When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears-the glasses, the business suit-that's the costume.

I graded an essay contest (6th grade) on the pros and cons of online voting around 2008. One kid referred to the voters as the hoi polloi.

I think these elite schools have a two track system. One track is this networking club. The other is legitimate high quality training for talented scientists/technical people.

But weren't the people over the summer protesting police brutality while the people now are trying to overturn an election?
@MattBruenig
Would it make more sense to replace all of these programs with a cash transfer for anyone making below a certain income? Seems administratively simpler.

βWell, I'd like to see the NIMBYs wriggle their way out of THIS jam!β
*NIMBYs wriggle their way out of the jam easily.*
βAh! Well. Neverthelessβ

This is why my first footnote is always: βAny useful/novel ideas are the authors own, but errors are an oversight by the editor or referees.β
The people who attacked Capitol, intimidated & planned to maim & kill elected officials (including VP) are terrorists. Don't let anyone who makes excuses/sympathizes w/ them into polite society. If you have a platform, call them out on it.

A worker who could be servicing trains 8 hours a day could come in contact with toxic material for a longer period than the public who might be commuting for an hour a day. Also, they need protection from the cleaning products.
You might think you have free will, but the market has already calculated probability distributions of when you'll get married, how many kids you'll have, what age they will live to & how many cars they will buy. This is all reflected in price of Ford Motor Co. stock today.
@AndyGrewal
I don't understand professor. We all have opinions about what's right and wrong. How often do you let a committee decide those things for you?
@jdcmedlock
Here is a stupid question: if your income goes above the income guideline and you lose access to free breakfast and lunch for your kids, isnβt that an implicit tax? At $15/day (breakfast and lunch) and 250 school days, thatβs $3.8K per child.

But increasing housing supply by allowing developers to build brings down prices and allows us to provide homes for more people. Thatβs what Yimbys want to do.

Why didn't Bloomberg run in the GOP? A strong primary challenge from within his own party would have done much more damage to Trump than having another opponent from a different party in a 17 candidate primary.

Trying to find the exact quote from Robert Caro, but he says something like "Every city has its character. When u think Rome, u think glory; Paris, grandeur. NYC's character is it's a home for its people. U can be from Ohio or Bangladesh or Brooklyn and you can be a New Yorker".
@JJ_McCullough
Donβt think thatβs a fair characterization of their criticism. The criticism is that since 10/7, Israel has received significant military assistance from U.S. w/o any public calls for restraint by POTUS.
I donβt agree with this criticism, but thatβs what it is.
@SwiftOnSecurity
Isn't EOL software the most secure? I assumed that once software companies figure out and patch all the issues they EOL it because there is nothing left to fix?
@ebruenig
I was once a reader for a 7th-grase essay competition. The prompt was "Should online voting be legal?" One essay kept referring to voters as the hoi polloi. I was impressed by this 7th-graders disdain for the voting public (but did not share his/her underlying views).
@shadihamid
I think "much of the aggressively pro-Israel sentiment" is driven by people's revulsion of the Oct 7 terrorist attacks and a desire (1) to bring perps to justice and (2) make sure it doesn't happen again
