Learning how to fight misinformation that impedes progress in climate change, pandemic response, democracy, and all things important. Unlikely to respond to DMs
Imagine you're in a sudden disaster like a burning building, sinking ship, airplane crash, where your goal is to get out quickly before you die.
Now, you would think that everyone around you would have the same goal, right?
Researchers in disaster behavior know otherwise.

only to encounter indifference/hostility.
Press on. You're not insane. Keep trying to escape.
Reference: John Leach (2004) Why People ‘Freeze’ in an Emergency: Temporal and Cognitive Constraints on Survival Responses Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine. 75/6.
6/6
The most cited proportions (reference in final tweet) are:
1) 10-15% will have their wits about them, understand the danger of staying put, devise a plan to escape, and act on that plan.
Covid-aware folks are in this small minority, but may be doubting their sanity.
2/6
Even if you're wearing an N95 or better, it only works when it's sealed on your face.
It doesn't work when off – not for eating, drinking, speaking, nor "mask breaks."
An analogy to clarify mask/respirator misuse that leads people to sincerely conclude they don't work...1/
2) "The second group, comprising approximately 75% of the population, will be stunned and bewildered, showing impaired reasoning and sluggish thinking. They will behave in a reflexive, almost automatic manner."
This is the maskless majority of folks living their 2019 lives.
3/6
3) 10-15% will "show a high degree of counterproductive behavior adding to their danger (uncontrolled weeping, confusion, screaming, and paralyzing anxiety).
These are most similar to 'loud' minimizers who blame every post-covid complication on the 'jab' or 'face-diapers'.
4/6
Rather than a single disaster leaving you perplexed why others are acting so irrationally, this has been ongoing for months/years, as more Covid protections are dropped.
So, like some disaster ground-hog-day, you wake up daily wanting to escape a flaming/sinking structure,

Ever go on a drive, where for whatever reason, you didn't wear your seatbelt?
You arrive at your destination without incident and completely un-injured. Do you wonder, I was fine without a seatbelt, why wear seatbelts ever?
Answer: No, you wear them in case of a collision. 2/
I've seen masks/respirators being used almost ceremoniously vs. functionally.
For example, people would enter a room, get settled in their seat, and only put on their masks when a speaker starts talking.
A mask is not like a jacket that you button up when you stand up! 4/
So where did we get the idea that taking off a mask is ok when eating/drinking?
Likely it was in part to support the restaurant industry.
You can still support the restaurant industry by getting take out.
Eat the food at home with your household, or outside with others. 6/
Until we can instantly and reliably detect virus in the air, you wear a mask as much as possible in shared air.
CO2 levels are a proxy but don't directly do this.
Until a crystal ball can tell us when we will get in a car accident, we wear seat belts as much as possible. 5/
Think you can vax and relax for measles?
Two thirds (2/3) or 66.7% who got measles in 1991 in Waterloo were appropriately immunized.
Use an N95 or better.
I was one of the fully vaccinated children who was infected with Measles in 1991 in Waterloo. It was not a fun time.
It spread quickly at school. We didn’t know about cleaning the air, opening windows, staying home when sick, or wearing respirators.
Let’s not repeat history.
Have you ever gone on a drive, where despite wearing your seatbelt, you got into an accident and got injured?
Do you swear off seatbelts, proclaiming they don't work?
Answer: No, wearing your seatbelt likely reduced the severity of your injury sustained during the accident. 3/
If you don't think masks/seatbelts work because you don't like wearing them, that's a different story.
I suspect that few people prefer wearing a mask/seatbelt to not wearing one if there is no risk of infection/collision.
But there is risk of both, so do the right thing. 8/8
MPP Randy Hillier asked followers to disobey Ottawa police's request that people not flood 911 phone lines. Hillier also doxed RCMP officers' phone numbers, but claims posts demanding his arrest were ‘motivated by bots'. I am not a bot.
#ArrestRandyHillier
Where did we first get the idea that we didn't need masks?
Early in the pandemic, there was a mask shortage. Healthcare workers, at greater risk than the average work-from-homer, needed them more.
If people were hoarding toilet paper, would masks have not also been hoarded? 7/
Hey
@flo_mask
these are more my style - you need not make all new filters (in black), maybe just a set of filter covers in black and other in-demand colors?
Friends, Ontario's current Premier can't answer questions for his job without a binder of scripted responses.
Let's not make the mistake of rehiring him.
Please, vote strategically.
We've seen the polls. Remember, those are almost always *province wide* polls.
We don't need to win province wide; we just need to win our ridings. And to do that, all we need to do is
#UniteTheVote
But that means getting organized. Here's a thread🧵 of ways you can help:
@ChristyCeeCK
Seriously, what kind of crazy-shit province do we live in, where schools must beg the Chief Medical Officer of Health, for *permission* to protect not even all children, but medically vulnerable children, using a cheap and effective means?
On network news, they said Pelé died of colon cancer. Glad I also watch PBS News Hour: he had cancer, but it didn't kill him; that was covid. I wish news outlets would stop fudging cause of death reporting. They're journalists, not policy makers. Why won't they report the facts?
As I continue to use expired/about-to-expire rapid tests (RATs) to test my poop, it is with mixed feelings that I report:
I have NOT lost my sense of smell.
And, definitely wash your hands when working with poop.
A short thread on a few other things I've learned follows.

Just got a scam/spam call that started with, "Hi Grandma!"
Instead of saying, "I'm not your grandma - stop calling us",
I should've said, "Clive, is that you?"
Scammer: "Yes, yes it is..."
"Oh good, Grandma got arrested. Can I have your credit card information for bail money?"
Hi all - I voted for
@DFisman
and few other favorites nominated here.
I think it's the least we could do given how much crap they've taken for sharing the inconvenient truth in the last few years.
You may need to create an account first.
The Ontario government’s decision to scrap hundreds of renewable energy projects early in Premier Doug Ford’s tenure may have cost the City of Windsor a major chemical plant and more than a thousand jobs, business groups say.
Ontario's Premier, Minister of Health, and Chief Medical Officer of Health on their way to press conference. I could not find our Death Reaper scythe, so had to arm CMOH with just a letter.
Disappointed after press conference? Here's what you can do:
1. Enter your postal code to confirm your riding:
2. Enter riding name to check polling:
3. Support party w/best chance of beating these cons:
If "70 children in hospital with covid in Ontario" is just a statistic, can we focus on the tragedy of a single child in hospital with covid in Ontario?
@FashionableRes1
@CutieCircle
I think this may have to do with NOT having as much of an optimism bias, i.e., everything will turn out fine, without my having to do anything at all.
@MalakaGharib
"... when his measures are unnecessary — for example, when he wears a mask outdoors and no one is around. When I bring it up, he gets defensive."
Maybe it's just easier to get a mask on before heading out, instead of putting it on as people approach.
Ever thought of that?

funneling your tax dollars into increased profits to his donors.
If you think he cares about seniors (or anyone actually), you haven't been paying attention.
Nursing home chains with some of the highest COVID death rates will reap big financial rewards under the Ford government’s $6.4-billion expansion of the province’s long-term-care system — much more than non-profit and city-run homes with lower death rates.
The world's hottest man of 2022. In response to offer to evacuate him, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, "The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride.” Apparently, he also won 2006 Ukraine's Dancing w/ the Stars. Take that, shirtless-selfie Putin.
@TRyanGregory
Sending your kid into school with an Aranet4 CO2 could very well break a parent.
Regarding room that regularly exceeds 1800ppm since September:
"Health and Safety" committee chair:
1) "I've never had to worry about CO2 in past 20 yrs".
2) "The pandemic is over at this school."
@ccleighton
Really confused here - if Doug Ford believes that his mandate letters will keep him from being re-elected, why does his refusal to reveal them keep him from being re-elected?
Many of my very-educated colleagues do not get that:
1. Progressive vote splitting will lead to a
#ThugFord
majority.
2. Keeping PC to minority will give progressive parties chance to form coalition.
3. I target my non-downtown colleagues and send them to
Would more people keep their masks on if they knew:
1. They can catch Covid multiple times, and
2. With each additional infection, they increase their chances of having long covid?
Interim leader Candice Bergen, pictured here having friendly pizza with the protesters in the downtown occupation zone, accuses Trudeau of "escalating" the situation by "name calling."
Retweet if you're in as much awe as I am of Canada's Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland
@cafreeland
: "If your truck is at the blockades, your corporate accounts will be frozen, your insurance will suspended. Send your rigs home."
#IStandWithTrudeau
Crowdfunding platforms like GoFundMe and GiveSendGo will have to report FINTRAC,
@cafreeland
says; banks will be require to suspend accounts linked to protests w/o court order. "This about following the money," she says.
So while I'm pissed that I'm poop-positive despite an elastomeric 100% of my time in public indoor spaces (separate thread needed to describe where it fell short)...
I'm grateful for a very awesome doctor + pharmacist, AND the community here where I learned about all this.

BREAKING: Ontario Premier Doug Ford was snowmobiling on Feb 5, as the City of Ottawa was under siege and dealing with an insurrection.
The premier acknowledged that he was at the cottage.
#onpoli
What we've seen so far:
- Arrests are being made as protesters kneel, lie down in front of police lines
- Ottawa police reporting that protesters putting kids in between lines
- Some protesters, families, leave peacefully after negotiations.
Since finally testing (poop) positive on a rapid test, I can tell you that I'm less inclined to read about all the diseases I'm about to get.
At this point, the more effective message is "avoid reinfection, including by other viruses", and not, "you are already so screwed."
Continuation of kid's school CO2 saga: The school finally installed some Aranet4's, but as close to ceiling as possible (CO2 is heavier than air, so readings are lower up there).
And displays are facing into the wall so no one in the room can see them.
@DavidElfstrom
@joeyfox85
@CineplexMovies
My kid went to your theater with school.
As CO2 >1600ppm, kid went to washroom, then watched movie from hallway, but returned to get stuff and was trapped at seat for a 10-min discussion, where CO2 reached 2198.
I hear you're making people lower their masks? Why?
@TheDailyShow
In other news, Canadian anti-vax inciter Chris Sky is believed to be secretly vaccinated himself. The vaccine will save his life. All other lives are just collateral damage to him.
Heroes of Ottawa: Zexi Li and lawyer Paul Champ, for filing class action with Ontario Superior Court of Justice to silence incessant honking during occupation.
Two options that led to >100,000 new daily Ontario Covid infections:
1. Doug Ford + too stupid to foresee this, now too embarrassed to reverse course on mask mandates etc.
2. Doug Ford + planned this.
Neither good.
To help you visualize 100,000 people:
I'm not too worried about ending up in hospital etc., but I don't want to feel the way I do for months or more.
I opted for the Metformin-long-covid-prevention protocol linked.
The study has small sample size + I quite don't fit target demographic.

@CovidCanada1
I'm sorry to hear this - we've also gotten it despite wearing elastos at all times indoors. Sometimes they fail.
That you've avoided it for this long is nothing to dismiss - your family would likely be worse off were it not for your efforts!
@RevivalCare
When Doug Ford promises you a hospital bed (and access to medication that you can't actually have)... Don't drink the Kool-Aid (or the flat buck-a-beer).
Those of us who actually work in ICUs know that ramping up to 3000 beds is not only impossible, but a dangerous thing to say.
It provides false reassurance that we have the person power to manage a surge of that size.
Also keep in mind that ~30% of COVID ICU patients die.
@FourWinns298
@CineplexMovies
Yeah, weird, do you need to match the patron's face to a photo on the ticket?
There's no photo on the ticket, you say?
Then what on earth are you doing?
Shortly after Michael Melling became head of CTV News, he raised questions about host Lisa LaFlamme’s hair. According to a senior CTV official who was present at the meeting, Mr. Melling asked who had approved the decision to “let Lisa’s hair go grey.”
First-blush story from me: “Mayor Olivia Chow” — a shocking and impossible-sounding phrase only months ago when John Tory cruised to a third term — is Toronto’s new reality after voters signaled they want a dramatic new direction for the ailing city.
p.s. Please do not feed the trolls - I've already hidden and blocked one, but they are sneaky.
If you respond to them, it makes it harder/impossible? for me to hide their comments.
If they are not bots anyhow, they may as well be since they're beyond salvation. Save yourself.
I felt like crap
So did a RAT
Swabbed all over
Didn’t show Covid
So wait few days..
I feel like crap
So did a RAT
Swabbed all over
Doesn’t show Covid
It would be nice
if I knew why
I feel like crap
Not ER-worth crap
But aren’t you glad
I don’t often tweet
RAT-inspired crap
Some of you may wonder, ew, why not just stay home and call it a day (or week or more)?
It's because to get Covid-specific treatment (at least where I am), you need a positive test.
Gratefully, I have a doctor who has kept up w/studies and is open minded enough to let me.

Very pleased with myself for finally finding a good reuse for the aluminum nose strip inside masks.
The one shown on left is from a 3M AURA.
It beats rubber bands that disintegrate over time. It’s also tidier than other twist ties since the material is so much more pliable!
@xtinexoop
@e_evison
I had an opportunity to handle an exit window (not in an emergency). People should demonstrate ability to open and manipulate these surprisingly heavy things before being allowed to sit there.
My doctor also warned me that side effects may exceed possible benefits, so to stop if they get unmanageable.
But I'd rather feel like crap (pun intended) for 2 weeks to reduce chances of feeling like crap for much longer.
Also had awesome pharmacist who knew about the study!

@LSequelae
I didn't think of that. :) When she said that CO2 levels in her office were 200 something - I said, if that's what it's reading, your CO2 monitor is not working.
Politicians: "We need to learn to live w/the virus."
What they mean: Our policies will infect, disable and kill more of you than before.
If you're ok w/that, you likely don't think it will affect you/those you care about. Life doesn't quite work that way.
With a Lego lag, it's getting hard to keep up with all the ridiculous stuff going on this week:
"Police are escorting this structure to the parking lot on Coventry Road beside the baseball stadium. It was built by convoy supporters..in Confederate Park.."
@nsedef
Yes, vigilance, and past knowledge and experience in general certainly help. There was another paper that mentioned those in the most obvious occupations like emergency responders.
@aaronhoyland
What they also don't realize is that, it's not always clear who exactly needs protecting until it's too late. Lots of "perfectly healthy" people have been completely leveled by covid, vaccinated or not.
