Remember when Zion Williamson, a 19 year old at the time, paid the New Orleans’ arena workers’ salaries for a month when the shutdown started and the owner, who is 73 and worth $3 billion, did not? I remember that.
I don’t think it’s wild that the republicans and Blue Lives Matter people don’t care that a cop died. I do think it’s interesting that the police, who are capable of making a news story out of drinking a funny tasting milkshake, have been relatively quiet.
going to be very funny when everybody gears up for a summer of hedonism and finds that after a grinding year all they want is care and intimacy and falls in love by like June 2nd
Everyone wrote their essays and did their studies and argued about "defund the police" and years later a man can still be held down by cops in the middle of the street as he begs for his life and says "they're trying to George Floyd me" and get tased seven times before dying.
LAPD officers tased and tackled a Black English teacher after a car crash, causing him to suffer fatal cardiac arrest, family say.
#KeenanAnderson
, 31, died at the hospital while in police custody.
LAPD killed 170+ people since 2013, Black victims 4.4x more often than white.
The police all across the country are going to attack people in the streets today because a few of their own suffered the indignity of being investigated after they killed someone. In the morning, mayors will chastise the protesters and say these issues are tough.
Nobody in Columbia’s administration should know peace in public. Nobody who does this to their students should be in education. These people are monsters who have cast their lot with genocide.
I know everybody is doing their thing everywhere right now, but I just want to thank black people in Minneapolis for forcing the whole world into the streets. No matter what happens I will be grateful until the day I die.
It’s too bad they felt the need to frame the euphoria thing as “messy behind the scenes drama” and not exposé of poor working conditions. I did sort of think the last five years or so would get people to stop treating the labor of art & entertainment as itself entertainment.
Shafik knows her presidency is over. She knows you cannot tear gas campus and expect a commencement ceremony. She is a baroness wreaking vengeance upon teenagers to defend Israel and an investment portfolio.
Marx is the father of the left because he was always like “the situation is intolerable! But what to do…what to do…hmm…maybe we could publish something…or start another little magazine?”
Biden’s plan is to white knuckle it through July, appear at a heavily protested convention, never appear after 8pm, then campaign in the fall as student protests start back up and he continues to call them antisemites. This, to him, is how you win an election and save democracy.
y'all whine about it getting dark early like you didn't move to New York specifically to pull tight a coat on a black evening while headlights bounce off wet streets and the wind blows so that you have to try the lighter two, three times just to catch this cigarette--your last.
Extremely upsetting that rap became the dominant sound in America, that it started generating wealth, that its idols became the avatars for white people who will never love an actual black person in their lives, and all along the people who make the music kept dying brutally.
I think there's a little too much "The Feds have a masterful, devious escalation plan that guarantees Trump's reelection" and not enough "if you hollow out social programs and rebuild the state for permanent global war there's only one button you can press during unrest."
People learned that "taste" was in part constructed by class and have wound up with a world where "popular art" is the uncut product of increasingly consolidated capital. Snobbery is praxis now. We must bring it back.
Nothing in Wretched of the Earth or the Oxford book on terrorism will teach students what they learn from their own administration sending cops in with flash bangs to kick them in the face and hurl them down the stairs over a disagreement about the college’s investment portfolio.
At some point, everybody in this city is erratic in public, is angry in public, is desperate in public. New Yorkers live publicly. It's too much to know that that plus being black and poor might get you killed, might get your killer celebrated.
In Boerum Hill, an older couple just stepped out of a brownstone and started banging pots and pans. Nobody on the streets reacted, so they added “Guilty! Guilty!” then walked back inside.
A lot of other people have forgotten, but I bet mayors, and maybe presidents, haven’t forgotten that when politicians told the police to calm down a few years ago they said “No.”
The Safdies excel in visually dense east coast urban environments. One glance at Chet’s IG and you’ll see that the name you’re all looking for is “Harmony Korine”
The Biden Administration’s position that it can ignore the leahy law and send Israel weapons, but it cannot ignore the 1990 statute that defunds the UN if Palestine is recognized makes it pretty clear that the appropriate word is not “complicit” but “perpetrator.”
While Antony Blinken is telling Congress he wants to punish the ICC for indicting Netanyahu, he threatened to defund the UN, the World Food Programme and 'starve the world' if the UN recognizes a Palestinian state.
The cops killed a 13 year old and the police, prosecutors and politicians immediately generated a lie about what happened and repeated it everywhere. The idea that you will undo that system through "better training" is an insult to the intelligence of the public and the police.
Looking at the discourses I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of people just haven’t had sex, gotten in a fight, or just had a really good day in a long time and they’re on month 11 of trying to tweet through it and it’s just not working out anymore.
“Order must prevail” he said. 10 years this summer since Ferguson. A decade of images like this, under three different presidents. They’ve brought us to the brink for “order.” It has never been clearer than in this moment that it is us, it is Palestine, or it is the abyss.
Many of you forgot Kanye used to have a blog called Universe City. Many of you forgot that, in 2008, he used that blog to recommend Synecdoche, New York. Many of you forgot about the Gondry/Kaufman/West nexus. I did not forget.
The best not-Christmas-Christmas movie is Kiarostami’s Like Someone In Love. It’s got it all: a bad boyfriend, an escort, an old man, jazz, alienation, incredible car shots, miscommunication, and lonesomeness pierced only by half-embarrassed attempts at generosity of the spirit.
official list of not-christmas-movies-christmas-movies that aren't d*e h*rd and are good
Eyes Wide Shut
Carol
The Holiday
Fanny and Alexander
My Night At Maud's
LA Confidential
Less Than Zero
Asked if the protests caused him to reconsider regional policy at all he said "No." and walked away. Not much more to say than that. You can decide for yourself whether or not genocide is a red line for you. It's not for him.
Bill de Blasio says if you attack a police officer there will be consequences. When he is asked about the police beating people in the streets all night he says he hasn't heard of it. He must be driven from his position and out of public life.
For college seniors, the summer before their freshman year people were beaten all over the country for demanding an end to cops killing black people. Now they are being beaten all over the country for demanding an end to the genocide in Gaza. Impossible to believe this is over.
hope all my fellow lapsed catholics stay strong this weekend. I know the aesthetic is calling but we cannot make our return until we are in our 70s and embark upon a 900 page novel or 3.5 hour film about beauty, grace, damnation, penance and above all --love. Not our time yet.
I know it's mostly about labor discipline for low wage jobs, but you gotta think at least some of this drive to curtail UI is people looking at last summer and saying "we can never again have millions of people with that much time on their hands."
Hollywood abandoning movies being sexy in favor of just hot is directly related to its declining ability to actually make it believable that two people are 𝑖𝑛 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 rather than merely in a relationship.
We all know and love it, but Bookforum also published possibly the only good pan I've read in years. Most come across as auditions for stand-up comedy. This was more terrifying--the result of somebody actually reading and understanding his opponent.
If I were a former American ambassador I would not walk down the road of “there are no innocents in a country that does not depose its warmongering leaders.”
Before we go full conspiracy theory I just want to remind you all that many of you got on the internet and insisted that fireworks were clearly a CIA psy-op as punishment for protests even though you could have walked down the street and asked the kids where they got them from.
Obama's argument about rap being as nihilistic as Trump isn't wrong because it's a conservative 90s talking point or because backpack rap is a thing, but because it ignores the noticeable trend of rap during his presidency from ecstatic high life to haunted depression.
I had never heard of this Jimmy Dore person until like a week ago and now there are articles about what he means for the left. What on earth are you people doing? There was a 50 state interracial uprising against the police six months ago. Get it together!
In 2001 the top three women searched on google were Britney Spears, Pamela Anderson, and Jennifer Lopez. The top three men: Nostradamus, Osama bin Laden, Eminem.
I know the stereotype of young men on mattresses on the floor but whenever I think about mattresses on the floor the first images that come to mind are of Chantal Akerman and Susan Sontag.
If a plain description of Biden’s plans based on public reporting and his actions sound like supporting Trump, your problem is not with me, but with his campaign. I think we’re facing a fascist threat here unlike any since Jim Crow. He should act like it.
I really think we need to redirect like 75% of trying to scold people in the streets for various failures to live up to (unclear) public health standards and towards the complete failure of government to react appropriately from the city to federal levels.
I do hope all the liberals furious about the republicans asking for unity and healing realize this is what they sound like when they call for the same in the middle of black uprisings against the police.
Breaking twitter by doing the Wes Anderson Cannes meme and it just says “white privilege” four times. Everybody’s typing furiously. Nobody’s seen the movie. Nobody knows what I meant. Nobody can say whether I’m right or wrong. I log off.
An unpopular Democratic candidate, who knew voters had questioned his competence, spent the spring of an election year supporting slaughter and demonizing young, college educated left leaning activists. That’s who does a campaign’s ground game. I did not tell him to do that.
@Liamjsm
I really meant other PDs more than theirs. Not seeing it get taken up into the "police are under assault now more than ever" even though they finally got their "the police are the line between America and Chaos" moment
Sorry stars (actors/directors/whomever) should not yell at people on set. It's fine to get rid of people for violating safety guidelines, but the only thing yelling on a set accomplishes is reminding everybody who has the luxury to yell and who doesn't and I don't fuck with that.
“We are all hopeful that our legacy continues to point to Palestine. It was not a moment for us to be the heroes, but rather a moment for us to put ourselves at risk for Gazans, or Palestinians, who are suffering at the hands of Columbia University’s investments in Israel…”
@ConnorSouthard
As a friend of mine from abroad who lives here put you “you don’t really get that there’s a really high standard of living and nothing works“
“The vast majority were current students…well expulsion is a different thing. If not were alum. Everybody had a connection to Columbia in one way or another.”
Sorry to do this, but: people who think MBDTF is Kanye's best album don't actually like his music. People for Graduation are poptimists. People for College Dropout are sentimentalists. People for 808s are soundcloud rappers. People who know it's Yeezus have taste.
I once spent a year trying to write about Godard and the color blue. I thought I could either do this right away, mostly in the middle of the night, or else over the next decade. Thanks to
@markkrotov
and
@lisa_borst
. Thank you to JLG, for a way of living.
Filmmakers romanticize the work so much that everyone's idea of making a movie is an extremely gorgeous person wrestling with their inner demons in a trailer when really it's office work and lifting heavy gear and operating machines (while wrestling with your inner demons).
Criticism of critics is an honorable tradition. Critics have spent a long time burying and dismissing work because its makers might be women, black, gay, foreigners, or just too daring. Really dull how much anti-critic sentiment is now in defense of Netflix and Disney.
I know that we - leftists - have all come to this from many different paths and there are naturally struggles we throw ourselves in more than others, because we are finite. But there is nothing that we want, no thing like a free world, that will not have to go through the police.
“There is no level of violence in any mode that will not be used to stifle dissent for genocide. And I think we put ourselves on the line to demonstrate that.”
Look I hate to weigh in on celebrity romances on twitter, but here’s the thing…this is a beat for beat retelling of the beginning of Written On The Wind down to the hotel suite full of clothes.
Man TV news got so much energy right now they ain’t have when the camps were being filled, when the ban was put in place, when he was trying to get the military to crack down on protesters. Funny.
Hollywood's refusal to fund risky, serious drama in favor of universes of IP backed children's entertainment, but total willingness to make paeans to an era when it did make work like that is a good metaphor for a lot of social phenomena.
Oscar Isaac is set to play director Francis Ford Coppola while Jake Gyllenhaal will play former Paramount studio head Robert Evans in a movie about the making of 'The Godfather':
They have the ugliest, dumbest, most vicious set of arguments and it is frankly beneath every one of us, but unfortunately their side has killers and our side responded to a mass uprising by inquiring whether it polled well.
So much of the response to these high profile killings have hinged upon the idea that it is hard to intervene with the police. But people just sat around and watched some random white guy choke a black man to death. I don't know.
The "trauma plot" demands backstory as the way to generate meaning, to fix meaning in the past...but the American archetype is the man who blows into town with a new name and no history...truth is in action...if I can thread the needle I can write the defense of George Santos
WKCR reporting that anybody in the encampment after 2pm who has a prior disciplinary record and is still in the camp will be expelled and arrested. University Senate is saying Columbia has declared a "state of emergency."
We're not talking enough about how weird it is that I don’t have a single friend with a place in Maine they let me take for a week in the summer. I live in New York City and work in the arts. There are certain things I was led to believe this would naturally entail.
I have said many negative things about the police and have argued quite often about what they do and don't do, but I really couldn't conceive of failing to intervene in a school shooting while preventing parents from doing so.
“(A handcuffed Gomez) said she saw a father tackled, thrown to the ground by police and a third pepper-sprayed. Once freed from her cuffs, Ms. Gomez made her distance from the crowd, jumped the school fence, and ran inside to grab her two children.”
As you may have heard, I believe there have been some fissures in black politics. So I wrote about the riots and the gap between the black political class and the movement in the streets. Thanks again to
@kmcdonovgh
(this is not a pitch) -- the story of what happened to the movies is the story of monopoly law becoming consumer facing, of interest rates, of paper tiger unions, the rise of subscription models, things of that nature.
Lotta tweets about ethics and fiction, but Lorde already said “bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark//now she’s gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart.” Not much else to say here.
It took black people rioting everywhere to provide enough daylight just for people to feel comfortable speaking about the internal culture of the NY Times. Everybody thank black rioters today.
Speaking of the tradition of Hollywood cinema, next month will be 75 years since the House Un-American Activities Committee took up The Hollywood Reporter's list of suspected communists and, with the help of the studios, began the blacklist.
It isn’t stunning, but more pathetic, that commentators like this and others instinctively see themselves as Penny. What was Jordan Neely supposed to do, entitled to do, when a stranger put his arms around his throat?
I presume no one boarded that train with the desire to kill. My genuine question is what are civilians supposed to do? What is the old woman who is punched in the face supposed to do? And what is the young man who fears that might happen but wishes to prevent it supposed to do?
Feels a bit much that one of Columbia's trustees is Jeh Johnson who was Obama's Homeland Security Secretary and now sits on the board of Lockheed Martin.
The call for divestment from Israel seems to have driven these administrators insane. Columbia's students are mostly not from New York and there were ~3 weeks left in the school year. They could have acceded to the students' demands or...waited for them to go home.
A few years ago we all caught a glimpse of how far we might have to go. We've said it all already. We'll say it all again. I hope it's not you or someone you love one day.
