Been working on a fun little side project and finally making it public!
Have always thought explainer videos for talking about healthcare topics work well and so took a shot to make my own for the Medicaid Unwinding that’s going on
Link in the next tweet but I hope you enjoy!
Residency is funny because they will let you be the night senior in the ICU and start levo on a patient in shock but then also email you if you decide not to go to a lecture that you don't think you need your own education as an adult in your thirties lol
Just set up my
@readwiseio
to
@obsdmd
sync and created a dataview to help me process my inbox in a more digestible way so that I’m not overwhelmed with a huge list
Wow, this is awesome and I love what I can do with dataview in obsidian
#obsidianmd
lol there was actually an app that had this when i was in med school and we tried it on an oculus and i can confirm i used it for 5 min and then went right back to anki
Education will never be the same.
People are finding some incredible use cases with Apple Vision Pro and spatial computing.
10 wild use cases:
1. Learning how heart works
VBC in real life is an excel doc I get every week in clinic with patients for that week and columns of if their A1C and hypertension are controlled
And pended orders ahead of time for me to collect urine microalbumin/Cr
Just want all of you to know it’s not insane tech lol
So
@AirrAudio
just updated it’s sync to
@readwise
to include transcripts when available.
And then
@readwiseio
sends that to
@RoamResearch
The output is this which is just beautiful! I was waiting for transcripts to sync and this makes everything so much simpler.
Absolutely loving the PDF Highlighter in
@rem_note
It's nice to have the ability to copy the text from highlights but also reference larger chunks of highlights in a simple pin and then turn that chunk into it's own rem to review in flashcards later
I've started following
@jackbutcher
more on YouTube after seeing his incredible designs on Twitter.
Recently came across a video where he walks through his design process with
@david_perell
Some key takeaways👇🏽
There’s definitely a marketplace for health tech companies needing input from doctors who understand how the health system works and connecting them to residents who could use some consulting $$ and who are at the forefront of how work actually gets done in hospitals
Pro Tip: If you’re not using Ctrl + Cmd + Shift + 4 to take screenshots on Mac you’re missing out
Copies directly to clipboard so you don’t have to deal with the file
Lots of keys yes but lots of time saved also yes
I just watched How to Take a Digital Note by
@fortelabs
which was also essentially a preview for BASB. Took some notes on it (ha the irony) and sharing some highlights below in case it is useful to others!
Saw this tip on Twitter a while ago but just made a page in
@RoamResearch
called “” and all the unlinked references are tweets I’ve saved anywhere in my Roam database and it’s so cool to look through.
Try it out!
@mcuban
@costplusdrugs
Hey there resident physician here - one I’ve had issues with for my patients is apixaban for anticoagulation or even enoxaparin as a different kind of anticoagulation
Recently had a patient who has a lung clot and needed it but was pending Medicaid and couldn’t afford it
I still don’t think using language models for diagnosis is the real need. It’s pretty uncommon that we can’t make a diagnosis in the hospital
What I usually need is an answer to a second order question or what a specific specialty may say to my question
Ever since setting up my GTD system in
@RoamResearch
, I've started writing less.
I think there is good reason sometimes to unbundle things, so I think I may go back to Things 3 for tasks. Great app that does that one thing (haha!) really well.
Writing a newsletter in Document Mode in
@RoamResearch
feels so much better.
Can’t believe I haven’t been doing this all along. Also apparently it copies and pastes much nicer
It's sad that more people don't go to resources like PubMed to learn about specific topics.
If you're interested in something, it's likely there is some research out there on it.
However, the incentive structure of PubMed isn't set up to get the knowledge out to the masses.
Spent way too many hours in
@RoamResearch
last night defining workflows and creating smartblocks (thanks
@roamhacker
!)
Landed here so far in terms of a note-taking framework. Daily template is still in the making.
Would love to learn about how others are structuring notes!
A good tweet is made up of four parts:
- compression (make it concise)
- no spam (don't be annoying)
- simplicity (easy to digest for the reader)
- novelty (a new perspective)
On this week's issue of Tools for Growth, I write about how I used
@RoamResearch
to build a personal medical wiki for myself as I studied for my first board exam. Would love for you all to give it a read!
So it's day 4 of using
@obsdmd
and I've gotten a lot of guidance from Roam-to-Obsidian converts/dual users on how to treat the DNP in Obsidian so thought I would write up some of the learnings since it may be helpful to others
#obsidianmd
#roamcult
I need to talk to more doctors in tech - thinking about clinical product or clinical data roles. I think jumping to tech to be a provider isn't as interesting (at least to me) and it would be cool to combine the two
Does this exist? I think yes but hard to find
This is such a great feature for anyone who manages tasks in
@RoamResearch
Every morning I open up [[TODO]] and block reference in tasks from my master list and this will make that way faster + you can add new tasks in as well.
A more task oriented example
I want to reference a block that I know is on the page for [[Near Term Roadmap]]
Shows what previous workflow was, and how it is improved
Learning SQL was one of the best things I’ve done to change the way I think about problems
So simple to learn and has made me a much organized thinker.
Has helped me so much on the wards in the hospital and feel like everyone could benefit from it
2pm UTC is I think the time when the largest number of people on Earth is awake
• 6am in SF
• 9am in NYC
• 11am in Rio
• 2pm in London
• 3pm in Lagos
• 5pm in Moscow
• 6pm in Dubai
• 7.30pm in Mumbai
• 10pm in Singapore & Beijing
• 11pm in Tokyo
• 1am in Sydney
Okay this is just cool
@rem_note
- Upload PDF to source (under the title)
- Make highlights (text or box)
- Copy highlight reference or highlight quote (text) to main page
- Clicking on the reference will open up the part of the PDF where you initially highlighted
🤯🤯🤯
Started using
@roamhacker
's Daily Note popup in Roam42 and it makes jotting down ideas so much faster.
I like to have a section of my Daily Note where I just jot down things that come to mind and was going back to the Daily Note page each time do this. This way is better!
Literally the best way I solidify my thoughts about something is by writing an essay or newsletter about it.
Forces me to get my thoughts out of my head and onto a page but in a way where others have to be able to understand it.
Richard Feynman knew what he was talking about.
I hope there is a
@RoamResearch
feature one day that adds a random node from my graph into the Daily Note so that I can go down a rabbit hole of my own thoughts that I haven’t thought about in a while
@Conaw
#roamcult
Does anyone else remember the school planners in middle school that had the interesting fact in the corner of each page and you would read all of them on the first day you got the planner instead of waiting each week to see a new fact? I miss that.
So far liking the combo of Roam and Notion in
@tana_inc
Only using it for a medical database for things I come across at the hospital and how to manage them on the fly (essentially my own subset of UpToDate) but it is working well
Excited to see how this grows over time
Was at the hospital today and spent 20 min looking for a lab value for a newborn that was in an obscure place in the EMR. All I wanted was universal search to find all instances of said lab value.
I want
@RoamResearch
but for electronic medical records. How hard can it be?
Really enjoyed this episode of
@noverthinking
where
@taimurabdaal
and
@AliAbdaal
discuss
@nabeelqu
’s essay on How to Understand Things. Particularly enjoyed the discussion on constructionism vs instructionism. Feel like this is very evident in medicine
Watching
@cortexfutura
’s intro to
@tana_inc
videos and though I am not as deep in TfT these days it does feel nice to see it making a comeback with a fun new tool
I’m thinking of using
@tana_inc
just for residency right now - would be cool to have quick clinical views for things
Video editing tip of the day I got when I took
@AliAbdaal
’s editing course a while back:
When you’re recording and you mess up, clap after the take so that you see a spike in the audio when editing.
Makes it way faster to find the “good” take you’re looking for
I’m liking the quick swipe down to access Command Palette on
@obsdmd
mobile
Set up some pinned commands per
@maxwschulz
’s advice and added “open todays daily note” to it today
Makes navigating on mobile so much faster
#obsidianmd
Connections are happening!
Seeing the compounding effect of using
@RoamResearch
from board exam study to third year of med school.
I'm able to take stuff from my Review Notes and add new attributes (i.e. "Management") to create a deeper picture of specific diseases
Ok
@mcuban
the
@costplusdrugs
integration into Epic is very good
Love that you can just pick cost plus as the pharmacy and then paste in user email and cost plus handles it all on the backend - well done
Been having fun making my own GPTs
Made one today where I can pass a URL of a health tech company and it gives me back a structured output with a high level summary, industry, pro/con, and sources
Helps when lots of companies have vague websites lol
I've been using
@wirtzdan
's method for managing tasks in Roam and have really been liking it! Have actually stopped using Things 3 which is kind of wild.
It's nice to have everything centrally located within
@RoamResearch
so I don't have to go to multiple apps.
@CaseyNewton
@RoamResearch
Also in case you want to see a use case for
@RoamResearch
or if you leave The Verge for med school:
Here’s how I used it to study for medical school board exams
wanted to test out what building an app would be like since i’ve never built one before
got a small MVP going last night using claude opus in about 2 hours
definitely cool what you can do now so quickly
also ofc it’s an app for vanco dosing lol
best advice i’ve received in medicine so far is that the most important thing is to follow up on any clinical decision you make
it’s ok to be wrong as long as you follow up and change course as you get more info
super relevant in all parts of medicine but especially icu
Achievement unlocked! 100 subs and it feels so good!
Thankful to everyone willing to hear my thoughts each week in your inbox.
And if you haven’t subscribed yet - what are you waiting for!
This was a fantastic read. I didn’t know how resident salaries were tied to DRG payments (also the CMS file that spills all the tea)
@jbcarmody
did you end up writing the part 2 you mentioned at the end? I couldn’t find it but would love to read!
Honestly
@rem_note
should just partner with all of the medical schools in America with enterprise plans for all med students
Once drawing in RemNote becomes a thing - Notability, GoodNotes, and OneNote won't be needed.
@MikeandMattyMD
- should we start sourcing deals!?
alright we have basic “update dose from trough” capability!
right now only supporting troughs close to goal - will add functionality for troughs wildly off goal but that’s a bit more complicated math
still crazy how helpful claude is for this
I’d never actually written down what I wanted to write about, who it’s for, and how often I want to do it.
Felt great building a
#contentthesis
with
@anthilemoon
and the rest of the people in her course today!
I am increasingly interested in preventative care for specific populations
As a South Asian, I’m definitely at higher risk for heart disease and diabetes and factoring that in and how to act on it early is probably super important 30 years from now
Great video by
@MikeandMattyMD
on workflows of using
@GoodNotesApp
with
@rem_note
- now I have to adopt this when I start Peds on Monday!
Might go full Remnote and drop Anki which sounds scary to even say
