Just heard back from a job I applied to, letting me know that the job "does not come with a traditional salary," instead, I need to "create a team of partners who are willing to support me financially as the source of funding" 🤯 What kind of new dystopian BS is this now?? 😭
Vulnerable confession: I've been having a rough time lately. Been unemployed for 9 months, haven't had any irl friends in two years, currently living in the mess of a fixer-upper home in a town where I don't know anyone. Life can get lonely
Well, this took off overnight! Nothing to promote, but if you have a PAID remote/traveling job available in the fields of archaeology, history, religion, heritage, museums, education, video games, or new media, you know where to find me! 😆
@BretDevereaux
Seeing it's with a religious non-profit, the liturgy example is probably exactly it! Except this is a full-time project manager position 🙄
@inkhat
No, it's an actual (religious) non-profit organization. I think they want you to solicit your local church members or something, to donate to the cause, so they can pay for your salary 😒
Tired of hearing that archaeology/history needs to connect more with the public. We already have museums,open-site days,publications in glossy magazines,YouTube and TikTok channels,talks at your local church group,popular books,national heritage days, etc. What else can be done?
@isaacsoon2
I had never heard of such a thing. Why do you post the job on LinkedIn then? The email said that they expect the formation of this team to take 1-2 years before you can start the actual job. Wild
I've been watching the Lego Colosseum on Classics Twitter with much envy, but finally, us biblical people have a model of our own. Behold, Lego First-Century Jerusalem!
I also want people to know I have an amazing and supportive husband, so I'm not totally alone! He's the reason I currently live in the US and try to make it work in Delaware, Ohio. But he has family and travels a lot for work, and I need to find my own community here :)
Wow people, I've been so overwhelmed by your support! 🫣🥰 Thank you so much to everyone who sent me a message or like, it really means a lot to me!
I will try to get back to everyone who DM'ed me, but it might take a second! ❤️
Ok people, I have been playing

So, I found my first post-PhD job in the humanities. This is what it took:

You'll all be glad to know I just signed up for a Meetup event in July! Thank you all for letting me know about the existence of this app; next month I'm going to a wine and street concert event! ☺️
Now that I have signed the offer letter, I can officially announce that I have accepted my first full-time position!
Starting in July, I will be the new curator at the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in New Orleans, Louisiana! 🥳

Soooooo... this tweet gained more traction than I thought it would! I have nothing to promote, but if you liked it I just want to say: please support your local archaeology! Visit a museum, give a donation, get a magazine subscription, etc; it all helps to keep us going!
As I consider myself a public scholar, I have decided to put my entire dissertation online, as an open-access source. Feel free to use any information from this project as you see fit, as long as you cite me! You can find it here:
Good morning and welcome to all my new followers! Just letting you know that I mostly tweet about religious archaeology, video games, heritage, and the broader humanities. If that's new to you, it might get a bit wild 😅
@InsightIncMiami
"Period of wandering"; that is def how I feel right now! My main interest in life is archaeology/history, so I spent my entire life studying, pursuing degrees and internships, and eventually getting the PhD. Now I'm done with that and I have no idea where to go from here 😅
The court confirms that the 32 ancient manuscripts the Museum of the Bible bought from Oxford professor Dirk Obbink were indeed stolen from the British Egyptian Exploration Society, and were not his to sell. They have been awarded $7 million, the price they paid for the items
But the truth is, in a capitalist society, the study of history doesn't matter. Politicians are not interested in our knowledge and corporations can't use us to sell a product.We are "noble, but economically redundant." So, we're never going to get a say at the table that matters
Have you played Assassin's Creed? Of course you have, so please take a minute to help researcher Rose Campbell, who is studying gender and gender representation in the AC games. She needs your feedback and it should only take you *10 minutes*!
GREAT NEWS:my work visa has been approved!!I still have to wait until I get my actual permit in the mail,but I should be back at the museum in a couple of weeks!Thank you to everyone who supported me, messaged me, or offered to help: I really appreciate you all caring about me!🥰
This is utter nonsense. So any place that has an altar and some depictions of animals and is on the same continent as Mt Ararat can be the site of Noah's ark now? 🤔
“Why would the WEF want to prevent excavation of Gobekli Tepe?”
Answer: It may corroborate the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark was actually true.
Sound far fetched? These 6 points may blow your mind👇🏻
📍Genesis 8:20 - Upon leaving the Ark, Noah built an altar where he sacrificed
Do these 16ft Statues depict the Biblical Giants known as Nephilim??
“We even saw Giants there, sons of Anak, who come from Nephilim. Next to them we felt like Grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them” -Numbers 13:33
…These statues were found in Mesopotamia (Biblical Iraq)👇🏻👀
I swear this is one of the reasons I feel so isolated in this country. I used to spend so much time wandering around farmers markets, flea markets, public art performances, etc. Now I walk for half an hour to the local coffee shop and I see like 2 people outside
Why do American cities feel less "alive" than their European counterparts?
It's because of something called the "missing middle".
A century ago, American cities looked completely different... (thread) 🧵
Week 1 of the semester and have my first student telling me their parent just passed away because of COVID. How to accommodate for this? What do I even say? Meanwhile, we are up to 3 "clusters" in the dorm halls at UNC. It feels so surreal

Two years I tweeted a picture that celebrated archaeology and went viral. I was even interviewed by a Finnish journalist because of it😅Man, I hope this stays possible under the new Twitter...

So, I am now officially looking for a job! What I seek: a position that is related to archaeology, the Ancient Near East, Judaism, Christianity, Heritage Management, Public Humanities, Digital Humanities, Video Games, or Education. 1/
@cwjones89
@BretDevereaux
I understand this *maybe* for missionary work, but this was a project management position in religious publishing for Pete's sake😒
So, last week I got the news I didn't get the dream job after 3 rounds of interviews. I've been feeling a mix of disappointment, frustration, self doubt, and existential anxiety. Just wanted to share this moment of sadness and if you're in the same boat, solidarity 🫂
Graduating with your PhD is so weird. Like, you don't get a congrats email or confirmation email from anyone. You think you graduated cause you applied for it, but how can you tell? There's no email from the system, or your department, or your advisor.. so I think I'm done?
My students at the correctional facility only have access to a pitiful library. One student who is writing his paper on biblical archeology is literally using a book from 1916🤦♀️If I would set up a GoFundMe page, would people donate to purchase new books? 1/2
People, thank you so much for all the wonderful social suggestions! but I should probably also say I don't have a driver's license and I can't get to Columbus 🫣 I know, I know! That one is def on me, and I'm working on it: I just got my temps! 🤞
Seems like many people on the internet think that international students can just pack up and leave for a semester. Most of us grad students live off campus: we are paying rent, utilities, car payments, etc. We have furniture, pets, and partners
The way new items are unlocked is by receiving loans from other museums, the home museum where these items rightly belong. For example, more Egyptian items are unlocked by satisfying the conditions of the curator from an Ancient Egyptian museum in Cairo
Every single one of my archaeology friends spend considerable time at their job organizing public events,children's activities,going to schools,giving free talks,etc.We all do the best we can. I mean, I never see bio-engineering at my local science fair, but archaeology is there!
Super excited to announce that the issue of Near Eastern Archaeology that I have been working on as the guest editor has finally been published! 😃 It's an issue entirely dedicated to the ancient near east and

I hate the phrase "leaving academia" when all you mean is people with a PhD taking a job. Not all of us go to grad school to become a professor, djees...
The world’s oldest and only intact Roman body armour, believed to have been worn by a legionary sacrificed by triumphant Germanic warriors in 9CE, is to go on display for the first time.
Now that I'm about to start a career as museum curator, it would be useful to have a network of curator and museum friends who would be willing to talk to me whenever I have questions. Anyone willing to talk to me every now and then?

I quit my job today.
More info and thoughts to follow soon (probably too many :p), but for now, I just want to say that the role was just not a good fit for me. No idea what will come next, but my plan is to take some time and reflect on what it is that I actually want...
Look, I want a job "in the industry." I'm ready to start making that extra money and applying my skills to positions outside of the academy. Now show me the kinds of jobs I should apply to. I have an MA in Archaeology of Ancient Near East and a PHD in Biblical Religions. Go!!
Great news! After 6 years of organizing, my ASOR session on Archaeology and Video Games has officially been approved to become a standing session! Slightly expanded to Archaeology and New Media, the session will now be a part of the program, forever 🥰
Omg, someone came up to me after my talk and said: "Every year, there's one paper that makes me see things differently, one paper that stands out and blows my mind. This year, that paper is yours"
😭😭😭
Excited to confirm that I will be teaching a university class at a minimum security prison this Fall semester! Does anyone have any experience with that and have some useful advice for me?

My Horvat Kur excavation family gave me book money as a PhD graduation gift and I was finally able to buy the book I've been wanting for over a decade. Thank you so much guys!!🥰🥰
So much happened this year, but just in time for 2023, I finally received copies of my first co-edited volume! ♥️ Grateful to my colleagues Dennis Mizzi and Matt Grey for all their support and I can't wait to see this in the library ☺️ happy New Year!
You know, if I never do anything else in life, I got myself a PhD, I have a book with my name on the cover, I guest-edited a glossy magazine, and I have a standing session at an academic archaeological society. I made my legacy ☺️

I finally received my student feedback and their experiences with using Assassin's Creed in the classroom. Some observations: "Being able to experience the ancient world in first person made the facts I was learning in class more visible, and I think I was able to understand the

Why is it that archaeological/biblical scammers can get a platform and thousands of dollars payment to spread their conspiracies, but serious scientists/scholars get ignored? Like, this organization 👇is talking at our local fairgrounds all week and I just.. 🤦♀️
To all my new followers, just so you know, I mostly tweet about biblical archaeology, archaeology and history in video games (archaeogaming), and my life navigating academia and the museum world. If any of that is your jam, stick around! 🤗
I'm moving on from my current job for several reasons, but one is that I'm totally burned out. I went from applying to grad school, to moving to the US, 7 years of PhD, including several years of teaching non-stop, to job hunting, a wedding, moving to a new city, and starting a
