Facebook’s banning of Donald Trump is akin to the phone company or a cable monopoly banning a party leader back in the day. It’s a major partisan intervention—an attempt to control political discourse in a democracy at the level of communications infrastructure.

If you're a Trump voter & you see WaPo's "conservatives" are Michael Gerson, Jennifer Rubin, etc., would you trust anything the paper says?

If liberals really believe America is a fascist, racist state, shouldn’t they be discouraging immigrants from coming here? Who ever heard of a repressive state where refugees were coming in, not trying to get the hell out?

No follow-up on the Covington/Phillips story can omit the role of social-media activists & blue-checkmark pundits in creating a misleading narrative in the first place. Biased opinion drove this story—but what are the odds bias against white kids in MAGA hats will get examined?

One effect of today’s pantomime sack of Rome will be to limit citizens’ access to legislators & the Capitol all the more. Bad for the public; not exactly good for a representative institution whose approval ratings often dip into single digits, either. Authority drifts elsewhere.

Phillips singled this boy out from the crowd—he was just standing there as Phillips turns his way—and stood right in front of him bashing his drum in his face. Phillips later claims *he* was scared—and media uncritically accepts that claim in defiance of the footage. Even now!

This is an excellent way for academic pseudo-scholars to discredit themselves. Trump jokes he’ll improve the country so much Christians will no longer feel a need to vote. Tenured leftists in perpetual panic pretend this means he’s going to cancel elections.

Media: this should be *the* A1 story. I have studied dictatorship for decades and this is it-"you won't have to vote anymore." Trump will never leave office if he wins in November.

Excellent, deep, and sobering report. “The numbers in Iraq are especially stark: Before the American invasion, as many as 1.4 million Christians lived in the country. Today, fewer than 250,000 remain—an 80 percent drop in less than two decades.”

Today, The Atlantic published a piece I have been working on for a long time, about one of the most powerful stories of our time: The decimation of Christianity in the Middle East. This is tragic, on its face. But it's also devastating for democracy. 1/x

The signatories are such a potlatch of crazies who’ve anathematized one another as Commies or fascists just yesterday that it’s hilarious. And *they’re* going to deliver “liberal democracy”? Didn’t half of them try that in Afghanistan? And the other half denounced them.

Protestant attentiveness to respectability has its admirable side, but it’s also often hypocritical. There’s nothing at all godly about Trump’s enemies. Their respectability is a whitewash.

The Afghan War was lost the minute the mission became nation-building. Biden has screwed up everything else, but he's right to follow through on leaving now:

Voters chose Trump over Cheney? Thank God—after all, the Cheney dynasty was one of the best reasons to support Trump. If you don’t want Trump, get rid of the Cheneys, Bushes, and all their ilk first. Trump is the nemesis that arises from the establishment’s hubris.

For the life of me I do not understand why evangelicals’ political support for a president who delivers for them politically is supposed to be surprising. The crazy thing is supporting nice guys who don’t deliver.

Another thing I would've loved Hitchens to have lived to write about is the evangelical embrace of Trump. That would've been such a juicy target. Hard to imagine he'd have resisted it.

Capitalism in the 19th century stood in contrast to agrarian society and the ancien regime. In the 20th century, it stood in contrast to Communism. It lacks a defining point of contrast today—the only competing system, Chinese-style managerialism, is itself labeled capitalist.
