Hello! I have some *professional* news to announce! Next week I start a new role as a columnist and editorial writer at @sfchronicle . I’m really excited to blend investigative reporting and opinion writing, and to continue covering this city. More soon!

NEW: Over the past 10 months, as part of a fellowship with @ProPublica and @SFPublicPress , I’ve investigated SF’s homelessness-to-housing process. One of my findings: we have a major vacancy problem in our permanent supportive housing. 1/4

The narrative that homeless people’s personal failings led to their state of despair have made it easy to dehumanize them. Why treat them as people, many seem to think, when they are such an incredible nuisance? New, for @sfchronicle :

Homeless sweeps have always been a veneer, an attempt to act like the city is responding to its residents’ concerns over the homelessness crisis, while doing very little to remediate it. This lawsuit may finally hold SF to account.

Interesting: according to this, only 32% of unhoused people in the TL accepted a congregate shelter bed in recent months. But the city’s own data from July 2020 shows that when it was offering people shelter-in-place hotel rooms, 83% accepted.

In recent months our homelessness outreach system held 45 operations in the TL. 122 people went to shelter, 256 people declined. By opening a new linkage center in the TL under my emergency declaration, we'll have a new option to connect folks with services & treatment.
