The year is 2024. Only 5 academics remain in UK academia. These 5 are constantly agreeing to, then resigning from, external examiner positions. This process alone is at least a 0.5FTE job given the paperwork involved. VCs have just received an above inflation pay rise.

Thanks for your kind words. I started in York as a lecturer 8 years ago. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago. I've been very lucky to be surrounded by supportive colleagues and amazing lab members. They've all made me the academic I am today, so a big thank you to them.

Please for all that is holy can unis trust us with credit cards for conferences. All they need to do is then check we've stuck to the rules after the trip, and if we haven't then fine take away the privilege. Some upfront trust would go a long way though.
