I’m sorry to be a misogynist or whatever but I genuinely am a bit tired of mythology retellings from the female/feminist perspective and I would love to see some innovative takes that do actually work WITH the traditional male heroes and not rally against them
I think it’s pretty insulting to call this genre of books a ‘grift’ when what we’re witnessing is a trend, much like the supernatural romance and teen dystopia novels of the late 00’s-early 10’s. And OP is incorrect regardless since Pandora isn’t a mythology retelling whatsoever!
ALEXANDER was a TERRIBLE PERSON. He was a TYRANT. He betrayed every ideal he ever claimed to stand for. He was a shameless pathological liar who killed millions of people for his own insatiable vanity. He is literally one of the worst people in history.
sorry but ‘Sapphic feminist retelling of the Odyssey by someone who hasn’t read the Odyssey and went on record saying they got their mythology stories from Percy Jackson’ feels like a hate crime against me specifically, it feels so personal
I just don’t understand why some people are so reluctant to accept that rape and kidnapping of women has always been a morally reprehensible thing. Even if we also accept that ancient moral codes were ‘different’ there’s plenty of evidence that it’s not THAT different.
I know The Cyclops (c.1914) by Odilon Redon is a very sensitive and sophisticated piece of art but I find it so hysterically funny, I can’t look at it for too long.
the thing about ‘we can’t say homosexuality in reference to classical antiquity because they didn’t understand the concept’ is that it just doesn’t hold up to logical scrutiny. they also didn’t understand the ‘concept’ of a united country called ‘greece’ yet we use that word-
@agameganon
Are we to pretend you care about morals? You're just upset because you know you're too fat and unattractive for a man like Odysseus to ever desire. You attack what you can't have. Same reason you attack Athenian.
Surprise! My shop is open once again and fully restocked for 2023 🎉
The popular Ionic column gold and silver necklaces and earrings are back in stock, as are the Athenian owl medallions, plus many other beautiful designs inspired by the Classical world.
7 years of hard work has finally brought me to this point. This evening I accepted my unconditional offer to begin my PhD at
@Durham_Classics
this autumn. It’s been a long and difficult journey, and I’m so excited that this marks the beginning of the next chapter of my life.
I really don’t like the whole ‘actually Medusa was turned into a Gorgon by Athena because Athena was protecting her and giving her the power to kill sexual abusers❤️’ take because her bodily transformation into something monstrous is still a violation if not done with consent
My shop is open and ready for orders! I’m early career Classicist who makes jewellery inspired by the ancient world by hand. All items are made to order and high quality. Every day I’m going to highlight an item that I have available in this thread ⭐️
I am slightly worried that without a verified account no one will see my posts about my jewellery so please share while you can! My shop is now OPEN and all items are handmade by me. Every purchase supports me in my research as a Classics PhD ⭐️

I’ve put a lot of thought into it and here is my definitive cast for A Muppet Odyssey:
Statler and Waldorf as Scylla and Carybdis is, I think, my best work yet
That doesn’t mean I think the feminist girlboss mythology tellings shouldn’t exist because there is obviously an audience for them but I do think it would be interesting to see the male heroes return to the front and see what can be done with them
perhaps it does make me a terrible misogynist but I do think that a retelling of Odysseus’ homecoming from the perspective of Eumaeus the enslaved swine-herd has just as much innovative and subversive potential as the retelling from Penelope’s perspective has
to celebrate Twitter polls soon being axed for us hoi polloi here is my way of getting the most use out of the feature in a topical fashion while I still can:
Which Of These Big Names From Classical Antiquity Would Pay For Twitter Blue?

‘Viewing the ancient world with modern standards of morality is annoying’
But viewing rape/kidnap as something that was only seen as immoral in modernity isn’t true! That’s the point! It was still immoral even then! It was immoral in antiquity and it is now!
Insisting Achilles and Patroclus had no intimate relationship because you can’t accept a hero being attracted to his own gender: Not Good
Insisting Achilles and Patroclus MUST have been intimate because you undervalue the grief of losing your friend/fellow warrior: Also Not Good
At the end of last month I was making plans in secret to end my own life. Now I’m still here, not exactly thriving, but still here, which I suppose is an accomplishment. I’m taking small steps towards recovery and I’m trying to be hopeful of what a new month will bring.
If one more person tries to recommend the Percy Jackson books to me, a fully grown adult in my mid-twenties, I will shrink to the size of a bug and bite them on the ankle.
@inviscid_pixels
this is a pretty unhinged way to respond to someone who is a gnc lesbian woman and a survivor of sexual violence but enjoy your outrage points I suppose?
wait until the sender of the message realises that the Athenian tragedians also engaged in the ‘vilification’ of Odysseus and he is far from the hero, neither the protagonist or the morally correct one, in several of the most moving pieces of the golden age of Athenian literature
I receive messages like these all the time, and that’s how I know the house from which these activist academics throw their tiny stones at anons is made of glass — their own students despise them despite their occasion supporters like this Guzman sycophant
I’m so pleased to share that I will be returning to Winchester as a Visiting Lecturer in Classical Studies for the academic year 2021/22. It feels surreal but also perfectly fitting to be returning to

6 years after I initially began as a student.
Emperor Septimus Severus was born in Africa and his son Caracalla is therefore an Emperor of African descent. Emperor Macrinus, a Berber, was born in Algeria, Africa. Emperor Aemilian was also born on an island off Tunisia, Africa. Source me, completed three degrees in Classics.
Rap music is very much Black excellence that has been undervalued and sneered at by white intellectual types for so long that white academics taking that label and retroactively applying it to the Classics of all things has absolutely never sat well with me.

in history, some time between the 9th and 11th of June 323BCE. Prior to his death, he hosted sacrifices and a drinking party where Alexander drank long into the night with his companions. Soon after he developed a fever.
I am a grown adult with a PhD and an Oxbridge teaching job. I come on Twitter to lampoon my teenaged first time students on their written grammar. I do this because I enjoy punching down to feel smarter. I am very cool and funny.
his army mutinied twice and forced his hand to change his plans and his own friends were part of several conspiracies to assassinate him during his short reign, plus he himself murdered at least three of his own good friends from childhood by the way
The bad news is I didn’t sell any Classics inspired jewellery today but the GOOD news is that means I have plenty of gold and silver necklaces and earrings pre-made and ready to be sent off! Every piece is handmade and every sale helps fund my research!
Jason and the Argonauts (1963) was one of my favourite films as a child, and it still is. The colourful statue of Hera is absolutely gorgeous, Nancy Kovack’s Medea is the epitome of glamour, and the fights with Talos and the skeletal Spartoi are the stuff of nightmares!
My shop is open for new orders - I’m a UK based Classicist and I make jewellery/accessories inspired by the ancient world. Here are just some examples - for more to browse and buy check my shop link!

As much as I can’t wait for COVID to be under control and for gatherings to be safe once again, I really hope that doesn’t mean we abandon online conferences and seminar sessions. Hosting things online presents its own challenges, but I’m so grateful for how accessible it is.
Now that I know I’ll be starting my PhD soon it’s crucial to earn as much money as I can! In addition to being an early career Classicist I make by hand and sell Classics inspired jewellery. Buy some beautiful jewellery and support a Classicist? Win-win!
Hi all! With the help of
@TransinClassics
I’ve arranged a Zoom social for trans and nonbinary Classicists, this Saturday. It’s been a heavy week for everyone, and I hope this will be an opportunity to foster a warm, friendly, and supportive environment.
The shop has now reopened! I have listed some new gold pieces and restocked some old styles. My favourite new arrivals include these beautiful matte gold earrings of Alexander and Athena and these gorgeous gold Classics necklaces!
Hate me if you must, but I firmly believe that Oxford and Cambridge should have only ONE team each on University Challenge. It’s University Challenge, not Oxbridge Colleges Challenge.
You can accept that in antiquity they didn’t value bodily autonomy or understand consent in the same way we do and also accept rape has always been wrong. Even if they could get away with it more, even if what they define as ‘rape’ has changed, it’s always been morally wrong.
If I were a supremely successful Classical scholar and much beloved public historian I would simply never bother with Quote-Tweeting private individuals and weaponise my 300,000 followers against those who have literally no power to influence my life. But that’s just me, I guess.
-to describe the general geographical/cultural area because it has a meaning today that we can adapt to the ancient context. same for homosexuality, they may not have understood or enacted identity based sexualities but the word is still useful to us as a relevant descriptor
@HarryWilkinsonn
Are you that dense that you’ve never heard of transferable skills? Do you think everyone who takes Biology becomes a biologist? Media a media man? A good qualification that demonstrates analytical and writing capability is a good qualification regardless of its name.
Reasons why you should choose me as your presenter for an Alexander the Great documentary: I’m 5’0 tall and so I would be permitted to make short jokes about him without it being disrespectful.
Cottagecore in its association with queerness is about a lot more than just the aesthetics of the pastoral; it’s about reclaiming domesticity away from hetero-patriarchal society and living off grid in a self sufficient manner that liberates you from those social constraints.
personally I think it’s fine if you prefer the translations by Fagles or Lattimore or whoever, we’re all moved by words differently, but you don’t have to write a genuinely pitiful attempt at a misogynistic think-piece decrying a new translation as the denigration of the Classics
Officially declined my PhD offer because of financial reasons today and I won’t lie, even though I’ve been putting it off for over a month, it still really hurt.
