TN: Vote NO on 1 (it’s an anti worker law that gives more power to corporations) and YES on 3 (ban slavery in TN!). Vote for
@OdessaKellyTN
or
@Campbell4TN
if they are on your ballot!
Knocked 64 doors in “feels like” 14 degree weather & toes are numb but one person told me no ones ever knocked on her door and asked how she’s doing. People are waiting to be organized!
1. People shouldn’t be arrested for protesting the US-backed genocide of Palestinians.
2. Members of the media shouldn’t be arrested for covering those protests.
Both are now happening in Nashville.
Haven’t said it here yet, but what’s happening at VUMC is absolutely vile, inhumane and dangerous. Trans people deserve lifesaving (and routine) healthcare, self determination & dignity. Folks in those videos have kept countless people alive and are making Vanderbilt better.
Pro stadium folks could not fill their allowed 2 hours of public comments. By my count, a minimum of 30 of their 40 speakers represented a Chamber of Commerce, business, or other entity that's positioned to profit from this deal.
Just got canvassed by a volunteer for
@freddieoconnell
! He said people on the doors are most upset about the stadium deal. Freddie is the only candidate who voted against the deal because he knows we deserved better. I’m so
#ReadyForFreddie
!
"I want you to stay." This resonates w me. Deeply. I have constant grief & joy abt living here. Maybe it's my age (mid30s). Maybe it's bc I've almost left be4. I wasn't born here, but Nashville is home. This is the 1st messaging that I've seen myself in, & I believe it's sincere.
This has been a tough season to be a Nashvillian.
But my message to you is simple: I want you to stay.
I hope you'll watch this, hear our message, and join our movement to reinvest in a Nashville for Nashvillians. via

@brettawithers
hello! There are many reasons I am personally opposed to BL2021-961 (expanded surveillance = expanded risks of abusing the data, limited public input, safety concerns for my neighbors, etc.) Can you explain why you are supporting it?
Just heard a troubling
@hubNashville
radio ad about what to do when someone knocks on your door. Their 3 options: ignore it, have “painful small talk” or hub-it to FILE A COMPLAINT for someone knocking on your door. The assumption & fear mongering that every day contacts are
What I love abt this ad is that it's FULL OF PEOPLE. It really stands out compared to others' that are mainly the one-man show (plus obligatory family members). And that's what's exciting about a
@freddieoconnell
administration. He's built a real coalition across race, age, etc.
Today, you’ll see our 1st ad on TV. Our ad talks about the kind of Nashville we want to build with more child care options, an effective transit system, and more housing that working families can afford. This campaign is built by individual donors like you
Recently heard a KC Tenant Leader share this goal of 10k tenants in the union this year, followed up by "yeah, we have no chill" 😂
No chill = the rigor and discipline needed to take and shift power. So much respect for these folks and how they are building a movement.
10,000 TENANTS STRONG: KC Tenants is building a citywide union with a goal of organizing 10,000 tenants into our union by the end of this year. It’s about taking our city back, and it’s about fighting for our homes.
TENANT AWAKENING: MAY 7 @ 11:30, Armour and Kenwood
New: Latino immigrant kitchen workers and a group of racially diverse women servers walked out at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Brentwood, Tennessee, on Saturday, January 14. They say their employer is serving up of a toxic brew of racism and sexism.
One last day, one last list. Knocking for
@freddieoconnell
has taken me to hundreds of doors through my neighborhood. It’s been great. Let’s send this guy to the mayors office.
Text your forgetful friends and make sure they’ve got a plan to vote tomorrow!
OMG! These affordable units exist bc when the former Park at Hillside community was about to be flipped, tenants formed a union, organized & bargained w Elmington for more than a year to win a 1st right 2 return & 1to1 replacements. Tenants CAN stop displacement when we organize!
This morning, we celebrated the opening of Hillside Flats: 290 new affordable units in District 17. A combo of gov and private developers, negotiated by Hillside residents and with brand-new space for Salama Urban Ministries. A lot of happy tears today.
This is the tenant rights crisis in Nashville. 100s of kids from 89 rent-paying families at Mosaic apts threatened with illegal evictions, bogus lies & intimidation.
It's not a housing crisis. We got housing. They just don't want some ppl living in it. Don't mistake the problem
New uniform, same project. Elect people who will work to improve the quality of life for all people in Nashville AND have the experience and skills to do it. That’s
@quinevanssegall
!
I have ridden
@WeGoTransit
all over Nashville but admittedly never to/from the airport. I get in this afternoon and was checking the schedule and wow 50-minute frequency from BNA to downtown is absurd.
An intergenerational delegation of tenants travelled from Shelbyville to Nashville to visit Elmington’s headquarters today. This is what happened!
tl/dr: we won!
Timeline cleanse. 2 weeks ago I took a secret vacation to Everglades National Park. Few things gives me the joy of walking through new woods, new coasts, new paths. Call me anytime you need someone to go on a walk with 💁🏻♀️
Spent the afternoon talking to Rosebank neighbors about
@freddieoconnell
for mayor. People are ready for Freddie! Here’s some common convos I had on the doors.
Shout out to whoever is running the cameras for
@MNNGov
for making sure viewers at home could see
@quinevanssegall
’s white boarding about how we’re getting scammed by this taser proposal
101K+ votes were cast in Thursday’s
#MetroNashville
Election - resulting in a runoff between Freddie O'Connell & Alice Rolli (Sept. 14). O'Connell performed strongest in East & downtown. Rolli, in Joelton, Goodlettsville, & Belle Meade.
At one of my favorite free events of the year, the Southern Festival of Books! About to hear
@joelebert29
and
@schelzig
discuss their new book Welcome to Capitol Hill: 50 Years of Scandal in TN Politics
Tomorrow is the last day of early voting in Nashville. If you’re undecided, ask questions. I’ll share resources & my own experiences of observing metro business for several years. And if you want to know who I voted for, it’s
@freddieoconnell
for Mayor &
@angienashville
for VM.
It’s saddening to see such vitriol over the idea of more housing like the very house I moved into 2 years ago, where I’ll likely live for several more years.
I’ve got more to learn about these bills, but seems like many people arrogantly foreclose on the idea for other reasons.
Me and thousands of others are so very lucky to be represented by Senator
@CharlaneOliver
! She so spoke powerfully tonight about upgrading the playbook with a clear eyed analysis about what is needed for justice work during these times.
After a 58 mile one way commute for my previous job, it’s sooo nice to bike 2 miles to my new office! And even nicer with some car lane closures this weekend 🤟🏼
I want to know what y’all think. What keeps ppl from participating & showing up for local politics like we’ve seen people show up for state politics the last two weeks? Not everything is the same, but we have some similar elements, including
I got to support and witness two tenants in rural Tennessee stand up to their landlord this past week, and get what they demanded.
Building power is a decision. Using power builds power🔥
Music will never sound good again after experiencing Chaka Khan, Brandi Carlile and a dozen other women at this amazing show put together by Allison Russell 😍
#newportfolkfest
A council committee will be meeting to vote on a stadium that the state so badly wants at the same time the state may vote to abolish OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. What if those CMs chose to show up to help defend our elected officials instead of letting things carry on as normal???
🚨🚨CALLING FOLKS TO THE TN CAPITOL TODAY AT 5PM🚨🚨
We've heard that Jones, Johnson & Pearson could be expelled tonight during the House floor session.
PLEASE SHOW UP!
WE CANNOT LET THEM EXPEL OUR LEADERS.
Many thanks to everyone who reached out before/after the MHRC (
@1City4AllPeople
) meeting last week. I’m going to unpack the full Title VI Fact Finding Report regarding discrimination claims against the Arts Commission/Metro Legal in the last year's grants🧵
CM Nash just tried telling someone the stadium deal includes something about living wages. I asked where, and he said CM Hurts amendment. No it doesn’t (below)! So he threw his hands up and said well it’s too late.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE IF SAY NO! We can and must do better.
Yes! Been saying this too. I am absolutely sure
@freddieoconnell
will do things I disagree with (literally every elected official will at some point), but I know he’ll look me/us in the eye & talk about it. 🧵
A fun aspect of
@freddieoconnell
‘s campaign is that many of his loudest advocates for mayor will be the same people loudly holding him accountable once he is in office. (Myself included)
He knows this. We know this. The accountability is what makes the thing work.
I’m so happy to see the energy, beliefs and values that’ve been loud and strong at the grassroots level for months & years win at the ballot box. Grateful to be a small part of it & gratitude to those that have worked for so long to get to today. Here’s to 4 years!
Accompanied a 56 y.o. woman to her 1st shelbyville city council meeting tonight. Her reflection after:
“I can’t believe they kept debating if the Chamber of Commerce should get a storage shed ~or~ inside closet, all while their are ppl going thru homelessness in our community!”
Folks it’s time to order some hot hand warmers to keep in your car and bag. These things can be life and limb saving for folks who live outside as the weather drops.
I am no
@startleseasily
but my row has asked for tweets… I’m only doing pre-budget public comment! We are starting off strong with a song and a short story… which goes into an announcement about the Food Waste Prevention Summit!
Trust organizations. People closest to the pain are closest to the solutions.
But it’s the norm that experiences & knowledge from the ppl are disregarded & belittled. To ask people to share their traumas then say meh is disgusting and shameful.
✨Starting my new job tomorrow as a
@BCLP8
Organizer! ✨
We're a tenant basebuilding group in Shelbyville TN, organizing for eviction defense, tenant unions & pro-tenant policies. Read about our work here, "A Year of Avoiding Eviction in Tennessee."
Said in a mtg last week: The stadium does not house ppl. It does not feed ppl bc it does not pay ppl well. It does not educate, it does not provide better healthcare. You can argue 11 football games can provide mental health in the form of tailgating, but that produces a hangover
My neighbors in my hometown are having a dispute. One put a sign “YOUR A ASSHOLE” up on his fence. So the other neighbor put a sign up to block it.
🙃🙃🙃 Merry Christmas 🙃🙃🙃
For every teary eyed testimony a new organizer is born. Our job as organizers is to channel folks’ despair & rage into collective action and power. It’s not your fault, there is no shame & we got each other’s back. See photo in thread.
Families of a Dickerson Pike trailer park just north of downtown Nashville say they are being forced out of their homes to make room for the new Oracle development. They claim they were given 60 days or less to move. Adults and even children cried out to Metro Council for help.
Some people told us we shouldn’t plan a forum that’s after early voting already began. Truth is we know a lot of people are undecided and these conversations and forums are 💯 more real now that it’s crunch time.
Shout out to
@khalilekulona
for taking the reigns as the moderator at today's
@OpenTableNash
/
@NashvilleRenter
forum and didn't let the candidates get away with surface level canned responses. If every forum were run this way Nashville would be a better city for it.
🏘️So my mom recently got into a subsidized apt in Massachusetts (8 month wait). Rent is calculated for 30% of her income but she can BRING MEDICAL BILLS to the office to readjust monthly rent based on those expenses 🤯🤯🤯
Made a list of where I’ve lived in Nashville over the years and realized that 4 of my 6 homes have been attached to other homes. And I’ve loved every one of them 🫶🏼
Construction worker died Saturday working on Vanderbilt's FutureVU residential project on West End. Vandy hasn't issued a statement but workers have concerning stories abt the worksite. If u r part of the Vandy network, here's an ask from
@WorkersDignity
:
I just watched the Council At Large forum put on by NOAH and we’ve got a few good options. We for sure need to make sure
@DelishiaForNash
finishes in that top vote-getter spot again!!
It’s been a joy to be a small part of a people-ful and powerful campaign like
@freddieoconnell
’s, bringing people together from all corners of Nashville. You can be part of it over the next 5 weeks too! If you’re ready for Freddie, join us:
@mollymcdeath
This what I want 2 see! But
@DelishiaForNash
's Y stadium vote was only so she could call for reconsideration; which would bring it back for another vote. The VMayor fumbled the process & it didn't work. Someone should explain this better than me, but I can find the link later
Met a tenant today whose property manager will ONLY communicate through Snapchat, where messages disappear. The things I hear after a day on the doors are maybe unbelievable to people who’ve never experienced them. Out here in the world of landlords gone wild 😩😠😫
We've been through a lot. Even during this campaign, we've been through a lot.
But we're still here. Let's stay. Together.
In a city that's safer, more affordable, and makes us all proud.
I'd love to earn your vote. Hope to see you at the polls tomorrow.
I refrained from angry tweeting about this vote at 11pm last night after I got home from a *tenant rights meeting* and watched the discussion & Shulman's tie breaking vote. I continue to be sincerely confused and disappointed about these votes, because
I watched this last night & even in 90 second answers
@quinevanssegall
's expertise & its relevance to Metro comes through loud & clear. If you like
@freddieoconnell
's wonky knowledge of how to do things, u'll like Quin, too. Worth a watch if you're still unsure about the A-L race
The solidarity we’re building in Nashville is strong. Teachers standing with low wage workers fighting against wage theft in MNPS. Workers now stand with teachers demanding they get fair pay and fully funded schools. ❤️🧡💛💚💙
