I spent the last few months researching every player signed to a Two-Way deal since the 2017-18 NBA season. I used advanced stats from NBA regular season data, guaranteed contract $ and playoff minutes as metrics to determine success. Here's what I found:

A common misconception in scouting is that the raw projects are the prospects that have the higher upside when in reality the "high floor" prospects are the ones that actually have the more realistic upside (i.e. Desmond Bane, Haliburton, Franz)

@JonesOnTheNBA Yup. They took high upside projects because they wanted stars to build around *after* Steph, not complementary guys for the current era. Everything since has been a lesson in the dangers of hubris

Lively's college evaluation only reiterates the importance of scouting context. Context is everything. Calf injury in 22-23 preseason had him playing from behind physically. Was sick with the Flu and lost 15 pounds last year. Duke lacked a playmaker who could feed him easy looks.

Keying in on Charlotte transfer Brice Williams + Keisei Tominaga at Nebraska vs Rutgers tonight. Williams, 6'7 wing, hit 60% true shooting last year on a versatile diet of perimeter shots. 19.6% assist rate this year at Nebraska. Tominaga's arguably the best 3pt shooter in D1.

2nd game of my Philly doubleheader. Prioritizing Drexel’s senior Big from England, Amari Williams, who will likely be named CAA Defensive Player of the Year for a third time in a row this season. European roots are reflected by his passing ability (has an 18% assist rate)

Shekinah Munanga is an interesting prospect. Solid NBA frame, but needs to polish his offensive skills.

As someone who is fully immersed in the Draft world it is admittedly difficult not to overreact based on how rookies are playing early on. We are human and want to correct our mistakes (at least that's my justification for creating takeaways from the last class)

Back on the in-person scouting grind after a few weeks off during the holidays. Truly a pleasure to watch Marquette’s offense led by arguably the best passing big in this Draft, Oso Ighodaro, and one of the toughest, cliche “winner, dog in him” 2024 Draft prospects Tyler Kolek.

Seeing a lot of frustration/discussion online about players returning to school despite being a likely 2nd round pick. Just because you are graded as a Two Way deal player pre-NBA doesn't mean you are going to stay on your Two Way deal throughout the entire year as a rookie.

IMG vs Montverde coming up in a bit. Too many characters in a tweet to name every potential pro prospect in this one. Cade Cunningham is the top player in this star studded matchup.

Will be in Providence for the next few days at the National Prep School Invitational. 2022 NBA draft-eligible Leonard Miller is the headliner here. The Canadian big wing seems to be gaining steam towards entering this draft. Several NBA scouts were in the building.

I thought Jevon Carter really helped himself Day 1. He measured well with a 4% body fat. That is crazy. In the scrimmages he was super aggressive defensively, and showed he was a solid shooter and passer. A leader I would want on my team.

Genuinely curious. As Draft evaluators, should we tweak how we evaluate the NBA Draft with this emphasis on rule changes from the NBA on giving more leeway to defenses? Should physicality hold more of precedent for perimeter prospects?

Scoring is way down in the NBA. A big reason? Referees have subtly swallowed their whistle on just about everything. Shooting fouls, non-shooting fouls, techs, Def 3 seconds, ... all down significantly. More on that trend for paid subscribers:

Over a dozen NBA scouts at the Barclays for Notre Dame vs Oklahoma St + Auburn vs St Bonaventure Carey Booth is one of the headliner prospects. The son of Denver Nuggets GM, Calvin Booth, is shooting 35.7% from 3pt range on nearly 5 attempts a game at 6’10”. Turned 18 in July

Coming off an AAC DPOY and AAC-First Team campaign, junior forward Yaxel Lendeborg is announcing he's returning to UAB for his final collegiate season. JUCO product averaged 13.8 PPG, 10.6 REBs, and 2.1 ASTs per game this year. Next step for Yaxel is providing more 3pt spacing.

Thought Alize Johnson was interesting. Solid passer, good body control, finished well, defend multiple positions with size. Shot is a little awkward but it works.

Caught up with Cameron Tyson after his workout in Long Island. Discussed his experience playing at Seattle where his brother was on the coaching staff. Cam turned down high major D1 interest after his Houston tenure to play at Seattle. Plus, players he models his game after.

Devin Carter’s a clear breakout prospect in the 2024 Draft. All-around stats speak for themselves: 20% AST rate, over 2.5 STL and BLK %, over 8 REBs a game, plus gets to the FT line a healthy amount. But it’s his drastic 3pt improvement that’s key. Up to 6.6 attempts on 37%.

Nice matchup here at the RAC. Rutgers needs a win here versus Maryland to feel better about their tournament hopes. Have some gripes about Jalen Smith, especially defensively where the effort needs to be turned up a notch. But have to be optimistic about shooting improvements.

Enjoyed chatting potential Knicks draft targets with Mike. Think several of these guys are in the conversation at 23 (if they keep it) or if they slip to the late second/undrafted where the Knicks could potentially grab them.

Talked to @SKPearlman and @_borisberic about who Knicks could take with their last 2 picks. Then a trade. Some of those guys could still go at No. 23. Here's a scouting report on Isaiah Stewart, Theo Maledon, Malachi Flynn, Robert Woodard, & Xavier Tillman

Bryant’s Earl Timberlake has had an admirable reinvention arc. Consensus top 50 HS recruit as a guard. Played at Miami and Memphis. Has totally embraced being an undersized switch everything ‘5’ averaging 14-8.9-4.4 per game. Tracked him having 11 potential assists tonight.

Out here at @PatLawless_ ’s Northeast Fall Invitational. Great event filled with talented hoopers from the tri-state area. Jameel Brown has impressed. Improved his skill set since I last saw him in June. Way more aggressive scoring the ball. Basketball IQ stands out on both ends.

Surrounding Wemby with role players with connective passing traits, ++ rebounding, the physicality to play in a playoff environment and the versatility to defend multiple positions is good business. The bones of a long time NBA rotation player are here.

Harrison Ingram to the San Antonio Spurs is a dream fit. Ingram is super versatile. Has played so many different roles throughout his college career. Type of guy who should earn minutes right away next to Victor Wembanyama.
