This is absolutely insane, and shows Rory's view of himself as a sensible moderate is nothing more than a posture with no grounding in the facts of the issues he's dealing with. 🧵 A thread. 🧵

In 2022, 0.6% of the UK's population had their background in asylum. Rory is proposing that in a single year, we would double the proportion of the population that has their background in asylum.

Peak asylum applicants, EVER, was in 2002 with 103081 people. Rory is suggesting that the UK accept 3.5x as many people than have applied in any given year. Minimum asylum applications post-2000 was in 2010 with 22644 - Rory is suggesting we take ~15x that number!

The EDL is defunct. This is yet another response from the British state to draw attention away from the central tragedy - to something else which is unacceptable - much like the focus on 'how MPs are treated on social media' after the murder of Sir David Amess.

Moreover, much of the asylum post-1990 has been driven by the ease of reaching the UK, and not by geopolitical conflicts. When we left the EU and the Dublin Regulations, we saw waves of asylum applications from Albanians - despite no humanitarian crisis breaking out in Albania.

Asylum is also an issue which is totally dependent on geopolitical conflicts. There are times of war, with many refugees, and times of peace with fewer refugees. It makes no sense to have a quota of acceptance from a humanitarian perspective.

The reason asylum applications went down post-2000's was because the New Labour government was stricter, not softer, on asylum - rejecting roughly 80% of applicants, restricting access to legal aid, and even creating detention centres to remove people quickly.

Ultimately, there has to be a reckoning with our international obligations. The 1951 Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol came about before the EU, Channel Tunnel, or Schengen Areas existed. The only sensible proposal is to review whether these commitments make sense in 2024.

Mass illegal migration turns high-trust societies into low-trust ones. It turns coherent societies into incoherent ones. You can’t just address the backlash to that. You have to address the cause. Unless our leaders do that this will get infinitely worse.

@AryaSayne I don't know if it is or isn't feasible for most to live in a detached house. Regardless, I want to live in a detached house and I'm willing to work to pay for it. What houses others aspire to is neither here nor there.

@severeengineer I just find it so strange that nothing replaced Flash even in terms of interactive video content. The whole medium oozed with creativity. Strong Bad email was stuffed with Easter eggs you could click on, etc. There has to be a market there.

Very happy to promote my newest venture - an online magazine called Point A! A lot of this will be focused on stats and research, but also a lot of engaging video content and resources aimed at politicos! You can follow it all at @point_a_mag !

Will Starmer solve asylum? Yes, if he listens to the lessons of New Labour. Our first article 'Labour Has Already Solved Asylum' focuses on what Point A aims to be: Independent data analysis to rethink policy and narratives around politics.

Has Britain ever actually exercised it's so-called 'soft power'? It's just one of those immaterial things we miser up and never expend for domestic gains, like our 'international standing'.

After two weeks of hacking away at it - it's not worth it lmao. Trying to debug your specific hardware drivers and then match that up with whatever DE you have is fun from a hobbyist perspective, but a roadblock for actually getting anything done. Bill Gates wins

Love this cat comes by every few days and lets himself in through the back door, runs around, checks out the art, and then leaves through the front door

As of tomorrow my 2024 predictions will have all come true, here's some new riskier predictions for the rest of the year: - Immigration on average by the end of the year will be lower than Conservative peak. - Reform get 3-10 seats - Biden stays as nominee, loses election.

Peter's defence of not voting for a long time was 'if you walk into a shop and see nothing you like, then you walk out'. Extending the metaphor, he's now saying that purchasing Frosties is a purchase of Coco Pops.

A vote for Reform actually *is* a vote for Labour.
