Taking a small moment to remember the daughter of an uneducated single mother, granddaughter of immigrants, now has two WSJ bylines, a NYT byline and a Pulitzer project 🙏
Sorry to repeat on all the platforms, but this week I opened a scholarship fund for single parents studying communications at the College of Staten Island. I hope it will help diversify the next generation of journalists.
It's in honor of my kind, courageous mother, who wanted to go to college, but took care of me instead, even after her passing. Anyone can contribute by selecting designation "other: Maria Colicchio Fund"
If you need something fun to read, I wrote this a month ago but it just published. Come for the vhs swaps, stay for the artist couple who removed their clothes to house more tapes
My unpopular view is that journalist should have to volunteer in the communities they report on to understand the nuances of those communities and to do more good than harm

Non tech folks have been asking me about tesla stock and wondering when it would catch up to the real life terrible management we see displayed daily. People are noticing.

Something nagging at me is the crowd saying Gen Z all voted, we are saved. Seems like a way to take the work off of our own shoulders and just assume the next generation will fix things. Also assumes that there’s not racism and classism in that generation as well
I'm hiring a community editor to work with local communities. If going out into the world and meeting audiences is your jam, apply.
Examples: Coasters in cafes that link to food guides, print voters guides for unhoused people, reader listening sessions

I was orphaned at 19 and had to organize an estate with no will. Now I walk everyone I know through estate planning. I’m obsessed. I am sorry you’re going through this. Let me know if I can help.
A take of what journalism might look like if we didn't overvalue skills you learn in academia (like boardroom posture & double spacing) and instead placed value on street smarts and the kind of quick thinking that comes w/blue collar backgrounds
A big reason why people dressed better in the past is because there were good, local stores with knowledgeable sales associates. You could go to just a couple of stores and build your whole wardrobe, as well as be taught how to put together an outfit for any occasion. 🧵
Love waking up to special delivery of my hard work on understanding what ingredients can tell us about the migration patterns of Italian Americans in

Of all the inconsistencies in their spiel, the IVF and the heat thing really set me off. HEAT in valley forge in the winter is not a luxury and they cherry pick that among the other luxuries they have… how?
I stopped at UPenn encampment yesterday on my way to pick up my kids, and what I saw was peaceful, quiet, students were working, all very different to what you get from mainstream media. Some may disagree with them, but these kids dont deserve rubber bullets & police repression.
When protests are not about actually explaining your cause or trying to engage journalists who are there to listen.

no one has brought up the anxiety social stats causes in young people and how this is just another way the always-online will measure themselves
Reading CNNs take on UPenn and its wild, I had a very different experience. I was welcomed into the encampment, took photos, spoke to people. I did have my press pass on.
When things feel out of control I like to be reminded of work that can be done in your own community to bring back power. Here are some orgs I volunteer with or donate to:

Ive done this flight a few times and will say if you are able to upgrade, its worth it. I've had back pains for weeks after sitting in those flights for awhile. Bring pain relievers.

An option: Shampoo bars don’t work on my crazy hair but I found a refill store near me and I refill shampoo into jars. Bringing linen produce bags to the store has helped too. I did try a bamboo toothbrush and floss but my dentist vetoed.
