Just a reminder that not only did civil servants work 24/7 in their places of work and homes worldwide to support the Afghanistan response, a number actually flew *to* Kabul in the midst of a dangerous crisis in order to help people leave.

Just finished reading 'Silent Earth' by @DaveGoulson - a scary examination of how much worse things have got for insects - and hence the planet, and us all - since Rachel Carson wrote 'Silent Spring', made even scarier by Dave's scrupulous balance with the evidence. A must read.

Slowdive was immense tonight. I've obviously been listening to them too quiet because they sound amazing loud. Surprisingly (to me) the oldies stood out. Catch The Breeze was great but then Alison - When The Sun Hits - Golden Hair at the end was something else... Gig of the year.

Just finished this superb book by @peterfrankopan - fantastic true tales of lost metropolises in the 1st half reminded me of Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities', while the last 150 pages are the starkest environmental warning since 'Silent Spring' - what amazing range in one book!

#RideTop15 2. Chelsea Girl The thing about Ride is they were the first great band I was into from their first release - until then I'd been playing catch-up with the Cure, Smiths and Pixies. So they felt like they were *mine*, and this song stood out from day one as special...
