churches for their many failings. Just look at the institutional Russian Orthodox Church and its theology of violence and war. Remember: God is ironic. Scripture tells us so.
Gnosticism, the belief that the spiritual is what's really good & the physical doesn't really matter, is one of the larger ideas behind stuff like "gay marriage" & "female priests." We need a sacramental worldview that sees the body as good to counteract it.
There are Orthodox ‘theologians’ who write that desire is opposite of love. That point of view is not reflected in the patristic Tradition, but was actually articulated by the Lutheran theologian, Anders Nygren, in is now (in)famous book, “Agape and Eros” (1930) 1/10
Today is the Sunday of Last Judgment in the Orthodox Church (MT 25). 2 Sundays before Lent begins. Most miss the irony that we will be judged by how we treat those who break the rules. (Dostoyevsky got it). Enjoy icon below.
I know I should just ignore this & shouldn’t give it attention, but-wow. So, Orthodoxy, the true faith, should be about a hyper-masculine and patriarchal clericalism? I have read every book Schmemann wrote 1/2 I can confidently conclude that he would never say anything like this.
Oh wow, so a church that already has a heavily gay clergy is going to get even more effeminate, at the pontiff’s order. Pope Francis is doing more to evangelize indirectly for Orthodoxy than any of us actual Orthodox.
There can be reasonable Liberal-Conservative debate on how to structure liberal democracy, but this election was not about liberal v. conservative. It was about getting rid of someone who threatened our hope to live into a democratic promise. He needed to go.
Black-Hispanic pop culture is for the lowest of the low. Repetitive, primitive sounds & dance moves right out of the jungle. Man is regressing not progressing. Devolution not Evolution. Women dress, act like whores to entertain low-life fans.
#SuperBowlLIV
The most spectacular icon of Last Judgement, ever (sorry Michelangelo). Voronet Monastery. Today is Sunday of Last Judgement in Orthodox Church. 2 Sundays before start of Lent. (Next week is Forgiveness Sunday).
If this is confirmed, this is exactly what the Orthodox Church should be doing. Exactly. The pope is separating the political and the ecclesial space. 2 distinct debates. Should not be elided. In relation to the political space, this should exactly be the ecclesial response.
Today is the last day for “Christos Anesti.” “Let us embrace one another, even those who hate us. Let us forgive all things in the Resurrection” (hymn from Resurrection matins).
For those taking Orthodox cues from
@jordanbpeterson
(and
@roddreher
), I just read in last night’s Orthodox (Lenten) vespers:“While fasting in the body…let us also fast in spirit…let us undo the knots of every contract made by violence; let us tear up all unjust agreements;1/2
I know people often get upset with David Bentley Hart’s approach, but I honestly sympathize with his theological impatience. It’s amazing to me how what counts as ‘Orthodoxy’ often has no theological or historical support, but is some imaginary construction fueled by opposition.
Jürgen Moltmann: “there is no such thing as an un-political theology.” He is right, especially since how we engage politically implies a theology, whatever one’s beliefs. “Why does everything have to be political?”, because everything is theological & theology is about everything
@EcuPatriarch
has given a clear message, and now all the leaders of the autocephalous churches need to categorically condemn Russian aggression and the use of the Orthodox faith to justify this unprovoked attack on fellow Orthodox Christians. One way the ROC can unite Orthodoxy.
I think something should be said about the fact Russia continues attacks during Holy Week. However religion is used in this war, this confirms even more that Putin and the Regime believe in nothing other than their own non-religious twisted ideology. 1/2
And today (to the day) is 5-year memorial of my father’s passing. Memory eternal to Fr. Byron. I’m sure not too many have seen this pre-priest picture.
Most in West, including academic West, are clueless about this story of ethnic cleansing, looting, destruction, rape and murder in Constantinople orchestrated by the Turkish government in 1955. Read this thread. The pictures are jarring.
We cap off intellectual-saints months with Three Hierarchs day: SS Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. This feast day was constructed to end the debate on who was the greatest; and, of course, to emphasize the importance of education & ‘reason.’
From Fr. Schmemann’s journals. A real prophet of our era: “Instead of understanding change, and therefore dealing with it, Orthodoxy found itself crushed by it. Actually, it is defined, colored, and suppressed precisely by those ‘changes’ which it
denies.”
From the Synaxarion: “On this day we also commemorate the devout and blessed Olympias the Deaconess.” Those who deny the order of deaconess selectively choose from the tradition to support their secular ideology.
Let me try from different angle: The core of the Christian faith is “God became human so that humans may become gods”-Trinity, Xology, Anthropology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology in 1 sentence-how does a woman at the altar preclude our growth in theosis? I can’t connect the dots. ..
Today is St Mary Magdalene day. In the Byzantine hymns, she is referred to as η Απόστολος (in addition to Ισαπόστολος). If ordination is grounded in apostolic succession, how is it that we deny ordination to women?
Out for breakfast with the boys (father in-law and uncle) after liturgy. Exactly how the Feast of the Transfiguration should be celebrated. (Followed by a little siesta).
Today Orthodox Christian Lent begins, and the 40 days ends on the Friday before Palm Sunday because a) we count Sundays and b) Holy Week developed into its own liturgical cycle. May this be a blessed and fruitful Lent for all of us. Καλή Σαρακοστή!
Roman Catholics are required to believe that communion wine actually is literally the blood of Christ, and the wafer literally is his body. Not symbolically but literally. Not a metaphor but literally. That way madness lies. At very least it’s a pernicious abuse of language.
Today is feastday of St. Kallistos II Xanthopoulos. Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) nameday. Χρόνια πολλά to a man who’s contribution to Orthodoxy is immeasurable. Like with so many, his are the first books that really guided me to see the beauty of the Orthodox faith.
Today is last day of 40-day Orthodox Lent. Tomorrow is Saturday of Lazarus (a separate feastday) and then Palm Sunday (also a separate feastday). Holy Week begins Sunday night and the fast ends after the Anastase service. One of the very last hymns sung this morning says: (1/2):
