I hope no legislator who votes for this sham effort to protect the worst policy decision in NYS in ages ever, ever has the chutzpah to call themselves a climate leader. I know what climate leadership looks like. This is the opposite.
Shameful. Congestion pricing is not just about the money (though where are we to believe $1B is coming from exactly?!) but about reducing car traffic, speeding up buses, and improving air quality for us all. This is a betrayal of the public.
Great to run into old friend

NYC data demonstrates that camera-based enforcement does change driver behavior and increase safety, while new research demonstrates that police stops do not.

Very pleased to release the final version of our report outlining how the Adams Administration, the new City Council, and other NYC electeds have the opportunity to use technology to improve the lives of New Yorkers and the efficiency of city government.
The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute’s Urban Tech Hub released the final Rebooting NYC report today, which proposes new and existing urban tech solutions to some of New York City’s biggest challenges.

@GovKathyHochul
thank you! NYS’s micromanagement of NYC, especially on issues relating to traffic, is completely unnecessary. Amazing to have a leader who recognizes that strength is not always about keeping control.
Why does the state legislature have to weigh on whether NYC can put speed cameras in its school zones, asks Gov. Hochul at a City & State interview this morning.
Mayor de Blasio and his DOT have for months been pushing to have the cameras on 24/7
Thanks to
@NYDailyNews
for running my op-Ed w/ a key recommendation from
@cornell_tech
’s Rebooting NYC report: that using tech to enforce traffic violations can make our streets safer.
OPINION | NYC's streets are a mess, and everybody knows it.
Asking the police to conduct more traffic stops isn’t the answer and chasing a speeding car through city streets is dangerous.
The answer is automated enforcement,

Honored to be invited by our next comptroller,

We have a lot to do to build a city (and a country) that can tackle the extraordinary set of challenges facing us in ways that lift up ALL of our communities.
So we're getting right to work. Today I’m proud to announce our transition committee.

Had a great visit with
@NYCWater
’s Manhattan Repair team this morning. Given our size, we’re among the best in the US for having few water main breaks — but when a break happens, this team shows up fast, no matter the time or weather, and gets the water flowing again.
What
@SenatorBiaggi
and the NYS legislature need to do about this is to allow all municipalities to do unlimited automated enforcement of traffic violations. The state leg has been the problem here, not the City.
Following
@NewYorkStateAG
demand to remove NYPD role in traffic stops,
@SenatorBiaggi

Compare to what this study found, showing that
@NYC_DOT
's speed cameras lead to a 71% decline in speeding and a 16% reduction in crash-related injuries where they are installed.
Two days before Thanksgiving, my younger brother, Andrew Aggarwala, was hit and killed by a driver while walking his dog in his neighborhood in Vernon, CT, near Hartford. The driver drove off. 1/
The streets of NYC are getting even more dangerous — cars are speeding without traffic, ignoring lights, not expecting pedestrians. When will we actually do this smart idea? And can we use emergency measures to install camera enforcement?
@NYC_DOT
@NYCMayor
@bradlander
The weather is getting nicer and New Yorkers will need to get outside for exercise and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. To allow that while self-isolating, we will be closing many streets to cars. Our goal is a car free street within 4 blocks of every New Yorker.
When we launched PlaNYC in 2007, it marked an unprecedented local effort to fight climate change.

I'm pleased to share our newly-released draft report, Rebooting NYC: An Urban Tech Agenda for the Next Administration. It outlines practical steps for the next Mayor, Council, and other electeds to take to harness tech to improve NYC.
@cornelltech
This bike-auto tech, backed by automakers, is much like when packaged food companies supported recycling: create a complicated solution to a problem they caused, as a distraction from the simple changes that would solve the problem but might force them to change their products.
@Costa4NY

The idea that platforms are too narrow for platform doors ignores the fact that the edge of the platform without such doors is unusable space -- no one does or should stand within 18" of the edge of an open platform.

This would be a bad idea. And I say this as a member of a Community Board. DOT should establish citywide standards and enforce them consistently. CBs should be empowered to push DOT on enforcement on specific offenders -- but not to hold up or veto installations.
Community boards say if they can’t kill outdoor dining, they would like to review who gets to have permits for outdoor dining and what individual structures will look like. Dept. of Transportation officials have been resistant to conceding any such power.

The DEP has been conducting a Muffler Noise Pilot Program, which includes the use of a roadside sound meter and camera to capture evidence of vehicles emitting noise in violation of New York State’s Vehicle and Traffic Law and the City’s Noise Code.
This is why our
@cornell_tech
draft study, Rebooting New York, recommended a much broader transition to camera-based enforcement for all traffic violations in NYC.

and can deny Fed funding to projects that do not include sufficient and safe ped and bike access. We also need a national effort to link sidewalks and trails. 9/
At every level of govt, we need to take this seriously. This starts with the Biden Admin, which can direct NHTSA to include ped safety in its new car crashworthiness ratings; 8/

Even more, we must change the culture that treats “accidents” as okay and considers reckless driving a right. Andrew’s death got attention because the driver fled. Too often, unsafe driving is excused and defended. 10/
A benefit of nighttime subway closures is that they can be CLEAN. 24/7 service is not a panacea; fast, flexible nightbus services could allow the subways to work better over the long term.

And the fact is that camera based enforcement — if cameras are equally distributed around the city — is unbiased, unlike human enforcement which only targets a small number of violators and relies on judgement as to whom to stop.
Automated enforcement can also go beyond school zones — it’s not just kids who get killed by speeding cars, and kids don’t only cross streets near schools.
An important article — we need to do a better job of helping store owners under (and track) the real potential impacts of bike lanes and other traffic interventions. Also need to be willing to follow up and make changes if the upside doesn’t pan out. Thanks
@DavidZipper

And if you knew Andrew, we are collecting stories about him, and tributes to him, for his kids to have in the future. We all miss him very, very much. End/
When will you finally call for the resignation of
@NYCMayor
and

? How many attempts do they get? Is there any way that you think a reform process, or even a full investigation, can take place under these two failures? Hold them accountable.

I’ve worked on urban mobility for many years and have long been concerned about ped safety. Although I worry every time my kids cross a street here in NYC, I never expected to be so personally affected by this terrible trend. It is devastating. 7/
Unfortunately, Andrew’s death is not a rare case. US pedestrian fatalities are up 40% over the last 12 years. A pedestrian dies somewhere in the US every ~90 minutes. In CT in November alone, 7 pedestrians and 1 cyclist died. 6/
