@elle91
There’s an apartment down the street from me where the resident cat loves to hang out on the window sill. It’s at eye level, so they’ve put a sign with his name and all sorts of info in the window so pedestrians can greet him. I smile every time.
To the people responsing to this by asking how others evacuated without their pets:
Take that love of your pets, assume those folks who had to leave theirs behind feel similarly, and be angry that they were put in a situation so dire to have no choice in the first place.
Reading interviews with people in East Palestine, Ohio where the train derailed is so heartbreaking and insane. People are like "all my pets died" but then they're being told to move back into their houses.
@JReinerMD
It’s frankly embarrassing being on an elite university campus that took so much credit for setting the gold standard early in the pandemic, and is now doing NOTHING. Universities need to step up and lead here. Otherwise, WHAT’S THE POINT?
🧵↕️
🦠 Post-Thanksgiving, college campuses will be an absolute mess 🦠
▪️A huge % of these students have already had Covid at least once, increasing their risks enormously.
▪️All precautions that were in place—which would ALSO HELP WITH FLU & RSV—have already been dismantled.
@JReinerMD
I can’t think of a single more impactful thing that colleges and universities can do to impact the course of the pandemic than to bring back masks NOW. We can’t expect gov’t leadership or k-12 schools to take seriously if RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES, MD and DVM programs, etc. aren’t.
Happy Holidays from my COVID-free house to yours. Fandelier

Please make sure we are not conflating farmers & farmworkers here 🙏
Many farmers *choose* not to go to the doctor for a multitude of stereotypical reasons; many farmworkers *CANNOT* go to the doctor because they may lack health insurance coverage or citizenship documentation.

100000% same. My very happy, small beagle came into my life just weeks before the pandemic, and it has been a game-changer. We visit everyone from the retired folks to the kids and their babysitters.
Marissa is Anabel’s favorite:
@Randall87454048
When do we start to consider whether or not we can even assess the changes Covid has had on our students’ collective cognitive function when it has very likely ALSO impacted the cognitive function of teachers themselves?
@Soylent_Spring
I empathize with all of this. I do want to push back on one small thing, however:
✨ It is not too late to start masking ✨
Ofc it won’t prevent cases that are already occurring, but it is still possible to cut transmission by wearing a mask tomorrow; even if you didn’t today.
If universities *actually* cared about accessibility we’d be overhauling ventilation systems and requiring masks so faculty can take fewer risks when removing their own.
Found out the other day that I can’t mask in the classroom due to needing to keep my mouth visible for accessibility needs.
This is tough, I want to be accessible for my students but I’m very nervous about being in a large classroom unmasked.
Not sure what to do here.
I’ve now held SIX hours of office hours for students’ first big assignment (due Thursday) and I only had ONE student show up.
I have candy.
I have healthy snacks, too.
I can promise a puppy visit with planning.
AM I REALLY THAT SCARY!?!?!

So I just texted my conservative friend who watches Fox News & listens to Joe Rogan, how he shouldn’t eat raw eggs🥚 because of avian flu risk. His response below—
Apparently going to Harvard & West Point didn’t stop him from being Joe Rogan- & Fox News- brainwashed.
Honestly?
Simply existing as an immunocompromised person in an academic department that studies the social construction of science and technology right now is just devastating.
Has anyone out there actually had a conversation with their liberal & supposedly "left" leaning friends as to why they've decided to drop all covid precautions recently? What did they say?
When your NSF grant gets recommended for funding, but it’s a pandemic and your celebration options are limited, you bake some things and drink some wine (with your dog, of course, because she’s basically a co-PI) 🥂✨
When a university president can invite Ann Coulter to campus & watch as she taunts an undocumented faculty member, OK an upcoming visit by Ben Shapiro, & threaten the deportation of a pro-Palestinian grad worker without due process, Cornell is neither progressive nor “neutral.”
Update:
Thank you all so much for the support. So far I am yet to receive the final confirmation of my withdrawal, which I was told would be yesterday or today. In addition, I have been informed by the university that no change will be made to my visa status and my F1 visa

Not to mention the part where the most privileged kids have already been paying people to write/help write their college essays.
That this new tech is a big concern for admissions is kinda funny to me?

In the kindest way possible I urge you to consider the privilege it takes for you to write something so condescendingly ableist and classist — and laugh off pushback. If you believe extra sleep is a waste, I’m very worried you aren’t listening to a good number of your patients.
“You’re the best dog in the whole world,” says my 80 year old landlord while rubbing The Beagle’s ears.
Me: “It’s her 5th birthday!”
Landlord to Anabel: “Wow, you’re 35!?”
I now know why I’m in such despair: She’s now “older” than me…

During my sophomore year at Cornell, my biology lab instructor personally mocked me and my work on his Facebook account.
I found out through a friend of a friend, and was so gutted that I quietly dropped the course after weeks of solid work.
He joked about that online, too.

I’m not in business of defending businesses, but…
A good crisis comm response might be to share some Tweets popping up w/ time stamped photos of sign from pre-Covid to show this is genuine. Then find fun way to update the sign/pro medical masks!

I needed something out of the garage. My Dad has a collection of old stuff, including cool ag industry marketing signs from years and years ago. I found this DuPont one next to the truck.

If Judge Cannon *actually* believed this she would have made this decision MONTHS ago. The political ramifications of this are alarming, and she is well aware of the timing.
Alright, Merrick Garland. It is time to find your backbone and step the f*** up and do your job.

’s perspective would be if her child was old enough to be in school — and even with a vaccine and mask themselves, was in a classroom/lunchroom without mask mandates, ventilation, testing, or others w/o vaccines returning 5d into infection?
▪️Like clockwork, virus incubation time aligns terribly with Cornell’s final exam period, which will begin 8 days after students return from Thanksgiving.
And you know what we’ve learned since the disastrous Fall 2021 exam period?
Nothing.
It seems like I unintentionally kicked a nasty hive of bitter white men today.
I can’t believe I’m wasting my empathy on them, but I honestly feel bad...

My retired cornell research beagle came w/ the name “Sally.” She is definitely not a “Sally” (+ we already have one in the family)!
I chose “Anabel,” which has a VERY subtle resonance with Cornell. My neighbor’s kids’ pronounciation stuck w/ most of us, though:
“Bananabel” 🎀
This photo captures the precise, most adorable moment that Anabel’s 6 year-old neighbor friend opened her front door. The other 150 photos from our first snowy walk of the season feature a

▪️Wait, I lied. We have learned something: That if we don’t test widely, we can ignore that students are sick and expect them to perform beautifully on their final exams under “normal” conditions.
And then we send them back home for their parents to deal with…
I’m sitting here laughing (crying) as I recall how, during this week in February 2020, Cornell Athletics leadership scolded me for discussing “coronavirus” on Twitter.
I was coaching the equestrian team & our barn had a case of coronavirus— which they wanted to keep quiet 🦠🐴
Oh my goodness, are those MASKS? At a CONFERENCE? I want to cry, it’s so beautiful.
The willful exclusion of so many people from science & academia right now simply because people won’t mask is gutting. It’s reached a point where I’m not sure our absence is even noted anymore.

It’s accommodation letter season, so I’m also here to remind you that not all students find advocates in student disability services offices, and never get letters for the accommodations they need in the first place.
Trust your students. You’re allowed to be flexible.
It's accommodation letter season, so I'm here to remind you that you are REQUIRED to provide students the accommodations they're officially entitled to, and that you are ALLOWED to provide even more accommodations and flexibility!
When I adopted Anabel in Feb 2020 I spent most of my time at home adjusting her to non-research life. COVID quickly made this our “normal,” though last week I started going back to campus.
FOR THE FIRST TIME my happy, wiggly puppy just greeted me at the door 🥹♥️

“Use an air purifier!” everyone says, without one hint of irony, after denying requests for air purifiers over the past 3 years.
There’s a big difference between the ability to SEE and FEEL and SMELL air pollution, while viruses remain invisible.

Agreed. But I think we also need to be careful shaming people who do get sick because at some point it’s a pandemic and there’s only so much one can do. Even if they’re smart about it.
I’ve spent the entire weekend fighting with The Beagle: Somehow she found A PIZZA !?!?! in a bush at the end of the street and refuses to accept that it’s not for her.
She’s constantly asking to go outside & will only go towards 🍕. She thinks that being cute will distract me.
✨ HAPPY LIFE UPDATE ✨
I knew I’d “know” when it was the right time to get another dog, but I didn’t expect such a perfect situation to present itself so soon.
Introducing “Anabel,” a 1.5 year old newly retired research puppy I just cannot wait to love and spoil. 🐶❤️

I spent the past several hours bragging like a proud mom b/c of how well this creature behaved at my meeting tonight.

One year my parents’ asparagus just wasn’t growing, and they happened to catch their newly adopted yellow lab eating the fresh asparagus nubs down to the dirt.
I lost my writing buddy 10 weeks ago, and honestly I had no idea how hard it would still be. She always wanted to be with me when I sat down to work, and I didn’t realize how much I’d feel the absence of this little 4-lb purring machine. 😓💔
