Check out this press conference that launched the
@IPCC_CH
Synthesis report exactly a week ago. I was a part of it, along with five other scientists and the Chair of IPCC. The SG of the UN delivered the opening remarks. Ever so grateful to have been a part of this epic journey.

India's COVID crisis is not because we are a "poor" developing country with no money to spare. It is because we chose to spend money on building temples, statues and grand Parliament buildings, instead of putting much smaller sums needed to vaccinate everyone. Hate got us here.

Once in longish meeting everyone said a cup of tea would be nice and looked at me kind of expectantly. I dutifully got up, went to the tea room, got myself a cup of tea and came back and said that there's lot of hot water and tea bags for everyone in the tea room 🤣🤣
This is the new normal. Schools closed due to

I work with people like these who are trying to
#adapt
to
#ClimateChange
at local level. However, to expect that they can solve problems they didn’t create without the rich stopping their unsustainable consumption and emissions is a lie. Every article needs to have that caveat.
In Kenya, conservationist Lanoi Mitikani is working together with Maasai women to counter the effects of climate change.
They dig half-moon trenches into farmland, or ‘water bunds’ to restore drought-ravaged land. Maasai conservationist Lanoi Meitiekini explains how it works.
@franwritescopy
@AliFensome
@PayGapApp
What you guys did was brilliant. The best thing I have seen in a long time. Any chance of adding race to the mix, especially when companies boast about diversity in their organisations and continue to pay lower wages to people of color?
6. I see they have interspersed their article with quotes from other scientists from Global South and I suspect, like me, they had said more interesting and significant things. Diversity is not a photo op, diversity is reflection of opinion that is diverse.
I have seen calls for naming the
#LossandDamageFunds
as
#HuqFund
in memory of Prof
@SaleemulHuq
. It is a great idea. Also, "huq" means rights or dues in Urdu, making it an apt name, as indeed compensation for losses and damages is due to those who have not contributed to CC.
My viewpoint
@Nature
. I say 1. A large no. of people experience CC though
#water
2. Water is key to
#adaptation
and
#mitigation
, but often ignored 3. Marginal areas and people bear the brunt of CC 4. Equity & justice must be at heart of solutions.

"Excellence" is a code word for "merit" I am assuming, and we all know how merit is constructed -- through social capital, connections and years and years of privilege. Also, what is the basis of the assumption that more diverse academia compromises on "excellence"?
4. Saying that there should be moratorium on further climate science research ignores huge knowledge gaps that exists in places like Africa. Also that our societal pact as scientists is not with the governments alone. We have a moral obligation to do science for a broader cause.
I find it problematic when scientists say
#transformative
#change
is needed without spelling out what those changes look like. Seen this with
#adaptation
scholars and now seeing it with
#foodsystems
folks. Unless those changes are spelled out, it all sounds like jargon. Anyone?
5. Yet, the only quote the reporter ascribes to me is the one I say in the passing and was the least important part of that hour long conversation. But then, I suppose, how can a scientist based in the Global South be quoted on something that actually makes sense, huh?
I am at the Water Security and Climate Change Conference in Bangkok, where I presented our

How much cleaner are the clean energy technologies such as renewables, electric cars, heat pumps, and hydrogen compared to the dominant technologies?
Significantly. Here’s a neat summary graph from

While my NY Times interview was a prime exhibit of the powerful in the Global North tokenizing Global South voices, on the positive side, I did get some lovely photos clicked by a very talented photographer called Rebecca Conway. Here are a few of those.

Why aren't the high emitters reducing their emissions already? How do you adapt to such extreme heat? You simply can't. Mitigation is the best adaptation.

My husband and I just danced to the tune of “khela hobe”. I am a terrible dancer (he’s great though), and there’s a pandemic raging outside. Yet, dancing to celebrate the defeat of the party which has plunged us into this darkness seemed the right thing to do.

My first tweet wearing my new hat of Director, Climate Change Impact Platform of the

If you thought that's a nice blue carpet, think again. It's actually a crocodile infested river, and you can't step on it without being eaten alive. The only way to travel is to hop on from sofa to sofa.
The media is interviewing scientists on

2. It publishes a piece on a paper that if not exactly “supernova of stupid”, is still very inconsequential. Possibly the only reason it got published is because it is written by senior white male academics. I can't imagine any journal publishing anything like this by me.
1/8. My quick take on
#agrifood
systems related outcomes from
@COP27P
1. The term food systems has been meticulously avoided in
#Koronovia
because of sensitivities around demand side measures such as diets by developed countries, and mitigation concerns by developing countries
Reviewed a paper for one of the top journals today. I was appalled to see that all the authors were from GN on an empirical paper from a GS country. They had missed most of the context and ended up using sophisticated tools to answer a trivial & non-policy relevant question.
1/2. My father passed away yesterday. He was 85. He had led a frugal life. At first, it was a compulsion. He had lost his father as a young boy and struggled to make ends meet. He continued to live a simple life even when he could afford to live more lavishly.
I was invited for a talk at the Indian Meteorological Department today. IMD was set up in

To those who say that our children have less ability to withstand heat than we did (as this person says in Hindi), let me present the IPCC SYR SPM 1. Our children have inherited a much warmer world, thanks to our past actions. Our present actions will determine future warming.
I got an invitation to attend an all-male panel. I politely pointed out that

Just a quick tweet to say that do not assume that people’s research portfolio reflects their actual values. Someone publishing on equity and fairness may not implement those in their dealing with others, or someone working on gender may have patriarchal views. Imp to remember.
I wrote in response: "For far too long, researchers from the Global North have conducted such "helicopter" research in Global South and published in prestigious journals like yours. IMHO, this extractive research practice needs to be discouraged. " Now back to work.
Travelling on a train from

Another gentle reminder: Pass on interview requests to appropriate colleagues if you don’t have expertise in that topic. Nothing is worse than uninformed takes on issues when there could be informed ones. Also trust me, media requests will keep coming your way nonetheless.
Was in a meeting in

Gentle reminder:
Good use of my tax money = evacuating stranded Indian students in a war zone.
Bad use of my tax money = Full page paid advert of imagined achievements of leaders who have been elected to govern but are doing PR stunts instead.

The virus we worked so hard to avoid finally got us. It got us even though we haven't stepped out of our home and no one visited us in the last 12 days and before that, whenever we went out, we used N95. But then COVID is spreading like wildfire in my city. Mild symptoms so far.
The ongoing
#heatwave
in
#Kolkata
is upending children's education & daily lives. With access to thermal comfort, my children & my father have still fallen sick. The condition is beyond imagination for those living in informal settlements. Yet, all of this is being normalised.👇🏾
🌡️ The heatwave sweeping across Asia has forced schools in India to shut.
With our children already paying a terrible price for climate change, we must act to protect their future, urges IPCC scientist

1/4. One of my insights while working on the IPCC report is how difficult it is to convey the truth that excessive consumption, fuelled by fossil fuel-led growth where consumerist lifestyles are celebrated has brought us to our present climate crisis.
Because that’s how patriarchy works. Same way as racism works, even in science. If you are white, you get to write global reports. If brown or black, you only write on your region. One colleague, when told I am leading a IPCC chapter on water, asked if it was South Asia chapter!
Why are successful male athletes always told in interviews that they inspire children all over Australia, but successful female athletes only inspire young girls? Do those interviewing not understand women can inspire young boys too?
I have a new job offer. I get to work at my daughters office, get $12,000 salary and I just need to write 9 chapters in 9 years. Offer expires in 10 years. Job offer letter👇🏼. It is far too attractive an offer to let go, sorry current employer 😂😂
Next time someone introduces me as Miss Mukherji, I will request my 8yo daughters to get on the podium to speak. They are the real Miss Mukherji’s. It will be a win win. My girls want to accompany me wherever I go, and whoever wants Miss Mukherji as a speaker will get two of them

Real conversation with my about to be 4 year old daughter:
Maya scribbling furiously in my notebook.
Me: What are you doing?
Maya: I am writing a report.
Me: And what report is that?
Maya: It’s the IPCC report.
Oh my! Now, we have two IPCC scientists at home. Ain’t I proud?
My friend

With Tushaar Shah @ his farewell party. He was my first and best boss. It’s because of him that I became a water researcher. He helped shape the way so
many of us think about water now. The water sector in India is indeed hugely enriched because of his contributions.

My parents got their

vaccines today. It did take over 3 hours, there were a lots of elderly people in queue & the hospital did their best. Glad that India had built up its vaccine manufacturing capacity and manufactures 70% of world’s vaccine.
Yesterday was my husband’s birthday. He turned 50! He is the kindest and the gentlest man I know and am super lucky to have been with him for the last 21 years. In the midst of reading through a 110 page zero draft, I also managed to cook (with some help) things he loves to eat.
If you are an Indian, and if there is one thing you can read today, read this 👇🏼 It’s a response to the much shared article by Andy Mukherjee, which I had found self indulgent musings of an entitled India. This is the real thing, in contrast.

Genuine question: Why are countries like the UK stopping their scientist from appearing alongside Russian ones on scientific panels when they did no such thing with US ones when US pulled out of Paris Agreement? Isn’t killing the planet just as heinous as wars that kill people?
Extreme heat is a policy blindspot compared to hazards like droughts & floods. High heat with humidity is a sure killer. A lot more needs to happen in this space. Also relevant for agri-food systems as farmers and ag labourers are highly exposed

This was on display during breakfast at my hotel in
