3. A lot of visa rules make sense, but this one does not. It’s stressful and expensive for residents. It adds up paperwork for programs, not to count residents missing work days due to visa delays. It creates more work for the already overcrowded US embassy every year.

5/7 Learn from your seniors. Ask them everything. Don’t do anything without knowing the reasoning behind it. If you have time, look it up. Use those gaps of free time between rounds, admissions, and notes to study what you’re treating. That’s the way to study during intern year.

6/7 Eat well, sleep, and exercise. Stop using work as an excuse to not take care of yourself. If you work long hours you should be taking extra care of your body and mind, not the opposite. Night shifts are not an excuse for fast food. Anyone can work out for 30 minutes 3-4x/week

2/7 Pick at the very least one thing you enjoy doing and fit that into your weekly schedule as a chore. Running, cooking, singing, dancing. Your life will change a lot during intern year. Sticking to something you love helps with maintaining your “old” identity and true self.

Told the scheduling chief I signed up for the Chicago Marathon (October 8th) and asked her if she could avoid a call day that day. Got my schedule... Mostly electives and outpatient rotations from 6/21 to 10/8. Golden weekends for long runs 🥹😍🥹

Watched a patient pass away today. And it was the most peaceful passing I’ve ever witnessed. He wasn’t sedated, or intubated (or being terminally extubated). He wasn’t receiving chest compressions. The atmosphere was pleasant and the room was quiet.

First week back home, first week back being clinically active. Today I had to give a patient the diagnosis of metastatic pancreatic cancer. Those unexpected news at the ED is one of my biggest fears. And what hurts me the most is to see those patients right before they know.

It took me >50h to get home (thanks, American Airlines), but they make it worth it every time 🥹♥️ Moving far (far) away from family and friends was the most challenging part of intern year. But you truly learn to appreciate the small things. And trust me, it’s worth it.
