Hi everybody!!
I'm Ahmad, and I'm beyond ecstatic to finally reveal
#TheTugsProject
to everyone! This project was the culmination of one years worth of talented people's hard work, who I am delighted to give the spotlight to. Meet the art, & the artists!
This week is yielding such extraordinary creativity and findings from the TUGS fans, we love you all! In honor of US Sunshine being released today, here's some amazing shots of Izzy enjoying the outside "sunshine" with his builder, Chris Tulloch!
Gorgeously restored by
@JHRawks
!
This, is... Thunderbirds? Yep!π
To celebrate this fantastic series' 57th anniversary, here's some negatives taken during construction of the TUGS models. These prop replicas were built by Paul Knight in the late 1980s. Thunderbird 4 decided to take a dive in the TUGS tank! (1/2)
Rise n' shine, fellas! π
Work never stops in Bigg City Port! On this fine day, we have some shots from the briefing scene of SUNSHINE, filmed in December '87. You may notice the switcher off to the side, still in his Star livery from JINXED, prior to being painted back to white!
Look at this duuude! πβοΈ
You all wish you were as cool as Hercules, right? Who wouldn't be. One look at him and you can't take your eyes off! This beast is one of the most detailed tugs in the show, built very much to match his real life counterpart in San Francisco. (1/3)
ONE YEAR OF
#TheTUGSProject
!!π
How cool is that! Thank you to each and every one of you for supporting us!
We always encourage people to learn more about tugboats, and the magic that went into making this incredible series. So, here's a thread of books used in the making!
DAMN it feels good to be a gangsta'!
Especially when you're a real rough boss like Zorran! Presented in this series of postings are the majority of faces used on the character (along with a fun joke shot)! There's a lot to explore in these pictures, so enjoy your time! (1/3)
There are only more chapters to this never ending story, but tonight is the sizzle reel, here in it's glory.
Merry Christmas everyone!πβ€οΈ
#TheTUGSProject
Missed us? We missed you like no tomorrow.
No way we were gonna miss Christmas without a drop from
#TheTugsProject
! Enjoy this teaser put together by
@JHRawks
, we'll be seeing you on December 24th!
Be there, if you dare! π₯βοΈ
Merry Christmas, you lovely sailors! πβ€οΈ
It takes a team to keep the tugs in tip-top condition for filming!
Here is Chris Tulloch adjusting the three tug chassis for the final Bigg City scene in "JINXED", circa 1987. Note the smoke pumps hosed into Ten Cents and Sunshine.

Sorry we haven't been posting a bunch lately, Zak's been visibly annoyed by this too!
Arguably the most ambiguous character of the main fleets, you'll see a lot more emotion portrayed by this guy- especially with the eyebrows. You can spot a number of unused faces too! π§
Here's a new kind of post, as today's picture is a promotional still- albeit from a deleted scene!
This is the Coast Guard praising Zebedee to Captain Zero in helping with the arrest of Johnny Cuba in "HIGH WINDS". Previously only one angle from this scene existed in the book.
Monday Monday, another day without a tow into port. Here's Izzy Gomez & his brother "not-Izzy" stuck in DBP's tank.
The faceless tramper is fascinating; it's an experimental design before other ships were built (Johnny Cuba, Nantucket/Old Rusty, Kraka-Toa).
Merry Christmas everyone! πβοΈβοΈ
On this lovely morning, we have some shots featuring Top Hat on the breakaway rescue barge as seen in JINXED! This is the same barge that the "Boomer Brigade" collide into at Lucky's Yard! Here's probably the best shots of it in good lighting.
Feeling fancy? Top Hat sure is! Enjoy some Top Hat shots in this round of tank test photos. Some things to note are the lack of the number and star, and the large amount of side bumpers only seen in earlier episodes.
#TheTugsProject
π±
BOO! π»π
Happy Halloween! I hope everybody is enjoying the Trick or Treat festivities, although I can assure you this is no trick (unless you count the incredible camera tricks that made the Ghost Tugs look more haunting than they actually were in the episode)!
(1/2)
How's everybody enjoying Christmas?βοΈβοΈπ
Here are two tugs I'm sure you've never knew existed- did you know that "Dummy Replica" models were made for the flagship fleet switchers- Ten Cents & Zip? These were commissioned by the studio for promotional purposes. (1/3)
It takes a team to keep Bigg City Port in ship shape! The Coast Guard & his messenger Davy Jones are responsible for monitoring which ships can come into the port. These two guys were built by Jeremy King, and are among some of the smallest vessels in the series!
#TheTugsProject
To end the night, it's with great pleasure that we announce our collaboration with GILES CHRISTOPHER!
Working alongside Terry Permane, Giles took some incredible pictures during his time on several episodes, which we're excited to release through our Project!
Welcome aboard!βοΈ
Missed us?
Well, we're back baby! And "I've just been thinking" now's a great time to drop some Jinxed shots. You can see in these pictures that the crew are still deciding how to position Sunshine, compared to the actual scene in the episode. (1/2)
Hi everyone!
I just want to say, I am so emotionally touched by each & every one of your kind comments.
It makes it feel like every second we put into this was all worth it for the fans. In honor of today's video, enjoy these Boomer pictures, color corrected by

OBEY ORDERS! βοΈπͺ
Well, not from him at least, he's *still* in shock! And who wouldn't be with these absolutely gorgeous shots of Bluenose fresh in his first form, built and painted by Michele Jones! If you look carefully, you can see his black bottom hull, never screen-used!
Here's O.J., fresh out of the workshop!
In these shots he's missing his woven bow fender, stars, number, and Letraset name decals. Built by none other than Simon Parker, O.J. was one of few models to have electronic paddlewheel functionality alongside Billy Shoepack...
Stressed about work? Take it nice and slow and enjoy these behind the scenes pictures from Munitions! Notice that both of these scenes were filmed in the exact same spot in the port, with extra set dressing for the Munitions factory.
#TheTugsProject
Happy December! βοΈβοΈ
Might wanna hang onto your hats for this one- here's everyone's favorite Star stack, WARRIOR! The detail is extraordinary, the model has many details on it that truly define the character. Take note of the chips on the hull's rubrails and messy fender. (1/3)
π₯±
Missed us? We missed you guys! Don't worry- we have some stuff cookin' in the kitchen! We'll be back in action real soon.
In the meantime have this fun picture of the Ten Cents and Zip standees outside the studio.

Taking off!
Well, if the owner of this 1986 Toyota floored it, she may as well have been! Built by aviation enthusiast Peter Boys, here is Sally Seaplane in her final guise. Note the refined windows for eyes and more "realistic" lipstick. ββ
Here's Zip- the 5th member of the Z-Stacks! "A true zero".
History of these pictures: they were shot on the last few spaces on a certain negative roll until the film ran out! These 3 face shots are the only ones of Zip we know of to exist.
Oi! You!π£
You'd better pay attention, because the ever-authoritarian Bluenose is here! Notice the black bottomed hull, which was never featured onscreen in the series.
Here's a fun fact for Friday! Back in the '80s, *everything* you see in TUGS had to be achieved with live, practical effects! πͺβ¨
Here is an example of early dry ice tests, which were eventually practiced in the episode GHOSTS!

Look at all those cables! In these pictures believed to have been taken during Jinxed, we get a much better view of the environment the crew were working in, and a nice look at the 'North West Pacific Lines' Terminal.

Hopefully everybody's staying warm around the "campfire" like Ten Cents and Sunshine here! π₯π₯
Presented are all the Ten Cents faces that were completed in late 1987, along with a single Sunshine happy face!
Toot Toot!
Did you know they also made a large scale "normal" Star Tug whistle, as well as a Zero one?
Restoration on this batch were achieved by

Presenting these rare pictures of Sunshine in his very first white livery, with the dirty weathering not seen in the episode! You may also notice a change in the water- after the first one, it was dyed blue!
Here's some tank tests of all four Shrimpers that appeared in the series! These little guys work independently collecting shrimp around the port, hence the name. π¦π€
Usually, they're seen as a group with Warrior during his antics.
Happy New Year everyone! π₯³From all of us here at the Tugs Project, we hope 2022 is kind to you and that you accomplish all you set out to achieve! To bring in the new year, here are two photos of the outside of T-Stage at Shepperton Studios, where TUGS was filmed.π₯
What do a bunch of Tugs do after fighting a large munitions fire? Lounge around with each other getting cleaned up of course! ππ»
Presented in today's tweets are a selection of characters hanging out in a storage room during production of QUARANTINE in August 1988. (1/2)
T00T T00T !
Alongside the Star & Zero whistles, Ten Cents got a large scale one built of his very own! This would've been used in JINXED and SUNSHINE, albeit never utilized in the final edits.
FUN FACT: The whistle is supposed to be a "Jiminy Cricket"-like figure to Ten Cents.
Here's Hercules, the Ocean-Going Tug!
Notice in these tank tests, he's missing his eyeglasses and the number 6 on his stack.
A bit unusual that he doesn't have a 45 degree angle picture, but I guess it's a good reference view from 1987 of both starboard and port sides!
A small peak behind the curtain at Bigg City Port! Here we can see the crew members hard at work inbetween takes of Jinxed. Both tug fleets better keep an eye out for roaming giants!π

Here's the face shot set of the scheming, yet cowardly, ZUG! This completes the negatives of all five Z-Stacks! The model was built by Paul Knight, and his faces fashioned to resemble the likes of film actor Peter Lorre.
Can you spot which ones were rarely on screen, if at all?
The year is 1987, and a load of new floating friends are under construction at DBP Models! Can you spot a certain tug being built on the rear bench?
It's a tight space with these big models, but the atmosphere was exhilarating!

I want to give a special thanks to Paul Knight and Jeremy King for spawning this Project into existence & providing their materials.
Devious man, devious!
Well, as devious as you can get with a couple of clowns like ZIP and ZUG! You'll notice both of them are missing their flags and side bumpers.
One of these pictures were super challenging as far as restoration goes, we'll make a post about this soon!
DIVE! DIVE!
Here's everybody's favorite submarine, Grampus! These shots show him just beneath the surface, and right at the waterline. He's a tiny little guy, and is a keen ally of the Star Tugs!

A unique look at the dusting process for the project. All pictures in this project required it to some degree, but some were worse than others. Here's one of the moderate ones. Enjoy!
Here's another before/after restoration post, featuring one of our more unique challenge pictures. ποΈ
This was a difficult one, as the negatives were stored badly. Achieved by

As promised, here is the process of the ZUG tank test restoration- unarguably the hardest photo to tackle in this entire project yet.
Tackling this was a collaborative team effort, since it would've been literally impossible to handle alone- our computers would've been killed.
Here's another before and after comparison, with a side-view of Zebedee! This was quite a challenge to take care of, considering we didn't want to affect any details on the model itself.
We're chucking away at new negatives as we speak, keep your eyes open!

Lastly, I want to give my sincere thanks to Paul Knight, the man who made all of this possible.

Well, aside from enjoying the big bang of New Years, Bluenose can't think what's going on right now. And quite frankly, neither can we.
We can't confidently say what happened with this picture, so get creative in the comments!
Happy New Year! π₯³
The two tugboats were built by Paul Knight during his time at DBP Models in 1988. The main difference between these and the screen used ones are a lack of any internal mechanics whatsoever- they're purely static models.
Don't you love the classy "trophy stands" on them? π(2/3)

...and the Fultan Ferry. Due to his width, O.J had functional floating capabilities, however he was clamped and hand-pulled on a chasis like all the other tugs. Playing the "hand of God" in one of these photos is Chris Lloyd, adjusting his hat.

What I believe to be the case, is that two Ghost Tugs were made in 1987 alongside the rest. At some point in 1988, these were sprayed black and used as the "Mysteron" Green Eye tugs in PIRATE. These black tugs were given more modifications, which turned into Burke & Blair! (2/3)
