This event calls us as a Church and a nation to address the structural injustices that are deeply rooted in our nation's life. The fact that more than 1,000 African Americans were killed by police in 2019 must lead us to shine an urgent light on racism w/in law enforcement.
Another immigrant likely in his teens has died in his effort to find a place of refuge in the US. He was found where he collapsed in the desert -heat stroke. Since no relatives were known I was called to give the Ok for ongoing efforts to save his life. He died this morning. 🙏🏼
I'm very grateful to the EPPD for their prompt & professional work in catching the thief who broke into my house on Tuesday!
They found some of the items stolen, including rosaries, holy medals, pixes & two relics!
No luck yet on the coin collection I had from my childhood...
I am proud to announce The Border Refugee Assistance Fund!
Many have asked what they could do to assist families who have fled to our Border seeking refuge. These families are forced to wait in Juarez w/nothing but the clothes on their back. Please help!

For a Catholic does one of these actions disqualify the other? Anyone who knows me knows that I have knelt in prayer before abortion clinics regularly throughout my life. Kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament daily is where I am convicted of the need to serve all the oppressed.
This morning I joined a group of priests from our Diocese as we prayed the Stations at Mt. Crist Rey. We may not be able to celebrate Mass publicly, but we can certainly pray for our people.
Here in El Paso we are remembering in a special way on All Souls Day the souls of children like Jaquelyn, Filipe from Guatemala and many many others who have died in their effort to find a place of peace and security in our blest country.
We prayed for them at the Border Mass
Twitter friends: I need some suggestions. There is a great young man in Dallas just Graduating from 8th Grade who has been diagnosed with Leukemia the third time. He needs a miracle!
Can you suggest some holy people in the Canonization process who need a miracle to move forward?
Great news for Palma family! They fled from horrors in Honduras. The youngest, Sofia, has a heart condition that had already led to a 'minor' heart attack. Waiting Juarez under 'Remain in Mexico' they survived 2 kidnapping attempts. But Fri. they were allowed to cross! Thank God
I am on my way today to Honduras right now for a meeting of Bishops from Central America with a focus on immigration.
We all want immigration to be a more orderly safe process. The key to that is to address Root Causes which force people to flee. We need to work together on this.
US plans to deport Venezuelans? When our government acknowledges the exceedingly dangerous conditions in a country such as Venezuela and less than three weeks later begins forcibly returning people to that country, we bear witness to the paradox of our broken immigration system.
Please join me in praying for the safety, fortitude and freedom of my brother bishop, Rolando Alvarez, and for all the people of Nicaragua. I am grateful for Bishop Alvarez' heroic witness and the love he shows for his people as a minister of Jesus Christ.
“He did it again!” Pope Francis has found a way to reach beyond the walls of the church to give people an insight into the way the teachings of Christ speak to their fundamental goodness and deepest longings.
God bless!
I dream of the day we can set political calculations aside & put in place a safe, humane, welcoming system to receive immigrants at the border—a system that respects the God-given rights and dignity of asylum seekers & all those forced to migrate.

Here is my statement on the latest hardhearted and unjust policy initiative of our government against desperate helpless people at the doorway of our nation.
You never know what friends you might run into at the US Bishops’ Meeting. It’s always a joy to encounter Sr. Norma Pimentel! She has become such a great face of the Church’s love and care for the poor, our immigrant brothers and sisters who have fled to our door.

“Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and who write oppressive decrees,
Depriving the needy of judgment and robbing my people’s poor of their rights,.” (Is. 10:1-2)
Praying for the 39 lives lost in Ciudad Juárez, my brother bishop Don Guadalupe, and all those who bear the trauma of our torturous systems of immigration enforcement. Their lives were lost in Lent. May the Resurrection inspire us to build a more just world with a place for all.
At sunset this evening some holy women from our barrio came to pray at our Pastoral Center shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
It has become another place of prayer for all victims of the Mass shooting here in El Paso.
Augustine nails it!
"But men are hopeless creatures, and the less they concentrate on their own sins, the more interested they become in the sins of others. They seek to criticize, not to correct. Unable to excuse themselves, they are ready to accuse others."
Aug., Sermo 19)
“If you wish to receive mercy, be merciful..; forgive whatever has been done against you; give of your abundance. Of whose possessions do you give, if not from his? If you were to give of your own, it would be largess; but since you give of his, it is restitution.” St. Augustine
Update on Jude, the 14 yr. old fighting leukemia for 3rd time: The chemo killed the cancer cells but it killed the good cells too. His bone marrow must start producing again before he can receive potentially life-saving CAR-T therapy.
Please redouble prayers for him.
I’m so proud of our priests who are seeking to find any way possible to give signs of our love, support and prayers to medical personnel and first responders!
Several priests from the diocese visited and blessed 3 hospitals, the patients and their staffs in El Paso today. The small cadre of priests will be blessing other hospitals in the coming days.

A great Anniversary to celebrate, 500 years of Faith! And how beautifully Filipinos have lived that Faith and made it their own! They are a gift to the world! Thank you for highlighting that gift, Pope Francis!
We will celebrate w/the Filipino community here next Saturday.
This story came my way this afternoon. The Holy Father is so kind to us here in El Paso. It moves me to want to redouble my efforts on behalf of those who suffer from discrimination and every kind of need.
The name of the young man with Leukemia is Jude. I have known him since his first bout with the disease when he was 5.
You can start praying for him NOW!
Thank you!
I'm on the plane in Rome. Ready to head back to our dear El Paso! These days here at the heartbeat of the Church have been truly some of the most memorable of my life. But it can hardly wait to get back home. Rome is a great place to visit but...(you know how the saying goes)
I am very grateful for the help being offered on a national level by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network.
Legal organization moves to Juárez, El Paso to provide services to immigrants in Mexico via

Anyone who has been to Honduras in recent months knows we are sending innocent people back to one of the most chaotic and dangerous places in the world.
We have clearly lost our moral compass.
I am praising God today for His Faithfulness in my life!
Forty years ago today he confirmed His wondrous call in my life through my Ordination to the Diaconate.
What a journey it has been! Today I am off to Rome in response to an invitation to a conference on human trafficking.
What a great joy! For a bishop it doesn't get any better than this! Tonight I had the privilege to Ordain two priests and a deacon for service in the Diocese of El Paso.
Packed Cathedral! Everyone tuned in, praying and singing with one voice, one heart! Christ in the midst!
“You shall not defraud a poor and needy hired servant, whether he be one of your own countrymen or one of the aliens who live in your communities..” (Deuteronomy 24)
Jude, the 14 yr.
old from Dallas who is fighting the 3rd recurrence of leukemia will soon be receiving a special kind of bone marrow transplant. The donor cells from Germany are in transit by special currier.
Ask the intercession of Arch. Sheen!
Please retweet.
Visited the West Texas Detention facility in Sierra Blanca today and had the opportunity with this ACTS choir to pray with ICE detainees.
Several asked for prayers for their children who were separated from them.
Please pray!
This is what we are sending refugees into under the so-called "Migrant Protection Protocol". This story is not an isolated incident.
Asylum Seeker Denied US Entry by Trump Administration Kidnapped Five Hours After Return to Mexico
Although I am unworthy I pray that I may be "the voice of one crying out in the desert, 'Make straight the way of the Lord...'" (John 1:23) A voice for the voiceless.

in El Paso few years back, what kept entering my mind was, “God is getting ready for something.” I’m grateful for all Catholics and people of good will doing right, but especially for our shepherds on the border. Pray for them every day!
"Of what use is it to weigh down Christ’s table with golden cups, when he himself is dying of hunger? First, fill him when he is hungry; then use the means you have left to adorn his table."
(St. John Chrysostom, Hom. 50:3-4)
Serve the poor first!
Don't give only leftovers!
Twitter friends, I asked you to pray for Jude, a 14 yr. old from Dallas facing his 3rd battle w/leukemia in 9 yrs. You suggested over 100 on path toward sainthood who need miracle to advance. Jude chooses ARCHBISHOP FULTON SHEEN.
Please begin asking him to intercede for a cure!

Good meeting in Ysleta, with Rep. Will Hurd & w/ Tigua Governor, Carlos Hisa and Councilman, Rafael Gomez.
Good discussion on current immigration situation & principals to guide the way forward.
Agreed that separation of families is wrong. Family incarceration not the answer.
Not to be lost from the interview with the Pope celebrating Catholic News Service 100th Anniversary are his very affirming words re: the Church in the US. He called the Church here “alive and vivacious “ He pointed to Catholic schools and our work to help integrate immigrants.
It was so moving to have civic and religious leaders as well as many others from South Texas and beyond praying with us for an end to this terrible epidemic in our El Paso community.
Our South Texas brothers and sisters know what we are going through.
I was glad to join

for coordinating us.
Please, take every precaution against the virus, for everyone’s sake.
Last night's shooting can bring back traumatic memories for our El Paso community.
If you need support, El Paso has a round the clock help line with trained mental health professionals: 915-779-1800.
Let’s be there for one another. United in prayer and solidarity.
In solidarity with our Venezuelan brothers and sisters, we pray for bold action that promotes the right to life and integral human development throughout our hemisphere, relying not on failed policies of the past but forward-looking solutions that advance the common good.
“Not even night should interrupt your duty of mercy. Do not say: ‘Come back and I will give you something tomorrow.’ There should be no delay between your intention and your good deed. Generosity is the one thing that cannot admit of delay.”

Pope Francis departing from our Audience.
I did have the opportunity to greet him and to pass on the holy cards of our two children who died in custody after crossing.
Our first stop in Honduras was to the beautiful Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa, the Patroness of Honduras.
What an honor to celebrate Mass there and to encounter such people of Faith!
Here is a prayer card developed by Jude's family to assist in our prayer for him through the intercession of Venerable Archbishop Sheen.
Join in prayer for this youth, age 14, facing his 3rd recurrence of leukemia. He needs God's intervention!

It was mostly valuable as a connection to my childhood. Some of those coins went back to experiences shared w/my Grandfather when I was 9 years old.
I try to store up treasures in heaven. Nobody can get them there!
Who has described more powerfully the wonder of the Incarnation & Birth of Christ than St. Augustine in today’s Office of Readings?
“Of his own will he was born for us today, in time, so that he could lead us to his Father’s eternity. God became man so that man might become God.”
Wow! All you Catholic Twitter friends are amazing!
In 24 hours after my request for suggestions of a potential special intercessor for Jude, a young man facing his 3rd recurrence of leukemia, you had proposed 89!
Our Church has sinners but it is also loaded with saints!!
Today Jude was able to receive his Car-T treatment; his own re-engineered cells that will hopefully eradicate the leukemia cells.
Please redouble your prayers for him.
Servant of God, Archbishop Sheen, pray for him!
For those who have been praying for Jude Cobler, the 14 yr. old w/3rd recurrence of leukemia: Great news!
Last ditch treatment seems to be working! No signs of disease and his immune system is coming back.
Thanks be to God and the intercession of Archbishop Sheen!
Prayers pls.
Many today don't believe in the existence of a power of evil. I do!
What could be more diabolical than an assault on innocent people as they worship God?
"Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good." (Romans 12:21)
Some other photos from Ciudad Guzman, a colonia (read ‘ghetto’) on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa controlled by gangs, a place that has suffered the loss of 80% of their young males to emigration. Even so, we found people in the Church working to improve the community.
I'm in the procession to bring the body of slain Deputy Sheriff, Peter Herrera to it's final resting place. One hour into the trip we have seen thousands of people along the way paying tribute and a procession so long we cannot see the end of it .
A great tribute!
Psalm 10 in today’s Office of Readings:
“Lord, you hear the prayer of the poor; you strengthen their hearts; you turn your ear to protect the rights of the orphan and oppressed so that mortal man may strike terror no more.”
Please hear their prayer in our day, Lord!
My beloved son,...you may show favor not only to relations and kin, or to the most eminent,...but also to foreigners and to all who come to you...Be merciful to all who are suffering violence..."

My prayers are with the people of Paris and Archbishop Michel Christian Alain Aupetit. I ask the intercession of Notre Dame, Our Lady that the fire at the heart of Paris is contained. God bless the Parisian first responders. I pray for their safety as they put out this fire.
On this Teacher Appreciation Week I am so grateful for the teachers who helped form and inform me!
I am very grateful for the teachers who give themselves so generously for our kids in El Paso!
God bless you!
“You shall not violate the rights of the alien or of the orphan,…For, remember, you were once slaves in Egypt, and the Lord, your God ransomed you from there; that is why I command you to observe this rule.” (Deuteronomy 24)
Some of our local Catholic leaders who met this afternoon with Cnty. Judge Richard Samaniego and State Rep. Joe Moody to brainstorm ways churches can assist and collaborate with civic leaders in an aggressive response to the corona virus here in our region.
Great ideas and plans!
People who immigrate to our country are statistically less likely to commit a crime. We can welcome, protect and integrate immigrants & keep our country safe!

The Lord himself reminds us: “Whoever loves me will keep my commandments. And this is my commandment: that you love one another.” So, the man who does not love his neighbor does not obey God’s command. But one who does not obey God’s command does not love God.(Maximus, Confessor)
