Sophie is officially the first student hired by my project funding. Such a pleasure that she chose us. I’m impressed by her intelligence, motivation and brilliant academic skills! GO becomes magic fibres with her hands!

How can researchers achieve a “true academic freedom”? At least I can’t coz I have to struggle to book appointments among enthusiastic tourists and travel several times by train to the consulate to beg for a visa for in-person conference!
Heading to Strasbourg for the E-MRS Spring meeting 2024! I will discuss about chirality in 2D materials Wednesday 29th May. So excited to be back to my second hometown Strasbourg and see my old friends! Hope to see you at Symposium J!
Great journey to my first

I know in my life —my mother who has been a computer/software engineer for almost 40 years. I always tried to catch up her talent of writing codes but failed and ended up in a PhD in chemistry.

Happy to meet so many successful alumni and friends at E-MRS 2024 in Strasbourg! I really appreciated scientific and career discussions with all of you. Can’t wait to see you again and bonne continuation!
The asymmetric dressing of 2D materials is a powerful strategy to fabricate artificial synapses triggered by optical and electrochemical stimuli for next-generation energy-efficient computing! ⚗️⚡️🧠🚀

Two-dimensional materials can display chirality that enables asymmetric properties. This Perspective discusses possible ways to create and control structural chirality and the intriguing physics of these systems.

A very typical narrative from asian female academics. While she asks for help from everyone but not to her husband to deal with family issues.

Holding an European PhD degree, my salary is not even touching the minimum for applying a skilled worker visa. Can’t predict what will be the consequence of this wave of nationalism.
We’re increasing the minimum earnings threshold for skilled workers by 48% to £38,700, encouraging businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce.

2D TMDs 2023: Call for Abstracts
June 26-29, 2023| Cambridge, UK
We are going to host an in-person conference— 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides 2023 at Churchill College, Cambridge, UK. Abstracts from students and PDRAs are very welcome! Link below:
We tried to raise the importance of this rarely-studied 2D material by digging into the electronic properties and understanding the crystal structures more clearly. They are powerful, versatile and more stable than BP! Thanks to Antonio for initiating this pleasant collaboration
A fantastic talk today by Professor Michael Grätzel of
@EPFL_en
ranging from his invention of 3D mesoscopic TiO2 nanoparticle dye sensitized solar cells and the emergence of perovskite solar cells to new advances in cuprous oxide photo-electrochemical cells. An inspiring talk!
Bump into an exhibition showing novel technological discoveries of today: graphene, molecular machines and carbon composites. What a coincidence that I am researching on them all. It’s the first time I feel that I am doing something valuable to human and earth.

These days I’ve had many discussions on current situation as postdoc researchers. A sarcastic conclusion is 1) a successful postdoctoral earns 5£/h; 2) an average postdoc earns 10£/h; 3) a bad postdoc earns 15£/h but all of them can be unemployed at any time.

So excited to have discussions with my "idol" of research whose work inspired me a lot during my PhD in the lab! Can't wait to have a chance to see the fascinating optical setups in Singapore!

As a postdoc I wake up at 6AM and goes to bed at 1AM. I spend 80% time for research and 20% for sports. My breakfast, lunch and dinner are all in front of my screen. Weekend is not in my dictionary. I’m only feeling guilty when I look at the price of my favorite bag.

Being young researcher of this “baby-boomer” generation of academia, it is hard to build up a righteous scholarly standard. We are evaluated and known by a series of parameters set up by the authorities but not what we have done. More reformations should be on the way.
Focus on quality, not quantity. Encourage year-long sabbaticals. Grants should fund riskier, long-term projects or fund careers rather than projects. Give "scholars the gift of time".

Regarding the definition of “skilled workers”. It is us scientists who take risks to develop high tech and figure out science, or those who sit in offices in finance sectors making slides and manipulate money of ordinary people? Salary of the latter is 3-10 times higher.
Surprised to see Advanced Materials celebrates the 100 Anniversary of Xiamen University for it's prestigious research in chemistry and materias. Proud to be an alumina of Xiamen University. That's where I started my career in materials science at 18yo.

Merci pour ce témoignage. La Chine a été tellement critiqué par l'Occident. On avait fait des fautes au début car on manque de connaissance de ce virus tout nouveau. Mais les gouvernements occidentaux ignorent tout ce qui a fait par les chinois.

I learned this when I had the plombier to fix my bathroom tubing the first week I went to France. You’ll find it very important to say “je ne suis pas dispo”
@Summer912_
Very true! This is what everyone in academia experienced. But after each rejection I can figure out what is my weakness and improve in the next application.
