One of my greatest concerns during #FIONA is going to be the #CansoCauseway . (red circle) A track just to the west of the Causeway is going to result in a massive surge in the Strait. Also remember: most of NS's power comes from Cape Breton via 3 transmission lines (yellow line).

Our "Frankencane" is looking more and more like a real hurricane with every passing hour. It is trying to close off an eyewall, and is likely a fully subtropical storm by now. A full transition to tropical storm or weak hurricane wouldn't surprise me in the least. #NSStorm

Here are a few of my thoughts re: the upcoming #hurricane season, sorted by area: 1) Likely very inactive, due to shear and dry air from the expected El Nino. 2) The Gulf isn't really affected by ENSO, so a weak tropical entity could get fairly strong here. (1/x)

Our little low is certainly looking more #subtropical now than yesterday, as it's become increasingly detached from frontal boundaries. If convection can sustain itself or increase, subtropical cyclogenesis could follow soon.

If you live in Nova Scotia, especially #Halifax and eastwards, the winds will likely not exceed 80 km/h, and biggest hazard with #LEE will likely be high surf and possibly storm surge. This will start Friday morning and continue on into Saturday night. Be mindful. #NSStorm

Looks like our African Easterly Wave in the MDR has a vortmax near its northern end and is firing some convection very close to it. In order for this to become a tropical cyclone, it needs to keep this up for 12-24 hours and make a surface low. #HurricaneSeason

@CBCNS We should also have a provincial passenger train serving Sydney, Halifax, Wolfville, Fredericton, Moncton, and everywhere in between. Rail is far more sustainable than air travel, IMO.

It looks increasingly likely that we still have one more tropical cyclone left in the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, coming from a Central American Gyre in around 8-10 days. If it forms and gets a name, it'll be #VINCE . Pretty impressive, considering we have a strong El Nino.

Regardless of whether #Barry becomes a hurricane or not, it'll be one heck of a soaker. Over *400 MILLIMETERS* of rain could fall in the hardest hit areas over the next 5 days or so. Not just at the point of landfall, but far inland. That's the greatest danger here.

Here's #LEE at landfall from the 06Z GFS and Euro. Impacts will be most pronounced in Maine, Cape Cod, New Brunswick, and western NS. #PEI , #Halifax and east should be relatively OK. Keep in mind, the windfield is large, so don't focus on the exact centre. #NSStorm #NBStorm

From @CBmesonet , here are the peak wind gusts for yesterday and today's storm. As I expected, the strongest gusts were inland, away from the coast and the cooler capping marine layer. Good example of how mesonets can help improve local forecasts in similar future setups. #NSStorm

That's a pretty major change in the ridging at 6 days between the 12Z (left) and 00Z (right) CMC. The 12Z run features a much faster, more progressive flow, with a weak ridge and small shortwave. Such a pattern would favour #FRANKLIN staying well offshore. #NSStorm #NLStorm

@crownweather @crankywxguy Aircraft recon is the most reliable wind data there is. Going against it is a very foolish thing to do. He did this downplaying with #Laura too. I think he doesn't quite understand the nature of TC winds and that they are gustier than those in a typical nor'easter.

I know that this is nearly a week out, however, this is hard to ignore... There's growing multi-model consensus that next Saturday morning will be extremely cold across the Maritime provinces. Cold enough in fact that some all-time records could fall... #NSStorm #NBStorm #PEStorm

It does appear that there's been a tiny shift eastward with #LEE over the past day or so. A landfall in Maine looks less likely, a landfall in New Brunswick is still possible, but SW NS looks most likely now. This will not change impacts too much due to Lee's size. #NSStorm

There goes most of #LEE 's central convection. I think he's passing over the wake of #FRANKLIN . He will get 1 more chance to fire a burst of convection over the Gulf Stream to slow the inevitable extratropical transition. Tropical or not - impacts won't change. #NSStorm #NBStorm

Old #90L is starting to lost steam, however, it's still got some convection and evident banding on its eastern side. Those rainbands are now affecting Port-Aux-Basques. #NLStorm

Never laugh off a #HurricaneSeason until it's over. The 12Z ECENS are looking quite active over the next 10 days with #HELENE , #98L , #99L , another TC near the Lesser Antilles, and maybe even another from a CAG. To think that 2 weeks ago we were all saying how dead the season was.

Clearly #LARRY isn't going down without a fight. There is still deep convection over his eye, despite being over 23C water. Probably still able to feed that warm core from the Gulf Stream.

Where is #FIONA going to make landfall? Guidance is growing increasingly confident that landfall will occur somewhere between Canso and St. Peters. Worse yet, the storm will stall over Cape Breton for 12-18 hours and weaken only slowly. #NSwx #NLwx #PEwx #NBwx

Taking a look at the latest climate modelling, I am seeing some patterns. 1) The Caribbean is dry. No surprise given +ENSO. 2) Lots of tropical waves north of the Antilles. 3) Gulf of Mexico is a wildcard. 4) Generally above average rainfall off the US East Coast #HurricaneSeason

The long-range GEFS is all over that ridge over Atlantic Canada. It really doesn't want to knock it over for over a MONTH! Note: even if the "big picture" like this ends up verifying, doesn't mean you can't get a big snowstorm... it's just a lot harder.

Invest #92L looks like it's becoming more convectively active, impressive especially considering it's near DMIN. That should help it build a closed surface circulation, which should favour tropical cyclogenesis. DMAX might just be enough for it to become a TD.

Looks like #LEE might finally be starting to re-intensify after a battle with shear and dry air yesterday. In the last 20 minutes or so, a vortical hot tower has wrapped around the northern eyewall. If the storm can keep firing these upshear, further intensification is likely.

Our little wannabe subtropical storm is firing convection around its low level centre. It is currently struggling a bit with southerly shear, which is injecting dry mid-level air into it -- hence why the convection doesn't surround the centre yet. 1/x

#BERYL is trying to open up her eye -- see the vortical hot towers over the eyewall. Looks like she's a night owl. Further rapid intensification is extremely likely at this point, and I see little to stop her from reaching major hurricane status.

Say what you will about the RGEM, but I'd say it didn't do a half-bad job predicting the convection of our potential tropical system 24, or even 48 hours out...
