Managed to snap a few photos during our staff visit last weekend to Otto’s home library—probably the best private collection of mystery fiction in the world
Horrible flooding in NYC today (including in my apartment), but relieved to report that our basement offices—most importantly our rare book room—have remained dry.
We’re open 11-7 today, stop by if you need to get out of the rain.
Michael Connelly stopped by this afternoon to sign several stacks of RESURRECTION WALK, his newest Lincoln Lawyer novel. Grab your autographed copy here:
“We visit bookshops not so often to buy any one special book, but rather to rediscover, in the happier and more expressive words of others, our own encumbered soul”—Christopher Morley

Happy birthday to us! The bookshop, which opened on
#FridayThe13th
of April, 1979, turns 39 years old today. Help us celebrate by browsing this list of new arrivals -
Happy 80th birthday to store owner Otto Penzler, a man who, over the course of his career, has been friendly with legends like Ellery Queen, John D. MacDonald, Dorothy B. Hughes, Patricia Highsmith, James Crumley, Charles Willeford, P.D. James, Sue Grafton, and many more.
Let it be known that the Mysterious Bookshop staff in no way supports the letter that the Mysterious Bookshop's owner sent to the MWA earlier this week
Need an expert’s help with your mystery book shopping? Store owner Otto Penzler will be on the floor today from 2-3, and then from 3-4 in the rare book room downstairs, which will be open to all shoppers. See you then!
Overcast and in the 40s has got to be one of the three most ideal weather conditions for bookshop browsing, the other two being sunny and 75 or drizzling in the upper 50s. We’ll be here til 7 today for all your mystery book buying needs. 🌥️📚🕵️♂️
Wonderful to meet
@AnthonyHorowitz
in the shop just now. He left behind a pile of assorted signed titles, so stop by soon to get one before they’re gone…
The Mysterious Bookshop opened on this day, April 13th, in 1979. Thanks to our wonderful customers for 40 mysterious years!
[Pictured: the storefront at our original location on West 56th St.]
Fun article on the New York Times today about store owner Otto Penzler's house in Connecticut, which once housed his (now sold) collection of 60,000 mystery first editions
Next Tuesday (4/13), we will have been in business 42 years! Just wanted to let you all know ahead of time so you’ll be ready to celebrate with us then 🍾🍾🍾
Wonderfully clean and clear air inside the bookshop today, utterly breathable with 100% visibility. Does not make your eyes burn or your throat sore. I’m already looking forward to taking another breath in here. Highly recommended!
Doing some end of year stuff and just came across this picture of jazz legend
@RonCarterBass
at the shop last spring for our event with
@Connellybooks
. That’s definitely a photo for the bookshop archive…
Once you’ve voted, make your way down to Warren Street and pick up a mystery novel or two—there’s no better way to distract yourself from the news for the next few days. We’re here til 7
How many authors would make a special trip to NYC just to support a bookshop? I can think of one. Thanks,
@Connellybooks
! Signed copies of DARK SACRED NIGHT here:
OK, this is a first for us: Never have we ever had a signing line that went out the door, let alone one that stretched down the block. Thanks to everyone who came out for
@riley_sager
last night! And thanks for
@jonNothin
for documenting this moment…
Elmore Leonard was born on this day in 1925, so here’s a photo of him, Walter Mosley, and store owner Otto Penzler in the shop sometime in the early 2010s
Reminder that we’re still closed through the end of the week while they shoot a TV show in the store. Check out the new sign they made (since somehow they thought our zip-tied, peeling and rotted sign wasn’t screen-ready)
It's tough out here for an independent bookseller and publisher of mystery fiction, so as of today, we're expanding the business. Welcome to The Mysterious Bookshop & Grocery!
Early morning visit from Michael Imperioli and
@StevenSchirripa
, who signed their new book, WOKE UP THIS MORNING: The Definitive Oral History of The Sopranos. Get one before they’re gone:
Here’s Otto Penzler from a March 1997 feature in Esquire Japan, pictured in his office at our former location on W 56th St. (described by him as the most beautiful office in New York)
Nice catching up with
@andrewklavan
yesterday who signed some early copies of THE HOUSE OF LOVE AND DEATH, his newest Cameron Winter mystery, before its release at the end of the month.
Please join us 11/6, 6 PM for a launch event with Klavan! Details:
We are loving the new
@FXNetworks
show, A Murder at the End of the World, and not just because a bit of it was filmed at The Mysterious Bookshop.
Who else is watching?
Here are all the books we published this year at

@ScarletSuspense
, and
@PenzlerClassics

Happy Friday, mystery Twitter! What’s everyone reading this weekend?
I’m about halfway through Liz Moore’s newest, THE GOD OF THE WOODS, and savoring it…
Extra! Extra! There's a new Sherlock Holmes book from Nicholas Meyer coming at the end of August, and he'll be here at the shop 9/9 to help launch it...
Recently discovered these programs for the Mohonk Mountain House & Murder Ink weekends, a mystery fan getaway hosted by Edward Gorey, Isaac Asimov,
@StephenKing
, and others — Anyone have a time machine I can borrow??
“The man browsed in a high-toned way, but when he got around to shoplifting, he chose sleaze.”
Simply cannot get over this article from a 1985 New York Times issue, where a Mysterious Bookshop employee criticizes a robber’s taste in books...
Only thing better than being outside on a day as gorgeous as today is being inside a mystery-specialty bookshop (with the front door propped open, of course). Come see us!
