University of Miami continues to monitor Tropical Storm Ian, max winds of 45 mph, and located approx. 800 miles SSE of Miami. Forecast track has shifted west & favorably for S. FL.

A significant earthquake occured south of Cuba earlier this afternoon. There are unconfirmed reports of shaking being felt in high rise buildings in Downtown Miami & Dadeland areas. No impacts to any UM campus. All classes and operations continue on normal schedules.

UM Emergency Management is monitoring recently formed Subtropical Storm Nicole. The system will continue to be closely followed and all operations of the University continue on normal schedules.
Subtropical Storm Nicole has formed in the southwest Atlantic. It is forecast to move towards Florida over the coming days. The main impacts will be poor marine conditions, beach erosion and coastal flooding, periods of heavy rain, and gusty winds.
Based on the current forecast there is a 20-40% chance of Miami-Dade County experiencing gusts to tropical storm force as we experience the outer bands from Milton tomorrow into early Thursday.
11 PM Update – Hurricane Ian is currently located 175 miles WSW of Miami and has maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. We continue to very closely track Ian’s progress and expect tropical storm conditions overnight through tomorrow.
The track for Ian continues to shift east. This has implications locally for impacts from surge and winds. Stay up to date with the local forecast, and heed the guidance from local officials.
