Political Correspondent - formerly of TalkTV, Huffpost, politics. co. uk. Now covering the election for Times Radio, Channel 4, BBC News, Sky and more.
I’m in Uxbridge asking Boris Johnson’s constituents if they’d vote for him again as their MP and a man just spat on me and screamed an array of profanities in my face for ‘Boris bashing’. Anyway, apparently working in PR is fun. Or finance. Just a thought.
Welcome to the Reform UK Battle Bus - Temple Run edition.
We are being garrotted by trees, I’ve got twigs in my hair and there are pensioners on the floor.
Matt Hancock gave a speech at a Bright Blue event last night, on how to get young people connected to the Conservative Party. He said he rarely wears a suit or tie as he’s ‘a normal person now’ which helps him to better connect to people he represents. A few things stood out🧵⬇️
Just prior to Lee Anderson’s resignation, a senior Conservative MP told me:
“He’s wanted an ‘out’ of the party for ages. He just needed an excuse -an issue which allowed him to resign as a martyr of the right like Suella did.”
“He is not a true Conservative and he knows that.”
I’m with
@BBCNews
until 6pm from Downing Street alongside
@BenThompsonTV
- popping up every now and then between the many election speeches of the day. Join us!
He’s no longer a Conservative MP. He’s Independent as he lost the whip over his fleeting dabble in reality TV. Speaking about how the Conservatives should connect with young people whilst not a Conservative, comes across more critically than it would had he still been a member.
Yeah all totally fine and normal. Don’t mind me, just thigh-deep in the River Wye, costumed up, wielding a
@TimesRadio
microphone, chatting to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Nothing strange about my day.
Sunak is dodging the question about whether or not HS2 will go ahead on BBC Manchester.
He says “most people travel by car” and talks about how he plans to fix potholes.
Can’t help but wonder if people travel by car because of the lack of decent trains? Just a thought.
The Prime Minister has had Community Notes added to most of his posts in the past week. That implies that the information he is supplying is incorrect, misleading or lacking vital context. The public should not have to pull the PM up on factual accuracy.
I am extremely sad to say that TalkTV’s last day on-air tomorrow also means my last day at the company. I’ve had the most fantastic time working here and couldn’t have asked for better colleagues to make the 3:30am alarm enjoyable. Thank you so much to everybody involved.
Worth noting that the channel is funded by advertising, NOT the taxpayer. Publicly-owned, commercially run. Still many people unclear who will read Tweets like this and think they’re paying for it, which will misinform their judgement
Why should the taxpayer keep Channel 4? Why do we need a biased news channel and shows in which single men and women pick partners by viewing their genitalia on national telly? We’re also skint, why shouldn’t we sell it? Aptly, I’m minded to say the Tories have lost their balls!
Work News - I’m joining
@TalkTV
this week as their Political Correspondent! It’s going to be (another) huge year in politics and I’m so excited to work alongside my favourite Irishman

and the rest of the brilliant team, bringing you all the madness as it comes…
Not entirely sure why out of my many notepads, I chose a leopard print furry one to take to my interview with Michael Heseltine, but no regrets. Interview watchable next week
@Politics_co_uk
!!
Johnny Mercer MP just told Times Radio that (now suspended) Conservative MP Lucy Allan supporting a Reform Uk candidate to succeed her is “normal” and does not mean the wheels are coming off the Conservative campaign
Some people just don’t take him seriously as a politician any more - from his tv appearance to his regular tiktoks, some say that what he cites as ‘connecting to young people’ actually just crosses a line that politicians need to stay behind. Mixed views on this though!
Losing the whip is often associated with shame and not meant to be seen as a positive (it’s effectively a punishment!) so it’s interesting to see that Hancock has not taken it this way. Instead, he is citing ‘freedom’ - in a similar to way to Andrew Bridgen.
There are 650 MPs. Only 360 cast their votes, which means a significant amount of abstentions. However, having 354 MPs officially agree that you, as a Prime Minister, lied to and purposely misled the house, is still extremely significant in historical terms.
Secondly, after the speech, I asked how he found being an Independent MP. He said ‘liberating. I can do anything now’, and refused to say outright, but implied that he’s not interested in regaining the whip. He’s standing down at the next GE though, so that may be a factor, but..
And on that note, I am clearly VERY MUCH open to work!
Please get in touch with any opportunities. Paper reviews, analysis, features, whatever. And obviously, full- time positions too but that goes without saying!
My DMs are open.
I am extremely sad to say that TalkTV’s last day on-air tomorrow also means my last day at the company. I’ve had the most fantastic time working here and couldn’t have asked for better colleagues to make the 3:30am alarm enjoyable. Thank you so much to everybody involved.
Excited to be joining

Essential to take a scenic photo of my colleagues so everyone knows what we do for a living. It’s not like it’s our only personality trait or anything…

Another by-election in Blackpool South after Scott Benton looses his appeal. Another night of me sitting outside a sports hall posting slightly unhinged tweets pending.
I’ll be outside Downing Street for
@BBCNews
from 9am to 6pm tomorrow!
By all means tune in for the whole thing if you’re that excited about my election hot-takes but otherwise, do watch as and when!
The overall tone of the speech was quite critical of the Cons current direction. Implying that the party was restrictive, and failing to connect to ‘normal’ and younger people. He said they need to banish the ‘Conservative Corbynistas’ who get hung-up on culture wars too.
The fact that we are all collectively shocked that an MP from one party can be polite about an MP from another party speaks volumes about the state of politics and what has become ‘normal’.
Since the last election we've had:
Five Chancellors
Four Foreign Secretaries
Three Prime Ministers
Two Defence Secretaries
But only one Armed Forces Minister.
He has been a rare constant in the turmoil of Government. Totally committed to defence and Labour thanks him for this.
Really disappointed in the amount of news outlets using my video as if it’s theirs with no credit to me or
@Politics_co_uk
. On air & on socials. Extremely poor practice. I should’ve watermarked it, yes, but have some decency/ethics! Ripping off people’s work is not a good look.
Getting a lot of messages about this so just to say, you’re welcome to use/quote it wherever you like!

In light of the encouragement to buy a copy of today’s Sunday Times, I just want to stress that reading an actual newspaper is the best. I do all the time, and encourage everyone to. Something so nice about flicking through the pages and gets you off the screens. Long live print.
I’ll be back in my (not so) old stomping ground, taking you through PMQs with

Helen MacNamara at Covid Inquiry on sexism amongst Cab Office/No 10:
"Women whose job it was to do something were not able to do their jobs properly because they weren't having the space or being treated with respect. It was both striking and awful."
For anyone who envies the glamorous tv life, I just want to let you know that I’ve been sitting outside a closed sports hall in the midlands since an ungodly hour this morning.
A true honour to have been able to watch President Zelensky in his address to Parliament. His speech was - as always- careful, personal and deeply moving. A moment in history.
Anderson is still an MP - he just resigned his post as deputy party chairman. But it is interesting to hear that some MPs feel he is purposely drifting away from the party as a whole and that this is just the beginning
As much as this is true, the major flaw in this argument is that the public’s right to life-saving healthcare is already unfulfilled - a large reason for these strikes in the first place. Staff can’t give patients this access right in current conditions.
PARLIAMENT: Defending the minimum safety legislation, Rishi Sunak says:
"No one denies the unions their freedom to strike, but it is also important to balance that with people's right to have access to life saving healthcare"🚑
I’m going to freelance until I manage to hammer-down a door to full time employment, so you can still catch me doing paper reviews and analysis on various channels and stations etc for the time being!

Happy Valentines Day ❤️❤️💋💋 I’ll be on Times Radio later reviewing the papers, so all you lonely and wistful singletons with nothing better to do this evening can indulge in my radio debut. Any couples doubting their overpriced restaurant reservation, welcome too.

Newly elected somerton & frome Lib Dem MP, Sarah Dyke, appearing on The Guardian’s podcast during the run-up to yesterdays by election. Dyke was rendered unable to answer standard questions about the needs of the community she now represents.
I’m going to be

Michelle Mone is not a ‘former’ member of the Lords. She is still very much a member. She just took Leave Of Absence which allows members to maintain their right to sit, despite being unable to attend for a period of time. She took this leave so she could ‘clear her name’.

It’s far more nuanced than this. It’s not just one thing. Farmers can’t afford to turn their greenhouses on, avian flu is still rife, fuel and transport costs are too high, there’s a shortage of workers, Brexit, climate change. These, plus more, have contributed to empty shelves.
Just asked the same MP about below. He said “Of course he will. Last ditch attempt before he loses his seat at the election. Good luck to him. Suits him better than with us -good riddance”
Just a reminder that this is coming from a fellow Conservative. Factions out in full force

Richard Tice, the leader of the Reform party, has issued an invitation to Brendan Clarke-Smith and Lee Anderson to join Reform.
He tells me: “I can confirm that Lee and Brendan would both pass our strict vetting process.”

Welcome to the Reform UK Battle Bus - Temple Run edition.
We are being garrotted by trees, I’ve got twigs in my hair and there are pensioners on the floor.
I was going to write a series of tweets about what happened in Parliament today, but I actually think all that’s important is that it has hugely highlighted a total gaping chasm between harsh, urgent reality … and Westminster.
This would not be a criminal offence as the outcome of his constituency is not known by anyone and cannot be predicted with prior knowledge. So would be a very different story to that of the election date bets.
Princess Anne has just rocked up to Wellingborough, driving a Land Rover Discovery.
“This town has had more action today than in the past 60 years combined!” says a local.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that because you personally didn’t feel threatened, those who did were ‘unfounded’. There were about 2k protestors there last night, and even if there had been zero, you can understand why MPs would feel anxious about their safety at this time.
I left Parliament at ~7.30pm yesterday (via the Peers' Entrance, to be exact) and didn't see a single protester. So any fears that MPs may understandably have had were unfounded.
Those who were angry that I covered Farage the other day and urged me to cover the Greens more will be pleased to know I’m off to Bristol to do just that. Bristol Central is their top target seat and will see a battle between their leader

Speedy Suella really ought to take that driver awareness course. Or is Dominic Cummings still in need of an eye test? Alternatively, if it’s Rishi, let’s hope he was wearing a seatbelt.
@robert_busch65
For context, I asked everyone who walked past. Lots of others stopped to chat but didn’t want to be in the video, and I’d say the supporters were definitely the majority
Zahawi apparently not resigning. If he’s sacked by the PM after scrutiny from the independent adviser, more questions will arise about Sunak (& family)’s own tax affairs. Starmer says ‘any politician who seeks to avoid races is not fit to be in charge of taxpayer money’.
Wow, done for 2022 - and WHAT a year to have started my career in political journalism and working in the lobby. Very excited for the next one. Merry Christmas all!
Grant Shapps on the Today Programme slates the BBC for not using the word ‘Terrorists’ when describing Hamas.
He claims the BBC don’t seem “particularly interested” in “the Hamas terrorists”.
Mishal Husain asks if he has seen any of the BBC’s coverage:
The SNP are urging Labour (rather than the Conservatives) to back their immediate ceasefire motion. Without backing from the Conservatives, the motion won’t pass, making it meaningless in any sense other than ‘messaging’.
This week, the SNP in Westminster will present a motion urging the Parliament to back an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Starmer & Labour must back it - anything other than an immediate ceasefire will mean the deaths of innocent Palestinians will continue.
@DeeAisha
If you go on the article the time stamp still says 12:53! Think it stays the same as is the time it was originally uploaded not the time a change was made
Matt Hancock thought that HE should decide who lived or died during Covid, rather than a medical professional
That’s according to Baron Stevens (former Chief exec officer of the NHS) who made this claim just now at the Covid inquiry
NEW: Lee Anderson admits to press huddle he was “throwing you lot off the scent” when he formally denied he was planning to join Reform.
A new one for the lexicon.
Asked why he lied he said “that’s politics darling”.
To clarify, we don’t yet know for certain WHAT this bet was on, as seems uncertain how a Labour candidate would have prior intel about the election date.
Rumoured to be on the outcome of his constituency result rather than the date of election, but awaiting confirmation.

Few things on Cameron:
For many, a respected politician who signifies the last moment of sanity before a few years of Conservative upheaval. For others, the architect of austerity and the man responsible for Brexit and the instigator of said upheaval.
