Can we stop this now? Can we stop parading disdain for a whole genre as some sort of point of pride? And can we please commission writers who understand or at the very least respect the genre? There are plenty.
Um hi hello I wrote a book!! UNLIKEABLE FEMALE CHARACTERS traces the evolution of "unlikeable" women in film, TV and music. Out with

🎉 Congratulations, Anna Bogutskaya. You are a shortlistee in the 2024 Observer / Anthony Burgess Prize for Arts Journalism, for your review of Celine Song's film Past Lives.
Horror nerds, rejoice!

and I have curated a mammoth season of horror films old and new, lyrical and messed up, beastly and ghostly. From Oct-Dec, the

Some personal news...
After an amazing few years programming at
@BFI
, in a few weeks I’m moving on to be the Head of Arts & Culture at
@dicefm
.
If you see me roaming around the hallowed halls of the NFT touching the walls and having a lil sob, this is why.
The thing that really IRKS me is not the subject of the review (I didn't like Bly Manor but that's beside the point), it's that for no other genre or filmmaker working in a genre are critics allowed to display wanton ignorance.
In the hot seat this week for
@kermodeandmayo
with my takes on NOPE, EIFFEL, BLIND AMBITION and FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL. Plus an unexpected ode to Brendan Fraser. Out now!
A new Almodóvar film hits UK cinemas today! There's endless things to admire about his films, but one my favourite things have been the posters and graphics. So here's a thread of my faves:
Really, truly, mega-chuffed to have curated the season of my nightmares for
@BFI
CRUEL FLESH: FILMS OF THE NEW FRENCH EXTREMITY will be running throughout May at BFI Southbank and will explore this wild moment in cinema.
I've never been more jazzed about any event I've programmed. This is IT.

Summit will explore the power dynamics that exist in feminism, film and culture. A full day of panels, talks, short films + more 16 June

I've had the worst six months of my life but it's also the first time in years that I feel Christmassy. I've got a tree. I've got the jumper. I'm switching off my emails and I'm gonna be cosy.
Dead inside but need to look profesh? Get yourself a photographer like
@ella_kemp
who will make you look like you’ve experienced joy and looked good doing it
Really excited and humbled to be making my

⚡Personal news alert⚡Ecstatic to have signed with
@sileloquies
@MushensEnt
to rep me on all literary projects. Already practicing for my pretentious author portrait.
I wonder/moan about this a lot. The best & deepest film criticism is online & in podcast form (loads of it made for free). There is no investment in new film broadcast talent to reach new audience, no interest in developing critics into broadcasters. You have to be famous already
Why isn't there a good film programme on TV in UK?
Please don't give me usual answers (people don't watch, young aren't interested, they get info from elsewhere etc).
It's needed.
Really chuffed to have made my solo audio commentary debut with *this* film, *this* edition and *this* label. Can't wait to see this stunning edition in all its glory.
On Halloween Eve, we've got goosebumps to announce Feeding the Monster: a searching exploration on why we are increasingly drawn to the shocks and thrills of horror, by film critic and broadcaster
@annabdemented
🎃👻
I have a soft spot for the extreme nonsense of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, a film I watched too many times as a kid before I could tell the accents were dodge. Will always love Alan Rickman's unhinged, campy goth Sheriff of Nottingham.

Mia Goth says ‘change is necessary’ with the way the Oscars reject horror after ‘Pearl’ was shut out.
“I think that it’s very political… A shift should take place if they wanted to engage with the wider public. I think it would be of benefit really [to nominate horror movies].”
Here's a final day festival treat for you all💥

This year I produced

#MidnightMass
is out today & I urge people who don't consider themselves "horror fans" to watch it. It's a slow burn take on faith, belonging, regret & what it actually means be good. Flanagan wraps it up in supernatural goodness but it's so much more than a spooky priest.
✨Personal news✨
For the past few months I've been programming for the

It reframes the ideas of Hellraiser in a way that I personally find boring. I don't think it's a bad film because it succeeds in what it sets out to do, but loses out on the elements of desire, pleasure and kinkiness that made Hellraiser so exquisite.
Back at it again... with the

I'm so happy to have been in the room tonight with Jesse Armstrong and the writers, with an audience reacting to every zinger and side-eye, gasping and screaming at every turn. What an exhilarating way to end Succession.
