Immensely grateful that my K99 was selected for funding. Hopeful to make greater headway understanding the lasting impacts of traumatic stress and stress-related illnesses.
This would not be possible without the tips I received while applying — here are some of my favorites 🧵
Excited to share the first experimental work from my postdoc with
@denisejcai
. We show stress-induced plasticity in the ventral hippocampus and amygdala support dissociable defensive behavior changes, highlighting multiple memory systems support the lasting impacts of stress.
Honored to be selected for this award and super excited for the research on hypothalamic regulation of stress it will help support!! Tremendous thanks to the Doft Family and
@SinaiBrain
.
✨CONGRATULATIONS to Drs.
@ZoeChristenson
&
@ZachTPennington
on receiving the 2024 Doft Family Postdoctoral Innovator Award! This award will provide $25K to support an innovative research project that will help the postdoc’s transition to independence.

Best decision I’ve made in my academic journey was joining Denise’s lab. Inspiring and fun people, incredible mentorship, exciting science, and NYC!!
@SinaiBrain
is also all around amazing place. I’d apply!! Feel free to reach out with questions.
📢 We’re recruiting neuroscience postdocs! 🧠
The Cai Lab is on a mission to unravel the neural processes behind memory stability and flexibility across the lifetime. If you’re interested in working in these areas, please send an intro and CV to denisecailab

ATTENTION 🧠 GRAD STUDENTS!
Interested in a neuroscience postdoc? Apply now for the opportunity to visit us in NYC at
@SinaiBrain
, share your work, and receive $1000. We highly encourage individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM to apply!
PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD!!
So happy to visit
@UCLA
with family in tow! Will always feel like home. Thanks Michael Fanselow and
@KateWassum
for having me!! And yes, my wife and mom are wearing matching sweaters 🥰👯♀️
We’re ready for you, SFN!! So excited to be sharing our work on the persistent effects of stress in person, and to have Alexa LaBanca and Patlapa Sompolpong (
@patlapa_s
) helping. Come by CC10 and CC11 from 1-5 today.

Please help spread the word about this fantastic program! Awardees will be given a unique opportunity to meet with the Mount Sinai neuroscience community, share their work, get some $$$, and have fun in NYC!!!
Such an exciting and fun panel! Grateful for the opportunity to take part in it. Can’t wait for the next Stress Neurobio meeting in Montreal!!! Thanks
@ShanskyLab
and
@JCBCneuro
for organizing!
The lineup of the upcoming Stress Neurobiology Workshop is mind-blowing🤯! Could not be more excited to be a part of it. Thanks to those working so hard to put this incredible meeting together and for selecting me. Be on the lookout for registration info!!
Shoutout to
@AyaOsman
, a brilliant scientist dedicated to making real world impacts, passionate change maker, gifted educator, and wonderful friend. Thanks for continually inspiring me and so many more.
1. It takes a village. Start thinking about a mentorship team early in your postdoc. Reviewers commented on the authenticity of my training structure and mentors/collaborators, and that’s because
@DeniseJCai
encouraged me to do this early on.
We are SUPER EXCITED to announce the outstanding winners of year 2 of the #
#MountSinai
Emerging Scholars Program, Kay Nisbett (
@kaynisbett
) & Najah Walton (
@NajahWalton
)! Please JOIN US in congratulating them. We look forward to their visit on June 16th! See details below👇
3. Don’t gloss over the training — it is a career development award. Emphasize how both technical and career training will move you forward. My Research Strategy had the lowest scores but my application showed clear plans for my career trajectory.
The Shuman Lab at
@SinaiBrain
is looking for new postdocs!
With new funding💸 and students graduating🎓we now have 2+ postdoc positions open in the lab. We use in vivo recordings and manipulations to investigate memory circuits and how they go wrong in neurological diseases.👇
6. Establish how your research separates you from your advisors. It will matter that your vision is not exactly what your grad/postdoc advisor already does — reviewers and POs want you to be competitive when you start your own lab.
5. Build a vision of your future lab and make it a throughline in the application. These awards are an investment in your future. Mapping out how the proposal will get you to the vision of your independent lab is key. Thinking about this was also super rewarding.
I received a ton more advice and am happy to chat about it anytime! Thanks to
@DeniseJCai
for being the most supportive mentor and my co-mentors
@ScottRusso_can
and
@theMazeLab
for your help along the way.
This is an incredible opportunity for those interested in neuro grad school! I haven’t seen a more supportive and fun environment and the science is mind-blowing 🤯
Interested in how neurons communicate to make memories + how this process goes wrong in disease? The Shuman lab
@SinaiBrain
is hiring a technician to help investigate circuit changes in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. Come join us!
Retweets appreciated
Virtual Miniscope Workshop starts today at 11am ET! We will cover all aspects of calcium imaging with Miniscopes from surgery to data analysis. Still time to register!
4. It’s not too late if you can only submit once. I was scared that with little time to resubmit, I was a goner. My PO reassured me that many people only apply once and get it. So can you.
WE ARE TRILLED to announce the winners of the Mount Sinai Emerging Scholars Program, Lilyana Quigley (
@lilyanadream
) and Brianna George (
@BriannaEGeorge
)! Please join us in congratulating them. We can’t wait to have them visit us on June 3rd! See details below👇
@denisejcai
Thanks Denise! I feel the same about working with you. Joining your lab has been the most enriching and fun phase of my scientific journey. You’re the best!!!
NEW PREPRINT! Led by
@susie_feng
, we characterized memory impairment and entorhinal-hippocampal desynchronization in epileptic mice. We found early hippocampal deficits and late-onset MEC deficits that emerged with progressively worse cognitive impairment.

@MunirGunesKutlu
I struggled for months trying to get enough power from LEDs and gave up. I think they would be ok if I were only doing unilateral stim and/or didnt need a rotary joint, but the power loss at each junction is huge. I spent more trying than on the laser I eventually bought.
@MunirGunesKutlu
Thinking about cost saving - Now that there are efficient inhibitory opsins like stGtACR1 that can be activated with blue light, we use one laser to do activation & inhibition experiments.

Hi Taylor. Yes, GitHub is the best way to reach out about this, either as an Issue if encountering an error or in the discussion forum.
