On 8/30/2019 I spent the day riding my bike around NYC and recording videos of idling trucks. I recorded 16 videos. 2 were rejected. 14 summonses were issued. 1 was dismissed (BS). COVID-delayed hearings were in late 2020 and early 2021. I collected $1,187.50 for that 1 day.
hi
@ConEdison
does this magnet serve any purpose aside from avoiding speeding, red light or bus camera tickets?
Ashland Pl between Willoughby St and DeKalb Ave.
Hi
@Verizon
Very interesting that your vehicle with license plate # 43247JY has collected 203 violations but only one in 2023:
I came upon it on Smith Street in Brooklyn with no front or rear license plate. Maybe that's why? 1/7
hi
@MTA
why is your contractor allowed to deface his license plate? And why would he have a PA plate?
(He was also illegally idling for over 3 minutes and has been reported, fyi)
Helped out this guy from New Hampshire who somehow got a leaf stuck on both his front and rear license plate. Amazing coincidence.

Hi
@Verizon
I just spotted one of your trucks with a taped over license plate. How do I claim my one month free FIOS reward?
@HowsMyDrivingNY

Another thing I’ll add is that the reason the anti-idling bill passed was because NYPD was not willing to enforce. The same needs to happen with
#intro2159
#passintro2159
which would similarly allow citizens to report illegal parking that NYPD refuses to address.
Hi
@Verizon
why do your technicians keep covering or obscuring their license plates? What is your policy on stealing from the city of NY?
@HowsMyDrivingNY
ny:14476MB
@NYCTSubway
Thank you. The first vehicle was reported to you with the same piece of tape two weeks ago. This is a pretty serious offense for a city employee - was nobody informed two weeks ago? What happened? Perhaps you should escalate this to the supervisor’s supervisor for allowing this.
Hi
@amazon
one of your trucks was (1) illegally dispatched into Dumbo Brooklyn this afternoon (
@illegal53NYC
) where it (2) ripped the mirror off a parked car and (3) just drove off. Oh and (4) that license plate is forged - that’s not an 8, it’s a 0.
Can you please explain?
@alex_fermin_
@placardabuse
“what are you gonna do about it” truly is the NYPD’s mantra. And they’re absolutely right. They are untouchable and unshameable. They will face no consequence for anything they do.
That’s just so far. One hearing is still set for 10/5. I don’t attend these or have to do anything. Four others have defaulted and if they’re ever paid, I get $250 for each.
I don’t know if I could get 16 videos every day, but 8-10 is probably realistic. They have to be 4 minutes (2 min. in school zones). In terms of submissions, I got to a point where it took me about 20 minutes to review, process and submit, but there was definetly a learning curve
During a lunch hour walk from my office to Barnes & Noble in Midtown on 7/16/2019 I recorded 5 videos. 2 defaulted and have yet to be paid. The others paid and I collected $262.50 so far. Not bad for a lunch break.
Mayor Eric Adams says that city businesses should require patrons to unmask as a condition of entry in order to deter robberies, by ensuring people are recognizable on surveillance cameras.
@theoneyouread
@ConEdison
1) Con Edison is a company, not a person, 2) I didn’t touch the car - only touched a magnet and a plate that’s property of the NY DMV
hi
@ConEdison
I fixed another one of your license plates. Hope you have good use for all the money you save by illegally evading speed cameras all over NYC. This was at 5th Ave & Park Pl, Brooklyn.
Hi

@HowsMyDrivingNY

In total I have made over $10,000 from 163 submissions, with more money coming my way and a potential of over $10k due to me in defaults (which unless the city tries to collect, I’m not likely to receive - but definitely a small chunk of it).
Here’s just the front of a long 🐘 line of idling ghost trucks. A regular occurrence on Hamilton Ave in Brooklyn. None of these trucks have legible rear license plates, and only on a few have front plates that aren’t mangled. The kicker? They’re all
@NYC_DOT
trucks.
This guy removed his truck’s license plate for some
#nycidling
today
If not for the
#nycidling
law there would be zero consequence, thanks to DEP accepting plateless complaints from civilians like you!
This is in
@NYPD84Pct
where plate shenanigans are unenforced (aka ALLOWED)
@TimmyShea
@MTA
It’s to avoid red light and speed camera tickets and my guess is that if it’s unreadable, it’s just discarded and nobody tries to figure out who or what it might be.
Who's worried about congestion pricing? Certainly not the (mostly) NJ-based dump truck industry that serves NYC. Check out this 🐘 line of dump trucks on Fulton St in Downtown Brooklyn today for some tips! 7 trucks, guess how many are defaced!
On 8/14/2019 I recorded 10 videos. 2 rejected, 1 dismissed, 1 hearing still left (10/26/21). 1 defaulted and still hasn’t paid (and may never). The other 5 did pay and I collected $437.50.

Whatever the unintended consequences might be, it would be a huge improvement from the lawless status quo that all the agencies (especially NYPD) prefer.
This
@illegal53NYC
won’t get a ticket for occupying the Schermerhorn St bike lane because
@NYPD84Pct
has no interest in enforcing such laws. But thanks to citizen enforcement of another law that the NYPD paid no mind (
#nycidling
) BLACK EAGLE TRANSP. will likely get a $350 summons
On 9/23/2019 it looks like I spent another day doing this and recorded 12 videos. 1 rejected, 1 dismissed, 3 defaulted/unpaid. 1 defaulted and paid. In total I got $950 for the day. I also caught a matinee of Rambo: Last Blood at the Regal E-Walk. Horrible movie, ruined my day.
Intro 1260, introduced yesterday by

But how does that change anything if nobody is willing to enforce it? 7/7

I have tried to tell so many people about this program but NOBODY is ever interested. I always sound like I’ve got some kind of pyramid scheme going.
To be fair, it’s not very intuitive. Lots of little rules and quirks. Big learning curve.
Hi
@NYPD84Pct
please arrest this man and his partner in crime for criminal mischief. That sponge is worth hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars to the driver of that vehicle. These perps need to go to jail.

Additionally, why is this always focused on bike lanes? Why is that the headline? Let’s talk about sidewalks (Hello ADA!) & bus lanes (hundreds of thousands of (often lower income) riders suffer major delays every single day because NYPD has zero interest in enforcing these laws)
@ConEdison
The frequency with which I spot obscured, bent or defaced plates on
@ConEdison
vehicles has increased sharply in Brooklyn in recent months. It’s out of control, and you clearly aren’t doing anything about it. The individuals who do this to your fleet are thieves.
On 9/5/2019 I recorded 10 videos. All were issued summonses and “I” (or the DEP, or the City of New York) won all of them. 5 are in default and unpaid. For the other 5 I collected $437.50.
I think those are the only full/near-full days I spent doing this. Then I got a new job and mostly stopped. I took Friday 9/24 and Monday 9/28 2020 off from work and recorded 23 videos. 3 were rejected, 2 dismissed, 6 defaulted/unpaid. I’ve received $1206.25 so far.
I flagged a nearby traffic enforcement agent, but she offered them a courtesy. Really, a COURTESY? Just send a completely plate-free truck on its merry way? 5/7
My buddy and I pleaded with her and she agreed to write a ticket. Red Hoodie Manager got belligerent with me. Frankly, the TEA should have called for back-up and had the truck towed away and the driver arrested. Instead, her first instinct was to just offer a courtesy. 🤷♂️ 6/7

Yeah. It’s remarkable that this person is caught doing this several times and other than having to tape up new leaves, he will face no consequence.

The last videos I recorded and submitted were in January 2021 (been plenty busy with my job and often don’t feel like stopping when I see a truck idling)
Thanks to
@NYPD84Pct
allowing it, this guy won’t get in trouble for stealing tolls and doesn’t have to worry so much about camera tickets, occasionally paying a pathetic $25 for covering his plate. Only for his
#nycidling
today will he face any meaningful consequence ($350).
@CMRestler
WTF Lincoln, New Xcell and Sam’s are now using the Old Fulton sidewalk and bike lane on SATURDAYS. This was previously just a weekend theft. Hundreds of tourists pass here. How much of a discount do city employees get here that this is acceptable? CC

alert - starting 2/13, the NYC DEP will require the download and use of the third party app Timestamp Camera Enterprise in order to submit any idling complaints.
The app is free to use with ads, or you can pay to upgrade.
This is a really bad idea. Imagine being banned from submitting 311 reports because NYPD brands you a "CHRONIC REPORTER". This is essentially what
@NYCWater
is trying to do here.
#nycidling
In the bizarro world of NYC politics, CM Julie Menin
@JulieMenin
has a draft LL that would allow DEP
@NYCWater
to create a "code of conduct" for filing Idling Complaints (including "decorous" behavior) and refuse to accept complaints from anyone deemed in violation. WTF????
I think a huge problem with the NYPD is that they just don't respect the community that they serve.
Yesterday, a couple officers spent the day sitting in an SUV chucking pistachio shells out the window.
It's a minor crime but shows that they just don't care about us.
Did you know? You or your company could face a $350 fine for leaving your truck's engine running in NYC.
Unless you work at

Amazing that
@illegal53NYC
trucks still somehow just end up on our smallest streets, without a spotter. Seriously
@CMRestler
@NYPD84Pct
why do these companies/dispatchers just get to continue to operate like this? They should be fined massive $$$ and have these vehicles seized.
.
@LincolnRestler
I reported this illegally idling
@Brinks
truck in this very spot 2 1/2 hours ago. It is still there now. Still blocking all traffic on Jay St. This ridiculous and disruptive security theater really needs to stop.
Don’t believe everything you read. Powering signs or lights or “traffic control devices” is not a valid (or legal) reason to leave a truck engine running. Don’t let signage like this fool you - grab your phone and report the
#nycidling
anyway.
@ourbikelanenyc
@MTA
They don’t have to pay tolls anyway. I think this is to avoid red light and speeding camera warnings (since I guess they don’t have to pay tickets anyway)
fair to note that
@casey
doesn’t point out why int. 501 is needed: the NYPD practically REFUSES to ticket vehicles illegally parked in bike lanes, sidewalks, etc. This isn’t a way for the city to make money, it’s a way to circumvent the NYPD’s unwillingness to do their job.

I think we have reached the point where the NY State Division of Tourism might as well just ADVERTISE that if you really need someone dead, to just bring them to NYC and hit them with your car.
Queens DA Melinda Katz's office has decided not to prosecute the driver who fatally ran over Xing Long Lin, who was working as a delivery driver in Astoria, in April. The DA's office concluded their investigation last week. Story to come. Recap here.
