Bad take. A billionaire declining their payment for exposure of their global company is NOT the same as an unpaid intern taking work to get their foot in the door.
Here is another fun little shader I made today: hose vertex extrusion but the mask is also applied to the influence of the Normal Map.
Will share graph screenshots in thread!

2018.3, Particles now have an External Forces module for different force shapes! This example has a cylinder force field on the Fan and a Sphere force field on the floating orb. Built-In Components; no code! :)

Input System!
Incredibly easy to setup local multiplayer; no code changes to have input for multiple players using different controllers: Keyboard, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch working together. 😊

Just had my first cold-call recruiter randomly slide into my LinkedIn DMs about a role that requires using Godot Engine!
The games industry engine tides are slowly changing, folks! 🚤
If
#GDC2020
is cancelled because of the Corona Virus; perhaps all the speakers can stay at home, record their presentations and upload them online for free?
Would certainly be useful to much more people and also would reduce carbon footprint!
Hey
#unity3d
folks! I am doing an Online Live Training of an Introduction to Shader Graph today. :) Come and learn how to start making shaders with no code!
Made this

UI Overlay Blur Scriptable Render Pass example this morning; still some more things to add and be technically-verified before it can be released. :)
Using Universal Render Pipeline!
I think this 'Realistic Interactive Grass Shader' works now?! Only Y Position of Grass Blades; still need to add X and Z directional bending.

Under the App Store's new fee structure for Europe, if you make $10 million in sales, Apple's cut is $6.2 million annually.
Assuming you have no operating costs or salaries, your take home amount:
$2 million after tax—or 20% of your sales
I will never launch an app in Europe.
My first hot-take of 2024:
Unity should bin off the expensive chase for ultra realistic high-end realtime rendering and just focus on making the tooling cross platform for all other art types (stylised, toon, low poly, 2D, etc).
Focus on WHY studios choose the engine.
I haven't touched code or shaders for quite a few weeks so I put together this little experiment to refresh:
Augmented Reality Bubbles!

2D Example Project for a while; and whilst its not ready yet (I'm currently tidying the project for public release!) here is a sneak peek at some of the VFX I've made for it. 😊
Game engine joking aside in the video's caption text; This is

and its seriously impressive how intuitive & powerful it's lighting system is for a free open source engine! 🤩

I have alot of thoughts about this, but the only one im sharing is how baffling a $2 million signing bonus is for a company who has been aggressively making cuts to save money.
Former Zynga COO Matthew Bromberg is the new CEO of Unity
The new chief exec will net an annual base salary of $850,000, a litany of stock awards, and sign-on bonus worth $2 million
This is the game project I have been working on for the last 9 months!
Ive mostly been working on Physics Character Controller, SFX Tools, VFX Tools, Animation Tools, Collectable System, Environment Mechanics, etc.
Happy to answer any questions! :)

Fun little evening experiment making a shader that 'replicates' low-precision of geometry calculation; resulting in a weird 'vertex-shuffling' effect.

Zoom laying off 15% of staff, but this part of the announcement is incredibly important and should really set a standard for all other tech corporation leadership.
@unity
Honestly, I take zero pleasure in any of this news. Its very depressing to see a company I once loved and championed with 100% of my energy just sabotage itself so swiftly. 15+ years of community and trust building just gone. Disappointing.
Imagine a world where game engine companies poured as much resources into game UI authoring & workflows as they did making a trillion particles on screen or shadows being slightly nicer.
After Nested Prefabs/Prefab Variants; the dockable Unified Settings window is definitely the best new Editor Feature of

'1917' directed by Sam Mendes.
Absolutely Phenomenal.
The Cinematography, Music Score, Set Pieces and Practical Effects are some of the best I've ever seen on a cinema screen. And they all fit perfectly together. Horrific, tense and beautiful film for 2 solid hours.
10/10
Its kind of fascinating that game engines have reached a point where you can turn on high-end rendering features & capabilities (Lumen, Nanite, SDFGI, etc) in 3 or 4 clicks; but adding a screen adapting optimised UI scroll list is still a huge mountain of work.
After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.
When employees of many years are laid off for short term company gains; you are not only losing the domain career experience they have but also their knowledge on the company's internal processes, connections and workflows.
All of this absorbed guerilla info is suddenly gone.

Ah, I read somewhere that some artists did get paid. My bad!
Still doesn't change the fact that the original take is bad. :D
Whilst 2020 was terrible for many reasons; I was lucky enough to personally have an excellent year:
- Finally met my best friend and partner
- Moved into a home together
- Shipped several work projects I am very proud of
- Work/Life Balanced
- First year I did not crunch!
Credit where it is due; Unity Technologies were super relaxed (and often encouraging) for employees to work on their own games/projects outside of work hours.
Even released a contract addendum anyone could sign to override your previously-signed contract if it said otherwise! 😍
with all the microsoft news recently i just keep thinking back to this bit in episode 27 of double fine psychodyssey (the excellent making-of documentary for psychonauts 2) where matt booty tries to reassure the team post-acquisition and in the process says all the wrong things
Finally! After 10 years of using the engine, 6 years working at Unity Technologies, hundreds of tech presentations delivered and hundreds of feature demo projects built and shipped; my Influencer Career can now finally begin!

Showed the prototype to the client.
They didn't like the quality of the realtime shadows.
We agreed, but we couldn't work out how to make them better.
Ended up switching shaders to unlit/no shadows and called it a 'stylistic art direction'.
They approved.
Epic Games laying off their entire Online Training team is some baffling decision making. 🙃
Surely now is the PERFECT time to put more resources into that team whilst studios are evaluating UE for their next engine? 🤔
Im already looking into setting up an online webinar/video for my GDC Talk: "Unity’s New Input System – Setting up Multi-Platform Game Controls in Minutes" 🙂
We’ve made the tough decision to cancel our on-the-ground activity at GDC 2020, due to current conditions with COVID-19. The health and safety of our employees, partners and friends is our top priority. More info to come on what we’ll be sharing online.
I was asked by extended family what non-violent, relatively short-playtime and visually colorful games would be best for an 11 year old to play.
My recommendations:
- Monument Valley 1&2
- Minit
- Lume & Lumino City
Any other recommendations? :)
