Sharing this today to remind everyone that as much as oppression is part of the fabric of this place, so is resistance. We can beat them, & we will. Listen to our elders, to their tactics, to their failures. We are not alone, & our struggle isn’t new.
I have to say that the most Taurus thing my girlfriend does is that she has all of her notifications silenced because she “wants to be the one who chooses when to engage with people or not.”
They really told us that the 2008 bank bailout was a “once in a lifetime event” & now they’re here 15 years later bailing out the banks again while claiming that student loan debt cancellation is a “step too far.”
As a gay teenager, I never felt like I had the support I needed, especially given the fact that my home life was fractured & very off balance. That’s why, for this pride month, I’ve partnered with Dr. Scholl’s Custom Fit Orthotics,
Haven’t seen many of the nonfiction books I adored this year on “Best of” lists. (I think I know why…) Anyways, just thought I’d put this out there so y’all can get into some really great works that deserve your attention. I’ll thread them.
In case you can’t grasp the gravity of this, that’s ~460,000 people infected with a highly contagious virus trapped in places that purposely keep them locked up in extremely close quarters with each other. Prisons are/always have been designed to kill.
This blew up for absolutely no reason & aside from people defending landlords here, I think the funniest thing is that people genuinely don’t seem to understand rent can be due at other times besides the 1st. Rent is due the same day of the month I signed my lease, you weirdos.
Also, people replying saying he spent it on his mortgage?? Bro, that’s not my problem at all, and he still shouldn’t be replying to me like this. Grow up.
One last thing & then I’m never looking at this tweet again. Saw someone in these replies say something about “maybe he’s living month to month as well”....he’s NOT. He has multiple properties & a whole ass other job. Being a landlord isn’t good or righteous. Please stop.
I really hope teachers out there know they can actually do whatever with AP curriculums. Most guides for the humanities are fairly loose suggestions. I’ve been teaching AP for 6 years that uses 0 of the suggested texts. Every year, I only have about 2-3 students who don’t pass.
My girlfriend couldn’t remember the title of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” so she called it “I’m Gonna Lose My Baby, It’s Christmas.”
Many of you would benefit from learning that not all endings (to stories, novels, films, etc.) are resolutions. Some endings ask more questions, force us to come up with resolutions yourself, or remind us that some questions in our world have no answers (yet).
I always considered this part of the danger of being conflict averse...that you never really get to know yourself. Leaning into conflict is a really hard but essential thing for our growth and development. It’s ok to be scared AND do it anyways.
Just overheard my gf tell someone she works with “Unfortunately, I cannot be a bearer of good news at this moment” really warmly which is probably the cutest delivery of something disappointing that I’ve ever heard in my life.
It’s evil to feign shock & sadness on here when Black people are attacked by the police, then do nothing concrete to help destroy these systems & help support Black people while they’re alive. The further you get from actually acting, the better these systems learn to adapt.
Please spread the word to those who need it: CVS opened vaccine appointments to all K-12 teachers in Florida and across much of the South. The appointment sign-up is right on the homepage of the CVS website.

“I was born twice: first, as a baby girl on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974.” (Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex)
Writers & media people, you can easily add your name to this open letter demanding the New York Times stop their awful reporting on the lives of trans people & our right to exist in the world. Please do it. It takes 2 seconds.
@sheabutterfemme
absolutely sick that people think organizers are just a bunch of bored rich kids with time and that working class people are incapable of organizing. historically, it simply doesn’t even add up.
My mom died tonight. She’s 61. She gave me art & literature & a firm resolve. Our relationship was shaped & strained by her struggles with addiction. Her body couldn’t fight for her because it was weak from it. She’s 61. I’m 34. I’m her eldest. I don’t know how to hold this.
Just putting this essay I wrote for
@autostraddle
back up today. It’s about the history of queer resistance in Florida, & it’s also about how plutocracy works here. I think it’s worth reading if you don’t know shit about this place.
Both The New York Times & The Atlantic are run by spineless cowards who instead of critiquing or standing up to fascism just fucking actively encourage it.
Why are people insisting that converting to catholicism is cool now? Listen, no one needs a cover to be extremely gay & into Byzantine art anymore. We’re past that.
@thefrankiedlc
@yesmagazine
My friend and I were literally JUST talking about getting a cornhole team together because it’s the only non-sex-segregated sport lmao
@sheabutterfemme
People also don’t seem to make the connection that perpetuators are often survivors, too. I get the question all the time of why I work in prisons “instead of” working with survivors of violence. The commitment to that binary also makes this problem you’re speaking on persist.
Hey freaks! Some friends of mine & I created a sick shirt, & we’re giving a portion of the proceeds to TransSocial, an org in South Florida working to support trans & non-binary people here. Consider pre-ordering 1 or just share this to help us out! Pre-order below & in my bio!
My gf just walked into the room and said, “You know what I just realized? We had a group called the Spice Girls, and only one of them got it right…Ginger. She was the ONLY spice.”
Deeply, deeply funny to me that the NY Times got not one but TWO letters signed by thousands telling them they suck at covering trans people’s lives & they responded by saying they’re good at it, actually, & we just don’t get that. Wild audacity. And then today, they publish this
@legroff
People also discounting the fact that 1k people a day have moved here since mid-2020 chasing the COVID freedoms DeSantis promised, making the margins between registered GOP & Dems the largest they’ve been in over 5 years.
I wrote about strength training, how it’s changed the way I see & understand my relationship to my own body, & how some of the strongest people in the world are fat just like me. You should read it.
Happy International Women's Day to trans women, women of color, Indigenous women, disabled women, poor women, women who carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, and women who can't fight any fights except the one to make it to the next day.
Some people in prison already don’t get their mail on a regular basis. COVID-19 + the shrinking of USPS resources is making it so they’re barely getting it. Just layers and layers of cruelty.
I think eating tacos at your secret spot then going to the 8:45 p.m. showing of Cocaine Bear at your local cineplex with your girlfriend can be very romantic, actually.
I get that we shouldn’t have to but as always, finding ways to take care of each other outside of the state’s control is what will keep us alive. We have to organize & stay organized in order to fight back. There is no other option.
1. I didn’t know my life was missing this book before I read it. Just an absolutely mind-blowing work that changed the way I think about writing about myself & the people who helped make me.
@woahitsjuanito
It’s like yeah, that’s horrible & we don’t talk about it enough, so it’s good that there’s a movie coming out (that she’s producing!!) to make us grapple with how fucked that is. Like why did they decide this was an endorsement & not an indictment of some kind??
I know y’all hate thinking about the South as a place of resistance & radical possibility but I’m really happy that this piece was published today. You should read it.
Reps in Florida just introduced HB991 which would make it possible for people to sue other people for defamation for $35k (at least) for calling out things like racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. in person (or on the internet!!).
2.
@caseyparks
got me to cry while reading (pretty rare!) several times. This book is such beautiful combination of memoir & investigation & I’ve thought about it almost every day since I finished it.
No one:
Absolutely no one:
Possibly intoxicated stranger at 7-11 pointing to my manatee tattoo: “How are you gonna explain this when they all go extinct in the next 20 years or so?”
Earlier today, this woman at the gym was asking my name & an older guy (who I love) responded to her by saying “Their name is Stef but we all just call them ‘brother,’ & they respond.” 🥹 Seriously love that place so much.
@imbobswaget
sometimes i worry big tech will find the technology to allow these billionaires to live forever, then i remember teams is proof they won’t
As of today, I’ve accomplished 1 of my first goals I set for myself when I started at the strength gym in August. Unfortunately, I know that talking about it openly on here will probably give me agita so please celebrate my cryptic success with me anyways!!
@Kristen_Arnett
it’s a good question because technically yes, but also, wouldn’t other people’s ~levels~ affect yours? we need a capital S scientist on this.
Y’all care about this lady WAY too much!! You need to start spending this money on your communities to help us all figure out how we’re going to create a world where people like her can’t harm us anymore!!
I don’t talk about my job hunt much on here but I do think it’s unfortunate how many people view teachers/former teachers as not viable candidates for jobs that directly involve managing people or building relationships. I’m sorry, but what do they think teaching IS?
Being a fat person at a health club gym* is a weird experience. So, I’m going to start a thread ranking/reviewing the things I hear from people when I’m there.
*This is not the same gym as the strength gym I go to. The people at the strength gym are normal about fatness.
If someone can help me arrange this, I will fight every politician who has said something about “thoughts and prayers” over the last 24 hours and Matt Yglesias on national TV.
Really proud of this essay. I wrote about the wild history of female bodybuilding, Love Lies Bleeding, & the fear of the muscular, “monstrous” woman & what she can do with her body. Please read it!
HB1421 is being heard in the Florida legislature in a few hours. If passed, it will bar any trans person from seeking gender-affirming care through insurance & will take gender-affirming care away from trans youth entirely. Are y’all paying attention??
I recently discovered there was a members-only gay & lesbian dinner & dance club in the very early 80s near where I grew up & found a FB page dedicated to it & people’s memories of it that hasn’t been updated since 2011 but I still check it twice a week hoping for more content.
Every time a new Shyamalan movie comes out, The Village discourse on the timeline is insufferable. Y’all did not watch that movie b/c if you did, you’d see/know it’s 1 of the most poignant reflections on the aftermath of 9/11 rendered in media.
I wrote what is potentially my most personal essay yet on Autostraddle about queer teen angst, gender feelings, having sex, getting fucked up with my friends, feeling fucked up b/c of everything, & some other stuff in between. It would mean a lot to me if y’all read it.
“Every punk party—whether it was in Ft. Lauderdale or Lake Worth or North Miami—had the exact same drink options. Either you were drinking Mickey’s or you were doing shots of Jack Daniels.”
Read
@ancillarytext
’s essay on tumultuous queer teenage years.
Grief is such a strange thing made even weirder by the reality that the people around you are rarely experiencing the same kind of grief you are despite the fact that you’re all mourning the same person’s death.
A young organizer in Miami was shot and killed on Thursday, and their family doesn’t have enough money for funeral and burial services. Please, please considering donating if you can. And please share widely.
Probably 1 of the best things ever just happened. I was in the post office talking to the postal worker I know about the Toni Morrison stamps coming out next year & an elderly lady overheard me & invited me to join her book discussion group called “The Bookies.”
I asked my girlfriend if she wants to watch “The Neverending Story” because she’s never seen it & she said no because “the effects look like shit” & she doesn’t “want to see that dog flying.”
