Why are there so many wildfires these days? Why aren’t there enough fire fighters? Why are incarcerated fire fighters not paid real wages? Why are they blocked from firefighting after release? Why didn’t we protect incarcerated people from COVID-19? All the answers are shameful.

Inmate firefighters are helping fight California's fires, though some teams aren't available due to #COVID19 quarantines and releases. They are paid as little as $2-5/day and are often blocked from getting firefighting jobs after release due to past convictions.

For yrs, prison telecom corps have recorded attorney-client calls. Until now, these constitutional violations have only been covered by local reporters and lawsuits quietly settled, but it's a systemic practice. It's time for a @CivilRights investigation.

Incarcerated people are forced to use meager wages (if you can call a few cents an hr a wage at all) to pay for overpriced snacks in commissary they need to make up for “savings” generated on abysmal state-provided meals. It’s another form of cost shifting with dire consequences.

"Prisons are food deserts. Mess-hall meals typically contain very little nutritional value, and most commissaries offer few, if any, fresh food options." Formerly incarcerated writer Michael Capers explains how the prison food system poisons people.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On September 9, 1971, incarcerated men took control of the Attica Correctional Facility in New York demanding the recognition of their humanity. It became one of the most well-known prison uprisings in history. 🧵

We stand in solidarity with those who have filed a class action lawsuit against the state of Alabama for forcing incarcerated people to work for little or no pay in jobs that enrich government entities and private companies.

For incarcerated workers in CA, this took as many as 246,154 work hours. For a few corporate attorneys, this wouldn’t have been 200 hours.

2) Fines and fees are a huge funding source for police and prisons that comes directly from communities. Everything from traffic tickets and court fines to jail phone calls and commissary sales--often paid by families--generate funding for police and prisons. #DefundPolice

And, judging by the intentionally comedic tone of their ad, they do too. This ad says it all—by replacing in-person visits with video calls, all they’re doing is widening the distance between incarcerated people and their loved ones, like grandmothers. (3/5)

How does the prison industry increase the number of people in prison?

Testifying in Congress, I was asked: Do you believe the prison industry should be abolished? My answer: Yes. The prison industry makes money in two ways—by increasing revenue, which means more bodies behind bars and for longer, and by cutting expenses, which means poorer care.

What @NYGovCuomo doesn't mention while he's cracking jokes: The hand sanitizer is "made, conveniently" by incarcerated people being forced to work for 65 cents/hour. If you want to improve public health, pay people behind bars a real wage. #laborislabor #peopleoverprofits

MA families spend $14.4M annually on calls with their incarcerated loved ones. It would cost the state just $3.4M to provide free calls across all its prisons and jails. It's time MA passes S.1559 and H.1900. Read this sharp op-ed by a MA advocate. 🧵
