I talked with a student today who grew up with as much emphasis on diet/dress as on gospel. Now they're struggling to disentangle the two, tempted to throw it all out. The church has been gifted wisdom for living well, but when we elevate it to Law, it becomes a crushing burden.

Sabbath is a day to rediscover our humanity — that we are image bearers of God — and the humanity of one another. Whatever our superficial differences of nationality, class, or ideology, you too bear the divine image, and thus deserve to have your dignity recognized.

The universe tells us about God. That it had a beginning implies we are here by choice, not necessity. That it is fine-tuned implies God designed it for us. That there are natural laws implies God respects freedom. That we can do science implies God desires to be known.

In math, if you are wrong about something, it prevents you from making further progress. Therefore, you are incentivized to interrogate everything and when you realize that you were wrong about something, you celebrate that discovery as progress. Good approach to life, too.

I believe in the final judgment we will each confront an honest account of our lives. For those who lived hiding behind self-deception and manipulation, facing heaven's record will be hell. But the gospel allows us to honestly confront our worst — in the security of God's love.

The 10 Commandments begin by deconstructing toxic religion: 1. Do not worship the gods. 2. Do not image them. 3. Do not abuse religious power. Then it elevates humanity: 4-10. Humanity, not idols, are the image of the divine, thus imitate YHWH.
