🚨 Just under ten years since I first stepped into City as a postgraduate student, it's now time to finally say goodbye, as this is my last year of teaching here.
🧵
Another year, another fantastic group of students on MA Broadcast Journalism! Keep an eye out for them, we know they’ll keep making us proud! 🎉👏👏👏🤩
@cityjournalism
@sandywarr
@tomcroasdell
And that's a wrap!🥳👏🎉
Well done to all our students on MA Broadcast and MA TV courses at
@cityjournalism
for finishing on such a high!
We will miss you - it's been a real pleasure working with you for the past year! Now, go conquer the world!
An amazing day for
@CityJournalism
at the
@BJTC_UK
awards! Students won 7/7 awards they were nominated for, and a special recognition award! Testament to their hard work during two Covid lockdowns.
I’m grateful and proud to be part of the brilliant team that worked with them!

says he’d wear a mask:
1. Indoors when busy or in close proximity to others
2. when competent authorities ask him to
3. out of common courtesy to others if they feel uncomfortable
That’s the *medical* advice we should follow on masks. Not what Gov’t ministers say.
👏👏🥳 So very chuffed that
@CityJournalism
MA TV graduate Georgia Stewardson has won the Today Programme’s Student Broadcaster of the Year 2019 award! Well done
@GeeStewardson
, much deserved!
10/ But Varoufakis and MeRA25 will be the only left-wing, pro-European opposition that the country will desperately need during Mitsotakis's premiership. Syriza will be unable to fulfil that role, having voted for all the measures that New Democracy will and wants to implement.
The final and biggest thank you goes to our students and graduates.
THANK YOU for trusting us, and for allowing us to play even the smallest part in the building of your future.
We are so proud of what you have achieved and will continue to achieve.
7/ This is actually a big achievement for
#Varoufakis
and MeRA25, given the size of negative press they endured from a very partisan media from 2015 till today, and after being targeted by political opponents from all sides:
Students on campus producing amazing radio programmes, and a strong work-from-home digital team producing fantastic content for our website and social media 👏👏👏
@cityjournalism
No words can describe the immense gratitude I owe Sally Webb, my lecturer, turn-line manager, now lifelong friend.
I hope I was able to channel even an iota of her passion for teaching and true care for our students.
Teaching alongside her has been the privilege of a lifetime.
The fact that you came up with such a case study for a class while walking through a supermarket is proof (not that there was ever any needed) of why you have been such a critical addition to the
@cityjournalism
digital teaching team,
@MattLCapon
.
🧵🚨THREAD ALERT!🚨🧵
Last week, I shared a tweet poking fun at
@marksandspencer
's cheeseburger pasta salad. What I didn't expect was that it would result in write-ups on both local and national news websites.
However, as it's been almost a week, I have a confession...

How are we on the verge of a no deal?
Because the no dealers are willing to do absolutely anything necessary to obtain it. Its opponents aren’t.
Could it be stopped? Sure. Will it? Not unless remainers learn from their foes. My

City Journalism alumni! We miss you and need you!
In the absence of work placements, our students need to find contacts prepared to mentor/assist them.
If you are happy to listen/watch their content and provide feedback etc, DM me!
Fell free to share!

Throughout the year at
@cityjournalism
@MattLCapon
and I have been described as ‘good’ cop and ‘bad’ cop on Digital. The jury is STILL out as to who is who.
So on the last newsday with this year’s cohort, we made it our own.
You're a man. What do you do? Firstly, shut up and don't even think of saying that dreaded phrase.
In the following order: Shut up. Listen. Learn. Reach out. Educate yourself and others. Act. Be a true ally.
Early weak up this morning, to talk all things

on Greek public TV. Can this madness be over so I can reclaim some of my Sunday mornings? Thanks 😂
When I watched
@inheritanceplay
the first time, I thought it was a novice's enthusiasm that got me so excited about it. But after watching this 7hr two-part epic again, I'm certain it wasn't. It's a masterpiece. If you see one play this year, make it this one. 🏳️🌈👏👏

Boris Johnson’s deal might well pass today. But had Theresa May proposed exactly the same thing, word for word, he would have opposed it and so would much of the ERG. It was always about internal power in the Conservative Party. Piece from me.
A week before the national universities
#UCUStrike
, I'm truly fascinated with how bad human resources directors can be at their job of... directing their human resources. Scaremongering and blatant lies in all-staff emails can only harden our stance. Surely they understand this?
These nine years have been extraordinary.
I hope we have served our students right and helped them develop their skills and build the confidence to pursue a career in journalism and, ultimately, achieve their dreams.
.
@sandywarr
I cannot thank you enough. For your friendship, support, work ethic, and initiative in driving a digital-first approach across platforms, even when that meant you had to make changes to our radio teaching.
The MA Broadcast course wouldn't be what it was without you.
Hidden in the Digital News Report 2020 is a secret blueprint for building a successful online news organisation (in Europe). Here's your ten-tweet guide.

Great work from our students at
@cityjournalism
today.
"A City News investigation has revealed that some refuse collection trucks in Tower Hamlets are mixing household waste with recycling."
11/ Greece's problem? There has been a change of government, but not of policy. Mitsotakis has promised tax cuts and a renegotiation of agreed primary surpluses targets. These are unlikely to be agreed with creditors, and he's not prepared to clash with them if required. /ENDS
I'm proud of what we built around our digital teaching on the two
@BJTC_UK
-accredited courses.
During my studies, we ran our own little blog every week.
Now, students manage a fully-fledged multimedia website with liveblogs, and produce content for six social media platforms.
And they're off again! First of nine days of
#WorkFromHome
radio and digital newsdays for our Broadcast students at
@cityjournalism
.
And what a pleasure to have
@KateSullSky
of Sky News with us, offering great insight and tips to the digital team!
Huge pleasure and fun to have you
@kitbradshaw
with us today on our first
#WorkFromHome
digital newsday! I'm sure students are also greatful for the great feedback and tips!
Really enjoyed helping the latest
@CityJournalism
students with their assessed Digital Newsday. Some brilliant work by everyone, despite some technical hiccups with the website – and the fact they’re all working remotely 👏
Thanks for having me
@GeorgeNegas
&
@sandywarr
So lovely to have you back at
@cityjournalism
Josh! Thanks for once again accepting my invite and for the valuable feedback and thoughts for our students!
A wonderful day yesterday as guest editor for MA Broadcast Journalism and Podcasting’s multimedia week. Great catching up with my former lecturers (
@GeorgeNegas
@sandywarr
etc) and getting to meet such a talented bunch of students. Big things ahead for them!
UPDATE: Communication with Mesdar has been re-established and has now been released, while Stena Impero is still being detained by Iran.
@MTHolroyd
and
@NewsAMorgan
bring you the latest.
Brilliant news! Joshua was on the MA Broadcast Journalism course at
@cityjournalism
not three months ago. Now, he will be
@LBC
's Digital Weekend Editor! 👏👏👏
For me, the story isn’t if the upset father is a Labour activist. The story is that
#BorisJohnson
blatantly, and quite possibly instinctively, lied so easily about something so simple: Journos being present at a *No10-organised* press opportunity.
so another year finished
@cityjournalism
MA and MATV and we can't quite find the words to say how much we have loved teaching students who have risen to the challenge with such spirit and creativity - we will watch your careers with great pride

Fantastic work by BBC Africa Eye on the Khartoum massacre of June 3. And very proud to see
@cityjournalism
alumnus
@Bertram_Hill1
involved in the investigation using Open Source Intelligence to verify the footage of this gruesome attack.
THREAD
On June 3, 2019, there was a massacre on the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.
This is the story of that massacre, told through the phone cameras of those who kept filming, even as they came under live fire.
#BBCAfricaEye
4/ Perhaps the biggest achievement is that neo-Nazi Golden Dawn will not be in the new parliament. They got just shy of 3%, the minimum required to gain seats. This might also affect their ongoing trial, as, now former, MPs will not be able to claim parliamentary immunity.
Proud of last year's
@cityjournalism
students, nominated for THREE
@BJTC_UK
awards, in TV news, documentary and podcast. And well done to all finalists!

If I've got this right, if a single grandparent has two or more children and they and their families living nearby, the grandparent will have to pick which side of the family they want to engage with more? Yikes.

6/ Former Finance Minister
@YanisVaroufakis
will also re-enter parliament, as his
@MeRA25_gr
party, the Greek branch of the pan-European
@DiEM_25
movement, will have nine seats in the new parliament.
None of this could've happened without the initial help of
@39_stephs
and the support my latter partner-in-crime of two years, good/bad (delete as applicable) cop
@MattLCapon
.
I'm so grateful to both for their commitment, professionalism and dedication over these years.
And
@JackParkr
from City University
@cityjournalism
takes out the prize for the Derek Dowsett Award for great storytelling and tight packaging. Watch his winning entry here:
8/ New Democracy and others abroad accuse Varoufakis of costing the Greek economy an, unsubstantiated, 80-200bn euros, while Syriza tried to blame him for his negotiating tactics, in an attempt to justify their own u-turn on enforcing more austerity and agreeing another bailout.
I had been contemplating the thought of leaving for a some time, but I just couldn't. I enjoyed it too much.
But with the courses moving on, it’s time I finally did the same thing.
I truly wish the department and the courses the continued success they deserve.
