Foundation news.
When the bar called last call, my manager grudgingly announced me as winner (and the following year added the rule that staff couldn't win). And that's how and why I went to Ireland for the first time. 😸 END.
Short story: circa 2002 or so I worked at an Irish pub in Brussels. Halloween in Brussels in 2002 wasn't a thing, no bars celebrated it, no one dressed up at all. But this pub decided to host a costume contest on a busy Friday night. The prize? A free trip to Ireland. (...)
A job board on the Rails website has been a frequent request since the Rails Foundation launched, and it is needed now more than ever. Find your next role, or your next Rails developer, here:
Today we're introducing the official Rails Job Board, a platform for Rails developers to find their next role (and companies to find their next Rails developer). Get started and find your next career match here:
I continue to be impressed by all the ways the
@rails
community turns up to support the work that the Rails Core, Committers & Issues team do. And I had so many great conversations this week on the Rails Foundation's goals and plans. Here's to the next 20 years! ✌️
#RailsWorld
That's a wrap! Rails 8.0 beta was released at this year's
#RailsWorld
in Toronto where more than 1,000 Rails developers met for 2 days of talks by 27 speakers, and 2 nights of parties. Thanks to all who made it. See you next time!
Just discovered the YouTube feature on my gym's treadmill. Fun fact: a 30min run will get you through approx 7-8 videos in the
@GoRails
beginner tutorial and distract your mind from the work your body is doing. 🏃🏽♀️💪 What other Rails tutorials should I check out?
Here's a testament to the
@Rails
community: the guy who ran the merch store at
#RailsWorld
is a good friend who was doing me a favor. When we wrapped and debriefed, he said, 'It was really refreshing to be around so many people who clearly love what they do.'
I probably drove Amanda crazy with my quality and design requirements for the new Rails merch. But I've gotten so many swag shirts I'd never wear myself, and they just end up in a landfill. The Rails shirt and hoodie for sale now on
@shopify
are ace 👌
Rails in Focus is a new YouTube series of Rails tips and best practices for Rails devs of all levels, made by the community, for the community.
@siaw23
is your first host with an episode about
#DelegatedTypes
. More videos coming soon, so be sure to head over to YouTube and
After walking off the
#RailsWorld
stage,
@dhh
chatted with
@shopify
's Elise Shaffer about what you can expect from his Opening Keynote, and what he is personally most excited about. It will be published later today on YouTube channel, so subscribe to be notified:
This sounds familiar, where have we heard this before?
@Rails
may go about it differently, but the end goal is the same: removing complexity, adding simplicity, increasing developer happiness, and welcoming the next gen to the fun. It's great. More frameworks should follow suit!
This is how Laravel will win. 💯
"Our goal is to make it easier for new people to come into Laravel, deploy an app, and see how productive they can be. I would love for people's first web programming language to shift back to PHP."

I walked in on the bride and groom doing coke before the wedding. At the reception they played hard techno despite elderly family members present, and groom eventually collapsed in a fit of sobbing after a fight with the bride. Not my friends, I was a +1 at this delightful union.
In his
#RailsWorld
Closing Keynote, Rails Core member and
@Shopify
Senior Staff Engineer
@tenderlove
looks at how language servers work, how we can improve language server support in
#Rails
, and how this will increase our productivity as Rails developers.
These companies are the reason
#RailsWorld
is happening. From
@AppSignal
as Platinum sponsor, to Gold sponsors
@babbel
,
@Shopify
, and
@ViaEurope
, to the Silver, Program, and Scholarship sponsors and all of the Rails Foundation members seen here. THANK YOU!
In the lead up to
#RailsWorld
we would like to take a moment to thank the Gold sponsors who are helping make this event happen:
@babbel
,
@Shopify
, and
@ViaEurope
. Stop by their booths in the Sponsor Lounge next month to say hello.
Having a really hard time working this week because I can't stop staring at the new design for the Rails Guides. 😍
@JohnAthayde
is nailing it. So fresh. So clean. So close to going live...
After ten months of trying and one very helpful person accessing email that they haven't had in 15 years, I finally got
@railsworld
handed over 🥳 (old posts still up).
#RailsWorld
news will still be shared on
@rails
, but any accidental tags will land in the right place now.
And so I sat at the bar for the next 5 hours, fielding question after question about why I was dressed like a cat in a busy disco pub on a Friday night in Brussels. Each time I would smile a wide Cheshire cat smile, point at the poster, and say, 'I am winning a trip to Ireland.'
I did it. I responded to all 427 applications for the junior-mentor project to make the Rails World website. I know how frustrating it is to apply and never hear back, so I was determined to get back to everyone. But holy cow. Will rethink my strategy next time.
Ahhhh, two weeks out from an event, when all the weird sh*t starts happening: airline strikes, stroopwafel overload, babysitting requests, swag issues, last minute dashes for design elements, 600 emails asking for exceptions. 🔥 Bring it on. 🔥
@danielberg_
@rails
Give us a few more weeks. This is one of the reasons the Rails Foundation was launched, and we have a UX designer working on that right now.
It's so fun seeing two fully all-Rails PWAs getting set up for
#RailsWorld
- the app by
@TelosLabs
and the
@37signals
Campfire! It's a conference about Rails, for Rails, and powered by Rails. Nearly there...
Wishing the Rails community a wonderful end to 2023. Thank you for keeping the ecosystem positive and thriving. Here's a quick look back at what the Rails Foundation accomplished in 2023, and a hint of what's to come next year. See you in 2024!
This is the second best answer when I reach out to find out if an app is built on Rails. So I'm passing on the kudos to the thousands of contributors who made Rails what it is today. ❤️
When I got back, despite the Halloween decorations and posters announcing the costume contest, no one understood why I was dressed like a cat. WTF was written on everyone's faces.
You know the city, now save the date:
#RailsWorld
2024 will take place Sept 26 & 27. Mark your calendars! More info (tickets, sponsorships, cfp. etc) coming soon.
Saw the word 'idempotently' in the Rails Guides. Now wondering how to phrase it in simple terms for someone who didn't graduate with a CS/math degree & who might speak English as a 2nd language. Or! Someone like me who *does* speak English natively but has never seen the word.🤔
The Rails Foundation wants to support junior developers with more opportunities, so here is one:
#RailsWorld
needs a website! Junior devs (and mentors) please apply within:
Hope you can join us for the first
#RailsWorld
this October in
#Amsterdam
! More news and updates coming soon, with a particularly fun announcement next week 👀. Watch this space:
@rails
Exciting news: The Rails Foundation is launching our first-ever conference: Rails World. Join us Oct 5 & 6 in Amsterdam, NL for keynotes, technical sessions and all things Rails. Website with tickets and CFP coming soon!
The Rails Foundation was set up to be a megaphone for the work that the Rails Core is doing. Their involvement and context is important. But the level of involvement is entirely up to them. More in the 🧵
Also, if you are a company based in LATAM and built on
@Rails
, please come find me and say hi! I'd love to get to know the Rails LATAM ecosystem better and see how the foundation can support the growth of Rails in South America.
Now that
@tropical_rb
is here and I am going over this agenda again, I'm pretty excited about meeting up with some familiar faces in São Paulo, but also meeting familiar names in person for the first time. Best of luck in the coming days to the
@tropical_rb
team!
50% of
#RailsWorld
submissions came in within 48 hours of the deadline, and a whopping 40% of the total came in the last 24 hours. And I won't name them, but one person submitted precisely at the stroke of midnight (EST) when the CFP closed.
I used eyeliner to paint on whiskers, and voila! J'etais un chat. I headed back to the pub. Here is where I would like to stress again that Halloween in Brussels in 2002 really, really, really wasn't a thing. (...)
Today someone showed me an app he's working on, a passion project with real potential, built on 😃
#Rails
. In just 2 months, he's whipped up a snappy little app with fun extra AI & Turbo features. The things I see developers doing with just an idea & this framework! So impressed.
I know we are supposed to completely unplug from work over the weekends, but sometimes a few hours of uninterrupted, no-meetings-to-distract-you, head down and work time on Sundays can really set my week up well. In completely related news:
#RailsWorld
news coming up this week.
Still working on the keynote because I keep wanting to change and improve Rails to make it easier to demo, describe, and use 😂. Can't wait to share the full vision of Rails 8 with everyone next week, though.
The team effort on this one was amazing and covered a lot of ground already, but now we'd love your input. If you consider yourself an Active Model savant, take a look:
The
#ActiveModel
documentation has just been reviewed and edited and the PR is now up for community review. Fair warning: this is a lengthy guide, but if you have time and want to help, please take a look:
Rails World is not just a conference. It’s a freaking festival to what
@Rails
stands for.
It’s the testament that Rails is not just “here to stay”, but it’s here to push the boundaries of what development can be.
The framework, the committers, the community and the ecosystem

The
#RailsWorld
CFP is live and we are excited to see what you come up with. We're also excited that we can offer speakers $400 usd this year to offset the cost of travel thanks to our sponsor
@FullscriptHQ
. 🥳
The
#RailsWorld
2024 Call for Papers is now open. Here’s an overview of what talks we are looking for (30 min original technical talks), what’s new this year (a $400 travel stipend for each speaker thanks to
@FullscriptHQ
), and how to submit.
My shift ended at 9pm. I went straight home and rummaged through my things looking for a costume, any costume at all. I found a headband with cat ears, a leopard print dress, and a pin-on cat tail, all items my mom had recently given to me because...
My mom clicked on the Issues and Committer team names she found on the Rails website. This led her naturally to GitHub, where she clicked and scrolled around, so I took a photo.
Her: 'What are you taking a photo of?'
Me: 'You on GitHub.'
Her: '...Is that what this site is?'
😂♥️
Imagine walking into a bar on a random night in April, and someone is dressed like a werewolf, sipping a pint. Doesn't make sense, and neither did my costume. But I wanted that trip to Ireland, and I figured a little ridicule was a small price to pay. (...)
And this is only half of the
@Rails
Foundation! We're doing important work and 2025 is going to be a lot of fun. If you'd like to join our mission and support the Rails community by becoming a member, reach out to foundation

I know this wasn't an easy decision to come to, but knowing the impact of events on a non-profit's bottom line, I fully understand the desire to refocus that budget elsewhere. Looking forward to seeing where
#RailsConf
2025 lands in the world! I'll be there.
Our final — yes, final — RailsConf in 2025 will be a special one focused on celebrating the Rails community. Read more about this, other big changes happening at Ruby Central and how you can get involved here:
while Halloween in Brussels was not a thing, we were American through and through, and we had brought remnants of our "culture" with us when we moved to Belgium. (...)
Fun fact: 33% of all
#RailsWorld
talk submissions came through in the final 2 days of the CFP. (60 out of 181) Wish the content committee luck & speed - they've got a lot of tough decisions to make quickly. Good luck to all who submitted. We'll be in touch as soon as possible!
Am still gathering my thoughts and notes (and energy 😅) after 3 amazing days in Brazil at

Please welcome Amanda Perino as the executive director of The Rails Foundation, leading our mission to improve the documentation, education, marketing, and events in the ecosystem.
We're moving
@maybe
to
@rails
.
We'll be creating a new "rails" branch on the main repo by the start of next week & then move it to main by the end of February.
The React codebase will be moved to a new repo then.
...and you thought things were moving fast before. 🎉
The Rails World app by Telos Labs will be open source. Any of the (many!) events in our space are welcome to use it. We hope it can also serve as a great starter project for junior devs looking to get involved in open source. Big thanks to the team at Telos Labs for this!
#RailsWorld
update: Telos Labs is not just building the app for this year's event - in the spirit of
#Ruby
and Rails, they are open-sourcing it and gifting it to the entire community for any Ruby event to use. Follow along as they build in public in the coming weeks:
Just recorded a podcast with
@yarotheslav
for the SupeRails channel on YouTube. We discussed the Rails Foundation,
#RailsWorld
, and the CFP. Coming soon!
Me a few hours ahead in Europe, poking
@excid3
on Slack for feedback on a Top Secret project for
#RailsWorld
. It's not like he's got a family, several businesses, a podcast, and a Rails World talk to prepare or anything, right? *poke*
Heads up: the
#RailsWorld
CFP will be open soon and will stay open for 7 weeks. The goal is that speakers will be confirmed before tickets go live to the general public.
Action shot of the

@buzzsprout
so enthusiastically made this podcast booth a reality when I approached

with the idea!) 🎙️

We're looking for an intern to join us

this summer.
You'll build, test & deploy an open source
