@naretevduorp My dad fought on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was a bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force. He was awarded a DFC and 2 Bronze stars. I never knew the effect it had on him until he was dying of dementia, when every day he imagined he was fighting that war again.
