This led to lackluster projects and budget cuts, such as the infamous EPCOT refurbishment, Avengers Campus, and the 50th anniversary of WDW. Having visited the 50th myself, it was indeed an incredibly uninspiring event that we will remember for years to come 6/22

Let's go back all the way to February 2020. Bob Chapek became the CEO of The Walt Disney Company after being the chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts since 2015. A few weeks later, the infamous COVID-19 pandemic started. All of the parks and resorts closed indefinitely 2/22

In the period of 2020 to 2022, the company did not give the Parks and Resorts business the budget to develop well-conceived projects plus there was the Lake Nona disaster, forcing a major part of the Imagineering team to leave the company 5/22

Flashing forward to November 2022, Iger replaced Chapek again. Iger promised to 'fix' the company and to undo the mistakes Chapek made during his tenure (even though most of these decisions were pitched by Iger). One of the fixes was to restart Imagineering once again 8/22

We are now in 2024 and can expect some announcements regarding the parks at the upcoming D23 in August, such as new details on some of the upcoming lands and attractions at parks worldwide (Paris, Orlando, Anaheim, etc) 14/22

Sadly, the service proved to be a very costly endeavor and turned into a financial nightmare. As TWDC kept pouring a lot of money in their streaming business, they took a lot of the profits of the park trying to get a break-even for the service, hurting the parks business 4/22

But it will most likely still be a bit too early for some of the bigger things that are coming our way in the coming years. Disney knows they need new things, but they're also very much aware that they need to deliver top-notch experiences 15/22

And that they're still far ahead of Universal, so they assume that fans will think it was worth the wait once the announcements are made. Another important thing is timing. Yes, Universal is coming to Europe, but it will take many years before their park is able to open 17/22

With the parks being one of the largest generators of revenue for TWDC, Disney knew they had a big problem. Luckily, they just had the most successful launch of a streaming service ever in 2019. With Disney+, the company was certain they could offset the losses of the parks 3/22

After several evaluations of the next additions that were planned to Disney parks worldwide, it was decided to put all of the projects on hold and re-evaluate them. Some projects were canceled, some were reworked, and some stayed the same. This process took a few months 10/22

One might wonder if the concept of keeping this park open during the works was a big mistake on the management side of DLP. As a ticket to this park for a single day costs between €80 and €90, this is definitely not the premium Disney experience a guest would expect 🫢
