It's EU election weekend! The far right is set to do well in these elections, and since I have written a bit the topic, I thought I'd do a thread summarizing some of the key points I make in my research on the far right and Europe. 1/
Four years, 96,000 words and a few trees later, I can finally start thinking seriously about leaving the UK and opening my own cevapi joint in Bosnia. After the viva, that is.
Le Pen is trending, so I suppose I might as well add my two cents on why she seems to be doing better this time than in 2017🧵. The first thing helping her is, paradoxically, the presence of Zemmour. Early on, there were concerns that this would simply 'split' the far right vote.
Can’t think of a better way to start the last week of term than getting this in the post. Teaching last year was challenging, but I am thankful to the students who made it such an enjoyable experience. I will now be filing this in my folder ‘proof I kinda know what I am doing.’
I promised professional news & here it is. Excited to announce that after 6 years at
@LSEEI
, as of next week I’ll be joining
@UniofExeter

Braving all Italian superstition about Friday 17 to share some professional news: next month, I'll be joining
@CardiffPolitics
as Lecturer in Politics! Looking forward to meeting new colleagues and adding Welsh to the list of languages I've attempted to learn.
Today is the end of my LSE era. I joined
@LSEEI
as MSc student in 2013, & have since occupied various roles, from executive officer to PhD to Fellow. It's been a wonderful professional home, but I'm ready for the next one. So long, London (School of Economics), and helô Cardiff.

Delighted to receive this teaching award. Teaching is one of the things that kept me going throughout the PhD and the pandemic, so I'm pleased to see I wasn't the only one enjoying the classes.

The far right is often seen as synonymous with Euroscepticism. But what visions of Europe does it offer in place of the status quo? Brilliant new post by

Have you always wondered what Jean-Marie Le Pen was saying about the EU in 1984? Need to know how an almost forgotten Italian neo-fascist party thought about Europe? Look no further. My thesis is now available online, get it before the embargo
New article with
@DrLiseHerman
out and open access! In the article, we investigate how political challengers articulate new political divides in European political party systems and with what implications for representative democracy.
After a sleepless night, at least I woke up to some good news: my article 'What do they talk about when they talk about Europe? Euro-ambivalence in far right ideology' has finally been assigned an issue! Here's the article (and 50 free e-prints)
How did far-right parties go from the margins to the mainstream and did Europe have anything to do with it? 🇪🇺💭
We sat down with Dr

With one year to go until the next French presidential election, I wrote this little piece reflecting on Marine Le Pen's first ten years as leader of the Rassemblement National. Thanks to
@_PiAP
for publishing it.
Just over 10 years ago Marine Le Pen became leader of (what was then) the French Front National.
In "10 Years of Marine Le Pen – When gaining a lot may not be enough"

165 years after a Scottish artist left Scotland for the US, his great great great etc grand daughter becomes a British citizen. Now bring on the next snap election. Once I’ve had time to register to vote, that is.
It is 2019, the planet is burning and yet we are still required to submit hard copy, single sided PhD theses. I can get the hard copy part but the single sided thing befuddles me.
It’s a wrap!After 18 months, two published/accepted articles, a book (which you can already ask your library to preorder-hint hint: ) & more work in preparation, my time working with
@rpbellamy1
and Sandra Kröger at
@exeterpolitics
is coming to an end
When asked about what I research, the short ansswer is 'the conception of Europe in far right parties'. In this blog post for
@euvisions
, I try to condense it in about 1000 words.
Instead, Le Pen has benefitted from having a more extreme competitor because he has facilitated her task of appearing ‘moderate’. She's been at this 'de-demonisation' strategy for years now (I've written about it here: ), but the appearance of someone who
Back in London with what is basically an entire suitcase of food. I’ve always wondered - what do other migrants (or expats if you’re being fancy) bring from home (if anything)?
I didn't win the prize, but I'm happy to see that the paper I presented at last year's
@ECPR
joint sessions was nominated for the Rudolf Wildenmann Prize.
2020 wasn’t all that bad for me (became a Dr, got a postdoc, published two articles) but I still welcomed the arrival of 2021 with all the sequins I could find. May it be at least an alright year.
A friend, a senior political scientist, now faces constant paper rejections after moving from a top Western EU university to a second-best one in a post-communist CEE country. Editors of top journals, please reflect on how you might be contributing to Western hegemony in science

After several months of doing only research, it is with some relief that I am back to teaching Policy-making in the European Union at
@LSEEI
. Still working at Exeter, but it's very nice to have students again.
Sad to be leaving Exeter,but delighted to be going back to
@LSEEI
as a Fellow in European Politics.I’ll be teaching the course I enjoyed the most as an MSc student & which persuaded me that a PhD would be a cool thing to do.Let's see how many students I can transform into doctors
I leave Innsbruck with a suitcase full of Bretzels and the sleep deprivation of a successful conference (and a 6am train). Already looking forward to

Yesterday, Macron attacked both ‘extremes’ of the political system - the RN & LFI. In an article published a few months ago (, OA),
@DrLiseHerman
& I considered whether Macron’s attempts at rebuilding a new centre-extreme political cleavage was a good idea.
🚨 New publication! ☃️

Just finished teaching my last class in Policy-making in the EU at
@LSEEI
. It was an unusually eventful term, but the amazing students I had made it so much easier. Also, as a teacher, I feel that this piece of feedback is a strong personal achievement.
I have no hot takes on the French elections besides admitting that my predictions from about a month ago were very, very wrong. All I can say is French politics will remain worth following for the foreseeable future.
Leaving Florence and ready for the next adventure: an 18 hour bus (rock n roll) to Dresden. I’ll be visiting
@tudresden_de
for a month. Looking forward to being in Continental Europe for a little longer.
Since I know everyone is busy and may not have the time to read a full article, I wrote a blog post to summarize the contents of my piece “Europe as Ideological Resource”. You'll find the full article here Short version: 1/9
There is no better way to end holidays than by going to my favourite place: L’Asinara. Formally a prison island, it is now a national park. It is also where my mother grew up and grandparents lived for 30 years. Anyone looking for sea, albino donkeys & ruins - this is the place.
On my way to my first day of work in Cardiff. Train manager announces 'we're not moving because it appears there may have been a landslide in front of us'. The drama never stops on UK railways.
Presenting on morning of the last day was always going to be a tough sell, but we had a good turnout for our panel ‘the far right and the EU: perspectives, implications and reactions.’ Finishing

on a high!
Really enjoyed presenting at
@ForumMIDEM
. Video to follow shortly, so if you couldn't make it but are interested in the presentation watch this space. In the meanwhile, here is a photo of me being very Italian in my approach to explaining things with hands.

On my way to Lyon for this year's
#CES2024
conference. I'll be presenting some very work in progress on 'Ideologising Europe and Europeanising Ideology: Political Party Ideologies and The European Union'. Prime 9am on Thursday slot. What a time to be going to France.
Getting ready to leave for
@eustudies
conference in Denver. Looking forward to presenting on such a great panel (and very excited to take a few days off work to explore the area around Denver)
I know what I’ll be reading later this afternoon. Special issue includes my article ‘Europe as ideological resource’, which I am pleased to report, is already cited in a Wikipedia page. The true marker of stardom.
@simonjhix
6 seems very low but I can’t say I enjoyed Sciences Po’s 20 hours a week as a UG. It’s nearly impossible to do any kind of independent work with that kind of teaching load. I really valued the amount of time I had for that in the UK, especially at MSc level.
I don’t care if there are only two people in this house, it is Easter and I am spending it cooking for six. Bread with raisins and Sardinian formaggelle ready. Cannelloni and a full chicken in the oven.
Looking for your post-lunch
