Our data team has suspected for awhile that the true death toll for COVID-19 was higher than the numbers we see published publicly every day. Here's the story, by

We're hiring investigative reporters. Must love public records and data analysis. Bonus points for foreign languages and the ability to tolerate

I personally think this issue needs more media coverage than it has received. I interviewed children detained at Shiloh about medication and abuse in 2014. You are not the only one who has talked to these kids, but I am thankful for your effort:
It’s difficult to describe the extraordinary effort that goes into the production of a daily newspaper. It’s impossible to describe in 280 characters. But here’s a short thread:
I told my 7-year-old that every time he whined about having to do schoolwork I’d deduct a dollar. His allowance is now in the negative, just like the price of oil. We all suffer together.
A young mom with 4 kids—including twin boys, one with cerebral palsy, the other with autism and epilepsy—moves into a rental home near Milwaukee.
She’s been evicted twice before, so this, her new home, seems “a dream come true.”
She has no idea of the home’s history.

There are thousands of people in SF living on the streets — despite hundreds of vacant apartments designated for them.

@SFPublicPress
break down a broken system here. Great reporting.
NEW: Over the past 10 months, as part of a fellowship with
@ProPublica
and
@SFPublicPress
, I’ve investigated SF’s homelessness-to-housing process. One of my findings: we have a major vacancy problem in our permanent supportive housing. 1/4
Thrilled that
@alexdstuckey
is the newest member of our i-team! It was just announced hours ago and she’s already settled into my old desk (despite its obstructed view). Two openings left!
Proud to work for

We had a great run of investigations this year at the

@RobDownenChron
@John_Tedesco
and
@LiseDigger
. It shook the SBC and led to major reforms.
Arturo Castro called his mom after she tested positive for COVID-19, Are you OK? Do you want to go to the doctor again?” She said she was fine. The next morning, he called again, but she didn't answer. By

If you want uncensored honesty about our criminal justice system, listen to
@keribla
. Because she really doesn’t care what you think of her, or her conviction years ago. But she understands all of this better than anyone I know. I think the world of her.
Around 2008, when I was doing a lot of heroin, men w/smoke bombs & guns came crashing through the door of where I was staying. It was a SWAT raid. And it was terrifying. Since Pecan Park, I’ve been thinking about it a lot. Here’s a thread (and a podcast):
What a beautiful front page.
Sometimes it feels hard to get editors interested in prisoners and prison conditions, but I'm so proud the
@HoustonChron
was willing to splash this all across A1.
Dear custodians of public records in TX, I know the law says you have 10 business days to respond to my info request, but if you have the document sitting on your desk and you're looking at it as I talk to you on the phone, you can just go ahead and give it to me, please. Thx.
As much as I have enjoyed being a stay-at-home dad these last two months and confusing my kids, ("Dad, why are we having dinner at 5:30?") it's time for me to figure out a next path. So if you're looking for an editor to help you do some good journalism let me know!
As Texas teachers beg for raises, state employees who manage the $44 billion public school endowment took home millions in "performance" bonuses last year — despite lackluster returns.
You know what’s particularly heartbreaking about all the journalism layoff tweets today? It’s how often said they loved their jobs and how earnestly they praised their colleagues in their goodbyes. We’re losing not not just talented journalists, but good people.
Matt Dempsey (aka

Here’s the story of the difficult decision to ask for boaters to help out during Harvey, made by local officials. I’m pretty sure (but you read it and decide) that they would have loved more resources from the feds at that particular moment.

All six board members of Pasadena Second Century Corporation were indicted for dodging open meeting laws. We had them under scrutiny last year for this.

Sorry, but the best investigative reporters in the country

broke this wide open. But, credit where due, some of the best in the business will help them shut the barn door.
NEW TODAY: Dozens of Southern Baptist churches were aware that a pastor, employee or volunteer had faced allegations of sexual misconduct - yet the churches employed them anyway.

They deliver context and analysis for deep dives while maintaining a grueling nightly ritual of independent counts of COVID-19 cases.
I woke up this morning knowing it was Wednesday but it sure felt like Monday and then I realized every day in 2020 is basically a Monday except that now the customary 5 p.m. on Friday news dumps happen 24/7.

See these crazy 30-somethings who camped out overnight last night so they'd be at the front of the line? It wasn't for Hamilton tickets. It was for kindergarten registration at my neighborhood

school.
The Texas legislature wasn’t in session in 2019 when
@keribla
and I published our investigation into the state’s reliance on child abuse pediatricians in CPS cases. But now lawmakers are proposing several reforms in response.
Here’s our latest:
