Maiden speech: how I'm working cross-party with
@Jeremy_Hunt
to protect our most vulnerable citizens in support of courageous campaigning by Fiona Laskaris following the terrible murder of her autistic son Christopher in 2016.
@hilarybennmp
has been a wonderful help to Fiona &
I was shot at for this country. When I married I was a student and wouldn’t have been able to bring my wife to this country under these new rules. Neither would most British soldiers marrying a foreign wife. One more reason why I’m running for parliament to kick them out.
We are also ensuring that people only bring dependants to the UK that they can support financially by raising the minimum income requirement for family visas.
Sadly I’m on my 2nd
@thameswater
issue today- now in Forest Green- they’re refusing to fix a mains water pipe, which was stated in resident’s property searches last year as Thames Water’s responsibly. They are risking contaminating the water supply. I’ll be writing to the CEO….
Just leaving the count- the Liberal Democrat’s have almost wiped out the Conservatives here in Mole Valley. From a Conservative Council in 2018 we now have 30 Councillors and the Conservatives 3. There’s now the real prospect of sweeping the Conservatives nationally from power
This afternoon I was sworn into Parliament. Thank you to Dorking and Horley constituents for giving me the opportunity to serve you- I’m deeply honoured.
I'm proud that my first vote as an MP was to lift the two-child benefit cap. It's disappointing that Labour won't reconsider their stance. Removing this cap is a key step to reducing child poverty in the UK. So, the child benefit cap remains under Labour.
@LibDems
The WASPI women have been neglected for too long. I'm proud to support
@wendychambLD
's motion urging the new government to follow the Ombudsman's recommendations and plan for compensation without further delays.
.
@thameswater
has been spewing sewage for years into people’s gardens in Leigh and ignoring residents requests to fix it. I will be writing to the CEO,
@Ofwat
and
@EnvAgency
to complain.
Labour confirm Dorking and Horley is not a battleground seat for them.
So it's between me and the Conservatives.
I’m truly grateful to Labour supporters who lend me their votes - we need to get rid of this catastrophic government.
Putin is making his nightmare of colour revolution contagion real. Key indicator of the end of a dictatorship; the military high command withdraws their cooperation. Lukashenko now in deep trouble.
Jeremy, as a former UK diplomat on Syria, the diplomacy you call for is utterly useless when not backed by the credible threat of force when dealing with a gas killing animal. Children die in agony that might not had the international community met its responsibility to protect.
These are serious times.
Now is the moment for moral and political leadership, not kneejerk military responses.
My article in the
@Guardian
about the missile attacks on Syria.
Great to welcome
@EdwardJDavey
to Dorking & Horley to talk about our poll bounce! Only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives in Dorking and Horley
I would like to think I’m possibly the only parliamentary candidate who’s been upside down mid air on the BBC. With
@EdwardJDavey
on
@bbclaurak
this morning.
Great to be back with the team to help Sarah Dyke get elected in Somerton and Frome next week- we need more volunteers to get the over the line

“That is what has happened with the far right rhetoric in this country.” Hugely powerful words from
@DavidLammy
. About time moderate politicians recognised their parties have been hijacked by their extremist fringes and asked who are they helping by staying.
My parents came here as citizens, now the
#windrush
generation are suffering inhumane treatment at the hands of the Home Office.
If you lay down with dogs, you get fleas!
This is a day of national shame: the PM and Home Sec must apologise!
Great to see our campaign targeting the Conservative heartlands here in Mole Valley in today's Financial Times. People are fed up with all the damage caused by Conservatives and are ready for change.

Shocking increase in pollution levels in the river Mole in July- I’m due to meet the Thames Water CEO soon alongside my 6 Surrey Lib Dem MP colleagues and will be raising this.
Something bad is happening in the River Mole... our tests show that pollution levels have taken a shockingly steep upturn through July with levels in the catchment far exceeding the equivalent last July or indeed anything we have tested before in 15 months
So we’re on! If you’d like a Lib Dem MP in six weeks time in
#Dorking
&Horley then we need more volunteers so please sign up: Only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives here!
I’m commenting in the FT this morning on Labour fury at prospect of new centrist party via
@FT
. We’re standing in May to force Labour to listen to its members and offer a final say referendum.

I fully agree with
@EdwardJDavey
- everyone is horrified by the Southport attack. I’m angered by the riots and those responsible must be bought to justice. The affected communities must be properly supported so that they can rebuild in peace.
Robert Jenrick should be standing up for British values of tolerance and religious freedom, not trashing them with shameful, divisive and inflammatory rhetoric.
Robert Jenrick, who’s standing to be leader of the Conservative Party, wants Muslims to be arrested for saying "God is great" in Arabic in public.
That’s what Allahu Akbar means and every Muslim says it every day when they pray.
Just met Esther Sharples, the COO of Thames Water in Parliament- she assured me that Dorking sinkhole compensation to local businesses would be paid in weeks not months - their reps can help fill in the forms if needed and you don’t need to wait until it is repaired to claim -
Pleased that part of the drainage issue on Station Approach, Horley is being fixed. The Lib Dems,
@stevewotton
& I campaigned on this in the local elections- we’ll keep the pressure up to get the rest fixed.
@HorleyLibDems
Yesterday I represented the Liberal Democrats in the financial and economic crime debate in Westminster Hall. Nearly £5 billion has been lost to fraud in the UK in the last five years, so we’re calling for a national online crime agency to effectively tackle these crimes.
I'm in touch with Surrey County Council over rumours that UK Oil & Gas (UKOG) are flouting the Supreme Court ruling and continuing to drill for oil at Horsehill. If these rumours are true, Surrey Council must hold UKOG to account
Great day campaigning in Somerset and Frome for
@SarahDykeLD
- strong 💪 on the doorstep- people sick of the Tories and switching to
@LibDems
by the hundreds!
The Liberal Democrats will unblock hospital beds by investing in social care to help fix the NHS crisis. Only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives in Dorking and Horley
Last week Mole Valley residents punished the Conservatives for taking them for granted on the cost of living, the NHS and our river full of sewage- next stop- General Election
Conservative Surrey County Council failed to close a Horley footpath being spewed with Thames Water's sewage for weeks after numerous complaints from activists until Lib Dem Cllr
@stevewotton
and I posted a video to embarrass them into action. Now the spewing has hit BBC news...
Our SEND children are being failed- I set out my plans with Surrey Live: 1) Championing more SEND schools 2) Putting SEND parents in charge of Surrey SEND provision 3) Bringing in the best charity sector innovations to support our SEND children
Finally after pressure from the Lib Dems, the Environment Agency is getting tough on Thames Water, fining them £3.3mn for dumping sewage in the River Mole, our local river. This shows why we need a tough new independent regulator for water companies
I went to the Horse Hill oil site today after the concerning news that oil production was up in July, despite the Supreme Court quashing their planning permission from Surrey County Council. I’ve written to the CEO and Surrey County Council- who told me they’re investigating
Well in response to our video this morning
@SurreyCouncil
has finally closed the footpath after weeks of complaints from
@stevewotton
and other local councillors and activists. Shocking that they’ve kept a footpath open for weeks with raw sewage on it.
@BBCSurrey
@surreylive
I spoke on
@BBCSurrey
about working with
@Jeremy_Hunt
on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 following the murder of autistic man Christopher Laskaris 2005. Since then I’m thrilled that Labour MP
@JakeBenRichards
is working with us too. Jake was a Barrister and represented
Great to be out in Ewhurst today with the team. People are excited to be able to vote for the local candidate- I grew up in Peaslake, the next door village. Only the Lib Dems can beat the Conservatives in Dorking and Horley.

MPs to the Chief Executive of Thames Water. We aim to discuss their infrastructure improvement plans and advocate for a fairer deal for customers. Addressing the issue of raw sewage in our rivers is a top priority!
This from Labour in Battersea this morning. Still trotting out the "we're all Remainers" line. Voting Labour didn't do us much good in Wandsworth in 2017.

Excited to hit the streets of Hookwood today with our dynamic local council candidates, Cllr Lesley Bushnell, Alcia Loach, and Jo Farrar-Astrop! The residents of Hookwood are ready for change and seeking an alternative to the Conservative party.
We have spoken to almost half the people in Horley this year. We know what matters. Our three fantastic local candidates,
@stevewotton
, Sam and Pete are your neighbours so they work on what matters to you. Only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives in Dorking & Horley
Last night, I supported the Lib Dem amendment to the King's Speech, advocating to remove the two-child benefit cap, tougher action on sewage dumping, more GPs and social care improvements. Sadly, the Labour government voted it down.
Nora Mulready is a person of deep integrity and I am proud to be a colleague of hers on
@UnfinishedR
. Nora has the moral courage to hold difficult conversations that need to be had about sensitive questions. It’s a shame that people with an agenda choose to misunderstand nuance
Thank you (so much!) to all the wonderful people who've fought my corner today. Thank you to
@TheIndGroup
for being the first political party in the UK to defend principle of forthright, honest & sincere debate about contentious issues. Prouder by the day to be involved. ✊🙏💖
Any democratic mandate the Conservatives had to interpret the referendum result for hard Brexit was lost when they lost their majority last year

That means we will be in a position to conduct our own trade policy and sign trade deals with countries around the world.

I recently spoke on
@BBCRadioSurrey
on the crisis in policing in Surrey: Police morale lowest ever with 20% wanting to leave, PCSOs cut by 75%, to 2 in Dorking and 1 covering Horley. No monitored CCTV in East Surrey. Horley police station shut & Horley crime up 50% since 2017.
I’ve been working with Westvale Park residents on the ongoing saga of the lack of GP surgery, shops & pub, all promised by the developer years ago - I’ve met with the Borough Council Leader & written to the Deputy PM on the lack of infrastructure with new developments
Out campaigning with the team and three of our fabulous council candidates today in Westcott; Abhiram Magesh, Leah Mursaleen-Plank and Bradley Nelson. We've got some great council candidates coming through. Many residents worried about gas bills and that "everything is going up"
Beautiful event at Dorking Mosque organised by my lovely aunt ❤️ great to see so many people supporting the Muslim community in Dorking.
Thank you
@_Chris_Coghlan
for supporting!
Very pleased that the Minister for Early Education
@StephenMorganMP
wrote to me that the department’s officials are working proactively to progress the Betchwood Vale Academy for special needs children as soon as practicable. We desperately need more SEND provision in Surrey.
Over the last week, I've been campaigning across the District and Constituency with many of our fabulous council candidates, including Bookham, Leatherhead, Westcott, Brockham, Capel and Horley - strong support for the Liberal Democrats!
#LibDems
Last night I was on Ian Dale’s LBC show talking about the national crisis in special needs provision and what a better special needs education system might look like
There are not enough specialist school places for Mole Valley ASC and COIN children for September 2024 yet the BVA school has been delayed. I’ve written to SoS Education requesting an urgent update
.
@HighwaysSurrey
is working night and day to fix the diesel spill. But local restaurant owners phoned me in tears that Dking High Strt will also be closed 8pm-6am from Mon for 10 nights in their 8pm golden hour. I’ve requested Highways to reschedule 👇or not start until 10pm
Westvale Park, Horley has been left with no GP surgery, pub or community centre for seven years. I raised this on
@BBCSurrey
with Keith Barlow, Chair of the Resident’s Association and the broader issue of developers getting away with building housing without the infrastructure
Yesterday I spoke about the urgent need for more NHS dentists in Dorking and Horley - constituent after constituent has raised with me how it is almost impossible to get an NHS dentists- with devastating consequences for our children who can end up in hospital with tooth decay
I strongly support Mole Valley District Council’s application for a banking hub in Dorking. Until now Dorking hasn’t been eligible to apply as we still have Nationwide- but LINK recently changed the rules. We need more banking facilities in Dorking after all the branch closures.
Vote Lib Dem in Fetcham tomorrow for three fantastic local candidates Raj, Caroline and Phil who will passionately represent our local community
#VoteLibDem
My colleague
@AlPinkerton
raises serious questions about the abandonment of the Chagossian people in the UK Mauritius agreement. Horley has a significant Chagossian community and my constituents have been raising their concerns
3. While the U.K.-Mauritius agreement announced this week is consistent with international law, it is, in my opinion, a disgraceful abandonment of the Chagossian people, who have been serially failed by the U.K. since the 1960s.
I've been reacting to the news that last year 1,809 Surrey special needs children were out of school over a third of the time on
@BBCSurrey
this morning alongside several anguished parents. These children are out of school either because the school environment is unsuitable, or
Great to be out supporting some of our fantastic new local Liberal Democrat candidates including Abhiram Magesh, a law student from Wescott, Chris Budleigh, a Deloitte-trained accountant from Westhumble and Leigh Mursaleen-Plank a neuroscientist from Dorking.
We were speaking to residents across Dorking and Horley- despite the weather people are hopeful about getting the Conservatives out next year
#GeneralElectionN0W
As a former UK diplomat on Syria heartbreaking to read. Esp. on moral bankruptcy of
@jeremycorbyn
calling for “diplomacy” instead of “force”. Diplomacy could only save lives in Syria if backed by credible threat of force.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Tim Coghlan, Managing Director of Braunston Marina. An important local business. He spent some time to tell me why he no longer backs the Conservatives.
#GetBorisGone
Just down by the river Mole right next to Gatwick airport in Horley- it’s still pretty high with flooded fields in the background- so important that we have decent flood protection and meet our net zero responsibilities
Very pleased that Thames Water have now bought their estimate of completing the West Street, Dorking, repairs forward by two months to before the end of September. I have double checked with them that this revision is correct; “after the repair we will need to carry our
