Biden on Sunday will become to first U.S. president to speak from the pulpit during regular services at the historic church where King once served as pastor.
Georgia’s Jon Ossoff has been appointed to lead the Senate subcommittee that investigates crime and corruption within the U.S. government and its agencies, plus just about any aspect of federal policy.
But her parents are. I want to make sure the world knows this. Greene made sure her parents got their shots as part of a vulnerable population. She told me so months ago.
Georgia Congresswoman-elect Greene has spent her morning falsely accusing the Biden campaign & Democrats of voter fraud and trying to steal the election. Again, there is NO evidence of wrongdoing. We knew it would take time to count all votes.
Ahead of her panel on the Essence Festival stage, Vice President Harris took photos with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and supporters. She also signed a poster that said, “First but not the last.”
U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff has unveiled legislation that would create new oversight of federal prisons, including routine inspections and an ombudsman to investigate concerns about the treatment of prisoners and staff.
.
@Ossoff
tells the crowd at Warnock’s election night party that regardless of whether he wins tonight or after the runoff he believes his counterpart is headed back to Washington.
The House Rules Committee has signed off on advancing the resolution stripping Greene of her committee assignments to the floor tomorrow. It was a voice vote so no roll call.
This is arguably the biggest political event in Georgia since Obama’s 2018 rally. Remember that in 2020 regular campaigning was generally eschewed by Democrats.
@FRANKSKI
is the DJ.
A bill creating federal protections for same-sex & interracial marriage has reached the 60 votes needed to avoid a filibuster during a procedural vote today. Both Georgia Sens
@ossoff
&
@SenatorWarnock
were in favor. Warnock left the campaign trail to travel to DC for the vote.
Warnock: “The whole world is watching Georgia one more time. And Georgia is getting ready to deliver one more time.” But he told the crowd don’t celebrate yet. Keep voting and encouraging others to vote.
Back to Brown AME, where the service is still underway. (Abrams will bring the keynote today.) Some members of the audience turned their backs as Michael Bloomberg spoke.
I am astounded that, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene speaks to media about her failed motion to vacate, so many GOP members are also here to give interviews criticizing her. They are pissed. They are vocal. “The gloves are off,” one told me.
Last week’s protest where Rep. Beatty was arrested was led by women. Today’s protest was led by men. This is part of increased pressure from activists on Congress to pass voting legislation.
This is a big upset. Handel won the seat 17 months ago following the most expensive congressional race of all time against Jon Ossoff. But the state & nation's attention was elsewhere this year

Vice President Harris gave brief greetings to an enthusiastic Essence Festival crowd. “Enjoy this evening,” she said. “Let us always celebrate the diversity, the depth and the beauty of our culture.”
Standing room only for VP Harris’ Essence Festival talk. Here is a pano of the front of the room. Hundreds more are behind me. Streaming link (may have to click GBEF HQ):
Joe Biden is speaking now. This is neither his first time in Selma nor his first time speaking at this church. Unlike Bloomberg, he is received warmly. Also I should note Alabama is a Super Tuesday state.
The committee is now debuting new witness testimony that confirms details of the angry confrontation between Trump and his security detail when Secret Service agents refused to drive him to the Capitol on Jan. 6
Note. These “vote Warnock” shirts are being publicized by official WNBA accounts. League-wide rebuke of
@KLoeffler
after she took her criticism of BLM protests to a host with ties to white supremacy
I have spoken to
@NilesGAPol
. (He temporarily deactivated his account.) He is OK. But we should ALL remember he is 18 years old. I try to stay even-keeled on here, but right is right. Wrong is wrong. Treating people with respect is not political.
An Athens man convicted of allowing his pool hall to be used as a marijuana distribution point is among the first three people to receive pardons under President Joe Biden.
Warnock joked with Spike Lee using “Do the Right Thing” references, quoted lyrics from “The Message” & reminisced about growing up in Savannah’s Kayton Homes projects before getting to his usual stump speech. Campaigning in your hometown hits different.
.
@RepHankJohnson
is speaking now at a voting rights rally outside the US Supreme Court. Next, he will lead the group, which includes voting activists and members of Black fraternities, inside one of the Senate office buildings.
NEWS: Oprah will be campaigning for Stacey Abrams this Thursday evening ( Oct 20). No details yet about format and whether this will be in person or virtual.
More video from today’s demonstration, where arrests occurred. Black Voters Matter coordinated the protest.
@RepHankJohnson

Good morning from Selma, Ala., where today we commemorate the 55th anniversary of the civil rights walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, aka “Bloody Sunday.” Follow me today as we attend various events culminating with a walk across the bridge.
Warnock tells the crowd they have “unfinished business.” He says the race will be about competence & character, “and when it comes to that the choice cannot be more clear between me and Herschel Walker.” Supporters have new signs that say “One More Time Georgia.”
Biden is expected to deliver a speech outlining his vision for America wrapped in reflections on Martin Luther King Jr., whom the president credits as one of his biggest influences.

@StephenAtHome
, you can't ask a pastor his single favorite verse!
@ReverendWarnock
narrows it down—selects Gospel of John Chapter 1: The light shines in the darkness and the darkness overcometh it not.
Thankful GA's senator is challenging us all to be a part of that light.
U.S. Senate Democrats are floating new election legislation, which they now call the Freedom to Vote Act (replacing the For the People Act). Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock is among the main cosponsors.
Al Sharpton is addressing the crowd now. Biden is in the room (probably speaking after him.) Sharpton get a big reaction with this line: “To our Vice President... I’m talking about Stacey, not you, Joe.”
The libertarian running for Georgia governor, Mr Hazel, is making the case for why third-party/longshot candidates are usually not invited to debates with major party candidates.
Stacey Abrams’ campaign has turned this Atlanta brewery into a HQ for the evening. Over 100 supporters here, texting and calling people to encourage them to vote tomorrow.
I just got the scoop from
@senatorwarnock
about why it took him so long to cast that decisive vote this morning. He flew to Atlanta to catch his daughter’s school holiday concert this morning. “I sat listening to a bunch of 1st and 2nd graders sing ‘Jingle Bells.’”
Good morning from Georgia, where the nation will be watching the primaries unfold. I’m starting out today at
@staceyabrams
press conference and I’m still astounded by the amount of media here in GA.
Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris honored the late Georgia congressman John Lewis during a speech aired during Friday’s March on Washington.
No Georgia Republicans in the House supported the $2,000 stimulus checks. Both issues head to the Senate tomorrow where Loeffler & Perdue will be on the hot seat.
I was the reporter who asked this question after Rep. Greene downplayed the impact of COVID-19 on children & those who aren't obese. I asked if she feels any responsibility to people in Georgia to protect them. She said the responsibility is their own.
Georgia Rep
@AustinScottGA08

Oh and she just took a shot at the media, particularly the AJC, particularly me — for reporting on her stock trading. I would be remiss if I didn’t point out here although she may not have liked our coverage: it was all factual and we ALWAYS made sure to ask for her side.
Stacey Abrams will be featured heavily throughout the day, which I’m sure will fuel more interest into whether she will be on the ballot in November. Presidential candidates Buttigieg, Bloomberg Biden are all planning appearances here.
Rep.
@JamaalBowmanNY
said he came to the park to provide counter programming to what he described as Rep. MTG’s “hateful rhetoric.” He held court for quite awhile and stayed to talk to constituents on other topics.
Some of the folks in this photo are on

’s staff. They were so protective of him. They are like family. They stayed here, surrounding his casket, the longest. It’s like they aren’t ready to walk away.
Once again, Rep. MTGreene has used a motion to adjourn the House to delay a vote on a bill she opposes. Once again, it failed. The House will vote on the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill around noon.
Warnock: “I just want to say thank God for Georgia ... Georgia is better off, the whole nation is better off because of what you did on Jan. 5.” (Flipping Senate & getting a larger relief package because no GOP support was needed.)
Some ~personal news~, as folks on here like to say.... After 12 years in DC and almost four as the AJC’s Washington correspondent, I’m moving to Atlanta next month to take on a new reporting role at the paper 1/

OK. He forced my hand. Here is my profile of "memer of Congress"

Members of Congress are putting on gas masks. Tear gas has been dispensed in the Rotunda. Again, that is just a short walk away from Chambers. (US media do not have gas masks.)
Trump to White House reporters before leaving for Macon: Kemp is “running a great campaign and I think he’ll be a fantastic governor of Georgia.” “He studied for this job for a long time,” said Trump “He will be a great executive.”

The speech is likely to also outline policy themes for the second half of Biden's first term, and he could provide some hints and how he would approach a reelection campaign that is widely expected to launch soon.
Democrat Lucy McBath is declaring victory over Rep. Karen Handel in

I caught up with Sen

after he rushed to DC from his daughter’s graduation in NYC to cast the tie-breaking vote to advance Nancy Abudu’s nomination.
Gas prices across Georgia are falling, at least in part because of a temporary suspension of the state gas tax pushed by GOP leaders. But a similar effort in Washington championed by Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, has gone nowhere.

@repjohnlewis
is on his way to file paperwork to qualify to run for an 18th term in the US House. Despite undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, he is making good on his promise to continue working.
Clarification: Greene’s father was ill and passed away in April of non-COVID reasons (melanoma). So I should have said her parents “were” vaccinated but one has since passed away.
UPDATE: House Democrats have advanced the resolution stripping Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of committees to the House floor. Vote scheduled for Thursday.
Jon
@ossoff
’s new legislative director is one of only five Black people to hold that position among the 100 U.S. Senate offices. Overall, 66% of Ossoff’s top office staff members are people of color.
The biggest cheers of the night this far are for
@SenOssoff
. He went down a list of laws priorities passed by Democrats in Congress, including the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. “Georgia, you did that!”
