Why was it an honour? And what was the content of the oration? This was no gallant battle. It was a skirmish lasting seconds by 60 IRA against 6 police, 5 of them Irish. Are their names now to be added to the memorial?

Delighted to have received today a copy of “Marking the Sacrifices and Honouring the Achievements of the Royal Ulster Constabulary GC”. It includes a Nominal Roll of the first 3,500 recruits; many of whom were ex-R.I.C. Kudos to Roy Black, Hugh Forrester & Stephen White.

Somebody got a bargain on eBay today! (Not me). Misdescribed as a horse breastplate badge it is actually a shoulder belt plate or ‘coffin plate’ badge. Both very rare though.

Donaghadee, 2005. My father, an Irish R.C. & son of an RIC Sgt, was billeted (slept) in the Orange Hall here during the war, when in the A.E.C. On Sunday he served Mass, in uniform, in the R.C. Church nearby. He caused confusion to all parties. The Hall was burned down in 2006.

Is this the only marker to a dead RIC man on a village cross in the UK? I've not seen this elsewhere. Leonard Douglas Bradshaw, joined the R.F.A. at 16, commissioned officer at 18, gassed and wounded in France. Killed in the Macroom Ambush 1920 #WW1

Sgt Butler was shot through the spine, his wife lay on top of him trying to shield him from further bullets. The infant daughter of H.C. Storey died 2 days later, he had 8 more children. Butler died 2 months later. Threats were still being made to Storeys family years later.

Seen a lot on Twitter lately about the correct term for 'Ireland' - ROI, Southern Ireland etc. Seemingly Irish are upset at the British use of Éire as a name - but that is the name on stamp they see when they receive Easter cards from the relations. Confusing.

My grandmother was born 138 years ago today. Her mother could recall the Famine years. My father was born in 1916, 107 years ago tomorrow. I learned a lot about what is now called ‘lived experience’ through talking to them. History can be fascinating at a personal level.

Some may not like it but today we had a truly wonderful ceremony of rememberance for the Officers & men of the Royal Irish Constabulary at the Guards Chapel in London. These were the ordinary police almost all Irish men. Many families travelled from all over the world.

Policing the #HolyLand . One or two have brought up the subject of the RIC in Palestine. @swgannon is the expert here but at my count, the 1st batch of recruits to ship out as the #PalestineGendarmerie in 1922 included 556 ex-RIC, 162 ex-ADRIC & 37 ex-Army.

The Regulation Box. You may have one of these in the garage, and not know its origins. Typical of a late 19th/early 20th C pattern box issued to recruits in the RIC, and often continued or reused in the RUC/Garda. Initials and surname would be on the front.

I’d typed out a response arguing SF’s close and continuing links with PIRA/OCG’s; but it would fall on deaf ears. And my mind won’t change re SF. So never sent it. Life’s too short for arguments. Got to be ruthless sometimes.
