The one reason I have published two books and some number of articles in the last twenty years: I had a university job that provided a decent salary, job security, and a light enough teaching load for me to write and do research. Period, end of story.

Let’s be honest, in my field (English) UIC is ABSOLUTELY the best department in Chicago, which has a couple of other departments. Plus there’s a strong faculty union, which has good effects on how PhD students are treated.

If you are applying to PhD programs, don’t sleep on the urban R1s like UIC (my alma mater) or GSU (where I work). The faculty are about as good as you’ll find anywhere else, and you get to be in a big fun diverse city, which can be great for your mental health.
