International film critic, author, broadcaster, journalist specialising in horror, disco & punk, co-director of FrightFest & artistic director of Trieste S+F
Not merchandise, but a very special gift. One of the original Lament Configuration boxes from HELLRAISER given to me by Clive Barker on the last day of filming in 1986.
I am utterly bereft by the news my dear friend Ruggero Deodato has died today. A great loss to Italian genre cinema, and as much as CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST divides people, it was unique, a one of a kind shocker. I will miss him so much.
Dario news: Cinecitta has restored every single Argento movie on film and the retrospective world tour begins in June at New York's Lincoln Center. Other venues and dates to be confirmed.
Rare I feel a movie was created solely for my viewing pleasure, but LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is a Bava, Argento, Cilla, PEEPING TOM, 60s needle drop, slasher, gorgeous fever Dream Babe delight, Thank you
@edgarwright
- Youโre My World! And you gave Diana Rigg a glorious genre swan song
RIP Roger Corman, one of the most important people in genre history, not just for his output as director/producer, but for giving so much A List talent their first chance. I was lucky to meet him on numerous occasions and am so glad I told him how much his work meant to me.
At the end of each film diary year, I did best and worst lists. Here's 1977. Putting EXORCIST II over SUSPIRIA really gave
@KermodeMovie
a laugh last night!
One of my favourite preview theatres, the Fox screening room Soho Square, is now closed because of the Disney takeover. This commemorative photo is the intro to sharing my collection of movie invites from the past 4 decades....
FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA is absolutely fantastic, off the scale epic, astonishingly inventive and the whole Tom Burke section once more rewrites SF action. George Miller rules. Do not listen to anyone saying itโs not as good as FURY ROAD, itโs on a par.
I met Dario Argento 40 years ago this year. To celebrate that important moment in my life & OCCHIALI NERI opening this weekend in Italy, from tomorrow l'll show priceless items from my personal Argento collection and share my memories...
Audiences
@FrightFest
have been watching a broad range of subtitled movies ever since its inception 21 years ago. Op-ed pieces about PARASITE being a game-changer are just paying lazy lip-service as the grass-roots fans of international genre cinema have always been there.
The UK heatwave begins.... and here's an original 1975 beaker from the first release of the granddaddy of summer tent poles... just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water....
One for
@KermodeMovie
- Today in 1974 I was at the London opening of THE EXORCIST at the ABC One, Shaftesbury Avenue. I can still remember the shock waves through the cinema as it unspooled.
GHOST STORIES and A QUIET PLACE are out this week. See both excellent movies to get a complete understanding of where the exciting horror genre is at this precise point in time. Enjoy this rare double bill of quality.
Tonight I was supposed to launch my Dario Argento tour, where I talk about his career & my association with it, to film clubs, universities & social groups. Obviously that has been postponed, but will happen sometime in the future. Let me know if interested.
1) The rare original artwork for the UK quad poster retitling of THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, dated September 1970, given to me by Eagle Films head Barry Jacob.
Today in 1979 I attended the first preview anywhere of the sci-fi horror classic ALIEN at the Odeon Leicester Square. I will never forget the galvanising effect and the realisation that I had witnessed greatness or the stunning audience reaction to the chest-burster scene.
Dario has sold the remake rights to his first 3 films, hereโs the promo poster for the first, which has a totally different story to the classic originalโฆ.
So sad about Piper Laurie's passing. Brilliant in every role (CARRIE especially), she was so kind to me on location with TRAUMA, I spent 10 glorious days with her on a Sitges Jury and she was first to agree to appear in my Argento doc, 'An Eye For Horror'. All respect, forever.
Another special gift: an original Audrey II that featured in the finale of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1986), given to me by ace fx man Lyle Conway. Still one of the best movies I ever covered for CFQ mag.
Ennio Morricone has passed away. My favourite movie composer ever, his music will continue to bring joy. I was lucky to meet him and see his fabulous concerts. A true titan in every way. So very sad...
Great news MARTYRS fans! Pascal Laugier is prepping a new extreme horror. He won't tell me the title beyond it's "One unusual English word" & that it will star someone "Globally famous but not necessarily for acting"! More news when I torture him some more...
Dear
@tom_six
Thank you so much for letting me see your new masterpiece THE ONANIA CLUB, which has now put my eyeballs in lockdown too. I found it shocking, revolting, amusing, depraved and yet another excitingly subversive satire on the horror of humanity. Congratulations xx
Many people know I made my 'film debut' in Norman J. Warren's TERROR, he was a gentlemen then, always remained so, and was an ambassador for the genre at every festival and convention, treating his fans with kindness and consideration. A very sad day.
So
@BBC
,
@FrightFest
is running a massive and successful event at the Cineworld Empire in Leicester Square, how about some coverage away from the obvious music festival stuff?
Just to clarify what Dario Argento exclusively revealed
@FrightFest
last night; his new movie will be shot in Paris, it's a remake of a 1940s Mexican thriller and he won't publicly reveal the title just yet.
Still receiving glowing reports about
@FrightFest

A big week
@FrightFest
, the UK's biggest, best and most beloved brand leader announces its full line up on Thursday July 14, and we know you'll be thrilled by the selection.
Today in 1981 I saw the instant classic creature feature, AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, at a preview at the Curzon Mayfair. I've called John Landis' finest the 2001 of Werewolf movies.
In my 45 years of being a film critic, one preview has always stood out. Today in 1977 I saw STAR WARS at the Dominion, a full 6 months before UK release. The screening was electric, the after party star-studded, and I danced till dawn to Meco's Disco theme hit.
Today in 1980 I saw one of the most notorious exploitation double-bills of all time - ZOMBIE FLESHEATERS & THE TOOLBOX MURDERS - at the Centa Cinema, Leicester Square, now the M&Ms store.
RIP Peter Bogdanovich. I met him at the Sitges Festival, told him how AT LONG LAST LOVE was one of my favourite movies, he just stared at me for a few moments and then asked me to dance the waltz. Which we did.... Thanks for such a great memory.
You asked for it, here it is, the original sticker given to me by Carrie Fisher when she was making the movie, I also have this as a crew T-shirt...โฉ
Today, in 1980, I attended a press show of MOTEL HELL, at the Paramount preview theatre, Wardour Street. In my notes, I remark I was the only person left in the cinema by the end credits.
Five years in the writing, rewriting, watching, rewatching, researching and remembering, my new book DISCOMANIA! is finally finished. To be published 2021 by
@FAB_Press
I guarantee it's unlike anything ever done before.
It's Dario Argento's birthday today, what a legend, and what an ovation he received
@FrightFest
. His present from us? The portrait he absolutely loved taken by
@j_edwards_photo
that he is framing for pride of place in his Rome home.
Today in 1978 I saw a favourite Brian De Palma, THE FURY, at the Century Preview Theatre. It was at this screening I sat behind Amy Irving, didn't know, raved about her performance, and she turned to me to say thanks. Classic!
3 years between the 2 movies but still the same freebie, a bit worse for wear these, but director Tom Holland gave me the first one at the LA press junket in July 1985.
2) I've kept every call sheet from the days I was on location with Dario on all his films. I'm showing this one mainly for the Quote of the Day section.
