I need an excuse to procrastinate, so I’m starting a series of threads on the letter ض. You may remember @phdnix ‘s fantastic thread from several months back demonstrating how the pronunciation of the classical ض was distinct from the modern pronunciation

Arabic is often called Luġat al-Ḍād "the language of the Ḍād". Clearly indicating that this language was considered unique specifically for its pronunciation of this letter. But how was it actually pronounced?

We are not materialists nor empiricists. We believe that the metaphysical weapons and tools that Allah provides us influence the material world better than anything we can do with our bodies. What good are our protests without tahajjud? And what good is our tahajjud without fajr?

A tough reality I’ve had to come to terms with is that a person can hurt me, betray me, wrong me, etc. and still be an inherently good person afterwards. I am the protagonist of my own story, and they are the protagonist of theirs. Not everyone who’s wronged me is an antagonist.

When completing the Qur’an, proper etiquette according to the tradition of the Qurrā’ is not to stop at the end of al-Nās, but to restart with al-Fātiḥa and recite until the word al-mufliḥūn in al-Baqara. This practice is known among the Qurrā’ as al-ḥāll al-murtaḥil.

An issue that early Qur’an readers encountered was لا تأمنا (lā ta’mannā) in Q12:11: They (the brothers of Joseph) said, “O father! What’s with you that you don’t trust us with Joseph…?” The problem is that lā ta’mannā doesn’t mean “you don’t trust us.” It means “don’t trust us”
