We are witnessing the Indian govt colonizing Great Nicobar. A 75,000 crore project was cleared this month - including a ship-terminal, tourist city, airport etc, on an untouched island with Nicobarese and other tribes who've been living here far before Indian civilization began.

Indian govt's plan to make Great Nicobar a modern city is a project of plain settler colonialism. 50 yrs later Shompen and Nicobarese tribes will be slave-workers in their own land, with their forests and ways of living wiped out. India's plight was this less than a century ago.

Yesterday I proudly stood alongside Jenu Kuruba Adivasis, as they protested their forced eviction from Nagarhole National Park. On 13th October this year, Cariappa from their tribe was allegedly tortured and killed by Forest Dept officials in retaliation for their resistance.

Delhi's 52°C record today is an urban creation. Meteorologists attribute it to 'direct sunlight and lack of shade' along with hot winds from Northwest. This is worsened by ever growing expanses of open concrete, tarmac and brick which increase ambient temperatures by 10 - 15 °C.

Nayapakkam a lake near Chennai and a bird hotspot. 190 species have been recorded here and is a refuge for migratory harriers. Excavators were filling one end of the lake yesterday. Allegedly the ACS group is building an International school over it.

Its nesting season at Vedanthangal bird sanctuary, and I've taken 3 groups of children so far. Each time we pass @SunPharma_Live 's factory inside the sanctuary there's a strong noxious smell, even from a kilometre away. Kids get a headache. I worry for the breeding birds.

Odiyur Lagoon is a 1000 hectare wetland and a waterbird hotspot about 70km South of Chennai. Every winter tens of thousands of migratory ducks, waders, and other birds gather here. Odiyur is now threatened with a four lane highway expansion. 1/n

Adyar river forms the main hydrology of South Chennai. A flood wall is being built in it at Nandambakkam along 3km encroaching half the river and denying it a flood plain. This is 50m inside an existing floodwall. River will severely punish such abuse of it.

There are about 100 Great Indian Bustards left in the wild, and the Central Electricity Authority doesn't seem to care. They've passed a notification to build more overhead power lines in its habitat, the thing which has endangered the bird most.

'Expert committees' can openly hide facts and abet commercial projects - harbours in this case. I was there during NGT appointed committee inspection of Kaliveli estuary last month. We saw a turtle carcass and fresh tracks at the project site. Their report denies it completely.
